[ - ] I have a DS, nearly age 8, who is very trying. We took him for a psych eval 2 years ago, very extensive multi-month full family, and psych said nothing wrong but immaturity. In the past couple of months DS's behavior had started to be great, but after a huge stumble we decided to check in with the psych. After just a few mins 1:1 with DS, psych said "feels like" ADHD and thinks medication is a gift. From my reading, it seems like every kid who doesn't behave and is bright is dumped into an ADHD bucket. Do I deny medication and the "gift" of focus and brains? Do I risk him shooting up a school in 10 years if I medicate? Who's been there? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

OP: It was so bizarre to me after the thoroughness of 2 years ago, and now it's, "oh, ADHD." Really? 1/4 of the kid's life has gone by. My kid is TOUGH - but I don't know that I want to throw meds that blast through a developing brain's chemistry. I worry that when he's 18 I'll worry I either wrecked his life from not medicating (social issues, school behavior), or have an Adam Lanza, and feel like I'll choose wrong whatever I do. You are in my head. I am in almost exactly the same situation. We are in the process of doing the whole evaluation thing, too. And you're right, the same thing, the behavior (specifically, not sitting still and listening quietly) becomes "ADHD". And I'm so frustrated with the reports back from school that I'm almost ready to bite the bullet and go with medication. But then today on my ride home I heard something on the radio that was almost like it was meant for me to hear - a story about yet another famous, well known person who was EXACTLY like this in school. Our society is littered with people who tell stories about being a bad student because they couldn't have given a shit about whatever the teacher was talking about because they had something in them that just wouldn't let them sit there and be talked to. And many times those folks become successful because they have that personality where they know what they want, and it's incredibly difficult for them to sit in their cube and do what they're told for 40 years. I literally walked in the house and told my 8 year old - "don't be mean to other people, don't be aggressive, don't cause other people trouble, but if you need to get your 'name on the blackboard' every day because you didn't turn to the right page in your textbook, then that's fine with me." OP: DS is extremely bright, but has impulse control problems - what used to be immaturity. I even cop to screaming at him today because he pushed my last button. I get why school is frustrated. I wish the evidence were overwhelming that meds *would* help (seems like it's a push after a few years, or a potential disaster, with a few good cases) - I'd like all our lives to be smoother. I just don't feel like meds are being a good steward of my son, but... ugh, it's been a day. [ Reply | More ]

We ended up not having to medicate, but our very wise pediatric neuro told us that if it starts to affect DC self esteem, than to use meds. Self esteem is much harder to fix and can spiral into depression, etc. Maybe now that your DC is at the right age to finally diagnose, it's why the eval is coming in so quickly? I followed my gut and had my DC evaluated by an audiologist and it turned out to be a hearing issue (not physical, but not much to do about it). Good luck, I know it's hard and everytime someone loses temper or kid gets in trouble, it can make them feel badly about themselves. [ Reply | More ]

He is an exceptional candidate and would really like to leave his current company. Was expecting a better offer, he countered with a higher base vs. commission split and requested a signing bonus (which he'll most likely get, probably $10-20K). He also asked for time to think about it and will probably pusher for an even better deal when he comes back to them. We are surprised that the first offer was only matching his current salary. Is that typical these days? It's not typical ime but maybe he's at the top of his payscale. There's always the old "I got another offer for x, can you match it?". If he doesn't want to risk it he can negotiate for more vacation time/commuting costs or other benefits. [ Reply | More ]

OP: He's getting close to top of scale, yes. He'll max out with the bonus, which he'll most likely get as company did not balk when he brought it up. I'm thinking they expected him to counter. I'll suggest he use the 'other offer' tactic. He is ridiculously honest and feels uncomfortable saying things like that when not 100% true. Neither of us still sleeps with our spouse but each of our spouses are very much invested in the marriage and would be devastated if they found out. We have talked about leaving our spouses for one another, but we weren't there yet. The (biggest) issue is that I'm supportive of other women who chose to terminate their pregnancies, but I am completely pro-life for myself. So now I am in a position where I have to choose between devastating others (including children) or (selfishly, due to my point of view) taking what I see to be a life of a baby/future baby. Other than the fact that I'm the worst person in the world (to be honest, I don't feel horrible about the affair; but I now realize how unbelievably irresponsible I am), what do I do? My affair partner is also torn. He is not really in favor of an abortion either but we both feel stuck. We are also very much in love. That's the problem - we were talking about leaving our marriages for each other. But we weren't there yet. MY DEAR GOD it pisses me off to no end how women like this accidentally get accidentally knocked up, but DH and I have been trying and trying and trying for over a year and nothing. The ways of the world, beyond frustrating. /rant [ Reply | More ]

Abortion is wrong and you will regret it forever. Your marriage is over anyway...end it. Your kids will adjust and they will have a new sib to love. [ Reply | More ]

Keep the baby. Anyone I know who has aborted has horrible guilt. Don't rob your children of their sibling. Clearly your marriage is dead [ Reply | More ]

I know several people who have had abortions and none of them regret it. How about robbing your children of being raised in a home with a mother and father with their knowledge that their Mother is a lying, cheating whore and resenting their half-sibling as a symbol of those facts. [ Reply | More ]

Where you ever as "in love" with dh as you are with baby daddy? If so, I wouldn't be so convinced that relationship will play out. Either way, you need to come clean to your DH and you guys decide what to do about your relationship. You clearly want the baby either way so now you need to figure out the arrangement.
