[ - ] Why does Al Jazeera have to be headquartered in San Francisco? I think Gavin Newsom had something to do with it and now they are making anti American propaganda films. Decrying the basic bitch's love of bland, boring products like Ugg boots and Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes is a rhetorical technique that allows the singer to appear cooler by comparison.[9] Rapper Kreayshawn describes a basic bitch as: "A basic bitch is just someone who likes what’s typical to like. [ - ] Philosophical question - is it fair to say that I have "been to China" when my only visit was to a far western Muslim-dominated border city? While I was in Kyrgyzstan, I got a visa from the Chinese embassy to cross the border and visit Kashgar, so I did that with a couple friends for a few days. Then we took the bus back to Osh. When most people think of "China," they think - for lack of a better term - of the "ching-chong" parts of the country; not the western Turkic desert region. So have I been inside of the PRC's territorial boundaries? Yeah, sure. But have I been to "China" as that term is usually understood? Well, not really... it's a little bit like someone spending a few days in Puerto Rico then saying she has been to "the US." 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

No it's not. It's more like visiting East New York or Cypress Hills and saying you've been to America. [ Reply | More ]

It's a bigger difference. A lot of the locals speak little if any Chinese, and instead speak local languages like Uyghur, which is a distant branch of modern Turkish rather than any sort of East Asian tongue. [ Reply | More ]

Short answer-Yes, you have been to China. Better answer - I have been to Kashgar in western China. I think this is a much more interesting answer too. I have "only been to HK". [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I drove almost 10 hours to see an old friend a few months back. We went from chatting weekly to absolutely nothing after the visit. Stayed with him, my DH and DC came along. Can think of absolutely nothing we did or said wrong. Am feeling really angry, like he's pouting or playing games. We are older, btw, in our 50s. Way too old for games like this. It's mind-boggling to me that he would go stone cold like that. I replay the visit and both DH and I feel like we were not really wanted which really pisses me off. Wishing now he'd just said 'don't come' instead of putting on a front for 3 days. People are so fucked up these days. 39 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

No. He did used to have a thing for me but we are supposedly way over that. I'm married, he has someone in his life. It's just bizarre and it's not like he put us up in fabulous circumstances. He is poor and lives with his brother. We made the trip so I could reconnect with him more than just online. I ended up feeling really embarrassed afterwards, like he never really wanted us to come. Can't decide whether to say something or just delete his contact/messaging info. [ Reply | More ]

No. Guest bedroom (they have huge condo). He invited us multiple times to stay with them, even when I was saying we should stay in a hotel. I don't think he really wanted us to though. What's really odd is he's not the type of person to play games like that. Normally he'd say what he really thinks. It's baffling to me. [ Reply | More ]

Ugh. If he is OK with home wrecking, as that indicates, he probably did still have hope of a romantic situation developing with you. And your visit either (a) made him realize you are happy with DH and it's not going to happen or (b) made him realize the chemistry/attraction he felt in the past is gone. [ Reply | More ]

Let me explain something about human nature. Most humans get jealous. It is hard for most humans to be genuinely close with someone who is more successful then them. jealousy rears its ugly head. It doesn't matter how nice the OP was, this former friend felt jealous and is doing the slow fade [ Reply | More ]

Dear OP, what you may not understand is that your sympathy for him may have been interpreted by him as PITY. When people suspect that others pity them, it makes them very angry and resentful. So no matter how much you pity a person do not let on that you pity them. Just pretend to envy and respect them even when you do not! [ Reply | More ]

I have gotten very lucky. DH and I have made serious wealth. But I have hidden it from all my friends for just this reason. most of my friends would drop me if they knew how much money we had. Similarly, my husband is genuinely nice but I tell my friends that he is sometimes nasty to me, again to prevent my friends from being jealous. so far it has worked [ Reply | More ]

I think she is clued into human nature. People can't help themselves - they're petty. I'm poor. Sometimes I have to consciously tell myself like a mantra that someone else's good fortune doesn't diminish the potential for mine so that I can feel happy for them. I wish feeling glad for my friends was automatic and authentic like the love I feel for my children. Alas, it is not. If I 'liked' the FB vacay photos, it took some inner work for me to do so. Or if I was one of two who wasn't invited to an event that friends are raving about, I had to give myself a talk to rise above it. [ Reply | More ]
