[ - ] I feel so sad. I've been through a lot in the past two years (had a baby after losing one, ended up hospitalized during pregnancy, learned that dh had cancer after I had the baby, dh cheated on me, we split and a close friend passed away) and I hold it all together, but deep in my heart, I'm sad. The friends I have just don't understand where I am at right now. I have to keep going, keep a schedule, take care of myself and baby because it is necesary and it helps keep the emotional pain at bay. I am exhausted however and I feel like the friends I have are not supportive, and haven't ever put me first-ever. I hear about their problems all the time, they ask me for help in their lives regularly and at the end of the day, I have no one that I can talk to openly. I'm really down about this. Should I just cut them off and start to look for new friends as time goes by? Or give it time? Is this my pain talking? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Go cold on the those that leech off you. Find a sympathetic ear - it could be a par not, a support group, a therapist or a playground friend. You have so much going on and being a new mother is always stressful even without this DH-friend stuff. I'm sorry you're overwhelmed but remember you'll be so much happier once your baby's a bit older and you get some down time for yourself. And don't forget to ex raise even if it's kickboxing at home in front of a very amused baby ; those endorphins are magical. GL, my friend. [ Reply | More ]

You have been through so much! Take some time to just breathe and enjoy your baby. I totally understand it is EXHAUSTING. My child did not sleep for the first 10 months - NOT ONE NIGHT! I think you should do some new things where you may meet some new people - absolutely. I can tell you I recently took on a volunteer opportunity and I am meeting fabulous women. Just curious -- do you think your ex cheated because he was freaking out over a cancer diagnosis or was this par for the course with him? [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry. That's a lot. You're doing a good job keeping it together and keeping your crazy from showing. Don't toss your friends just yet. Just hang back, lay low (say you're swamped with the baby, etc) until you have recharged a bit. As someone who is similar to your situation and outlook, I think there are some people who feel and hang on to experiences more than others. some peeps can shake thungs off and work through stuff faster. Others completely lose it and turn to booze/pills to help deal with it. Others are a bit more melancholy about things and heal slower, need more time process. You'll get out of this funk and this cloud will pass. Hang in there and GL. [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry that you are sad and that you are having a rough few years. I have wonderful friends who would be there for me in a heartbeat. However, every single one of them has problems (usually multiple) of their own. Sick parent, wayward sibling, health issues, special needs child, jerky/cheating/alcoholic parents, financial issues...I am there to listen and help them periodically, however I have many problems as well. There is no way we could each bear the weight of all of our collective problems. I would rather use them as my release. People who I can go out with and have a great time and a good chat and we all pretend we have no problems for the night. A safe space without all of the emotional weight. Should my personal issues become too much, I will talk to a qualified therapist [ Reply | More ]

My dd has a pretty substantial social media following (both Twitter and Instagram) and is required to keep it up-to-date throughout the day. don't go into a plastic surgeon without a specific thing to target, even if it's vague like "aging." If you let a surgeon go ham on your face you'll pay a lot of money to look ridiculous [ Reply | More ]

Sure. A plastic surgeon told me once that people run into trouble for wanting to look much younger than their years, or to have specific features changed in ways that don't suit their faces. Avoid this, and you'll be good. [ Reply | More ]

There are different types of students at Stuy. Those who sleep in class and get by, those who graduate with 98 averages and everything in between. Where would your dc fall? [ Reply | More ]

I'm not sure what it is that you are trying to communicate to op. I was trying to help op gauge the HW load at Stuy. It really does depend on the student. And some are able to sleep while others stay up 1/2 the night [ Reply | More ]

OP: I don't know where my dc would fall at Stuy. Has a 99 average at a citywide ms, but I'm sure Stuy is tougher, I'm hoping it's not too hard for dc. I've heard (from a couple of good students) that some kids fall asleep in class because they're so exhausted from sleep deprivation. [ Reply | More ]

Ok. Your d. Should be fine at Stuy. But there is usually a solid three hours of HW. You have to factor in sports, if your dc will use free period to work, if your dc will load schedule and/or load up on APs. You are probably better off contacting families a grade higher than yours from same citywide who attend Stuy -- they would give you a good comparison [ Reply | More ]

I agree. If you are at an accelerated citywide , your DC will be fine. All HS have a lot of homework. DD's friends who are there say it is the same as Bronx science. [ Reply | More ]

We've decided against Stuy for our double-four, straight-A dc. It's an amazing school that offers tons of opportunities, a great reputation and an impressive peer group but it nevertheless has its shortcomings. I know some dcs who love it but I know many who don't and it seems to have changed over the years. The cheating, the grade-grubbing, the focus on AP classes above all else--it all raises red flags in my mind. Not worth the risk imo. [ Reply | More ]

So, are the kids who are staying up until 1-2 am doing lots of activities/sports? Or procrastinating? 3 hours of homework doesn't seem too terrible. [ Reply | More ]

Well - sports and ECs are (and should be) part of high school life. And no teen should stay up until 2AM. It's borderline abuse. Sleep is important [ Reply | More ]

Of course sports and ECs are important. My impression was that some kids get in over their heads with too many. 3 hours of hw sounds like what you get at a lot of strong schools. [ Reply | More ]
