[ - ] What do you do with a kid who hates every activity they try? My 8 yo dd has tried soccer, ballet, softball, swimming, sewing, ice skating, piano, guitar, singing lessons.....you name it, and without fail after a few lessons she says she hates it and refuses to go back. It doesn't matter whether it was an activity that she chose herself or one that we picked for her, or whether she knows other kids in the class. Either way, she hates everything. I am at the end of my rope. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Stop trying. Let her just play and be a kid. There's no absolute necessity at this age that she have a passion or committed pursuit. When she's in 7th or 8th grade try again. [ Reply | More ]

OP: every other kid she knows is in tons of extracurricular activities, so she will be alone after school if we don't schedule anything. Also, I worry about her being left behind if in a few years she decides she wants to play soccer again, for example - all the other kids will have been playing for so much longer that it may be hard to rejoin. I wish there were a way to instill a more positive attitude in her about trying these things, but it sounds like most of you think I should just let her be. [ Reply | More ]

She's playing you. Give it a rest, and try something new in the fall. Or wait for her to speak up about something she wants to do. Or, if you feel strongly, tell her that she is required to take whatever the activity is until the end of the term you've signed up for. Period. [ Reply | More ]

ITDA. Women need to change their perspective. It's 2015. We have (mostly) legal, professional, and social equality. No, it's not perfect equality yet, but for the most part, women can do everything men can do and can be professionally and financially successful. Which means women can be more successful than their husbands, and some women should expect to be. For over 100,000 years, men have been fine with partnering with women who had less financial and professional potential. Women just need to get comfortable with the same mindset. [ Reply | More ]

Successful woman here. Listen. When a successful guy marries a kindergarten teacher, it works out fine. When a successful WOMAN marries a kindergarten teacher or the like, it doesn't work out. The guy becomes resentful and feels emasculated. Women know this. Successful women will have a better relationship with a more equal partner. The end. [ Reply | More ]

I agree, but it's not only that. Successful women tend to go for ambitious men like themselves. Not all, but most. Resentment builds on the woman's part if her mate does not share a similar level of ambition. This reminds me of a former boss I had. She was a kick-ass go getter with an impeccable pedigree. She was going places in the business world. She married some guy that I considered to be a total slacker dude. I remember thinking to myself at the time, "WTF?!!" Needless to say, that marriage did not last long. She went on to become the president of an international division of a MAJOR corporation and found someone similar. By all accounts, she is really happy now. [ Reply | More ]

I was single in NYC in my 20s but that was a long time ago. If anything, I think it is MUCH easier to meet people than it was in my single days before online dating existed. There are pros and cons to online dating: on the plus side, you have access to a whole world of people that you would never come in contact with but on the negative side, people can be much more choosy. When I lived in NYC in my 20s, I was what you would call attractive and successful (TT MBA, big $ job, etc.). I managed to find suitable men through my professional circles. Quality, not quantity. I'm 24. I'm "more than employed" too. I am, by your definition, a catch. I'm not really interested in dating, yet my mom worries like you do. I have far more important things to accomplish before I worry about a man. There isn't an abundance of men that I would date right now, either. It's tough to be dating in your mid 20s. I would be interested in "the relationship" that is going somewhere... find me a 25yo man who wants that. I'd rather wait a while, get my own life going, and wait til the men my age catch up and want to settle down. [ Reply | More ]

I want an apartment, or at the very least I want to go into my long term relationship with half of the down payment on a place. I want to be an equal. I had lots of silly relationships in college and I'm glad I did, they were short lived and I got burned a little. It made me more sure of what I want in the future. I've been single since I was 21. My longest relationship was 6 months. Never serious. The whole process is exhausting, I don't want to mess around and I'm so happy to wait for the right man. I'd rather focus my energy on my career, because even if you're High flying at 25, if you don't pull those 60,70,80 hour weeks early on, you won't be working at 40 hr week when you've got children. (At least this is my plan). OP should encourage her dd to travel and live, men will come. I went to Africa alone, this year I'm going to Edinburgh fringe festival in August, alone, because I think it'll be so awesome to geek out at so many amazing shows. [ Reply | More ]

np- I am pregnant and I continue to work out, and my doctor said that it's healthy and an overall good thing for my pregnancy to keep working out. But- I'm not sure what your friend is doing- my working out consists of some light/moderate elliptical work, yoga stretches, uphill walking, and some light arm weights (2 or 3lb weights- with the type of reps/moves you'd do in barre class or something). [ - ] I know people hate diblasio, but are things really worse? What has he done that's worse? Do we really have more crime? (Apart from the ferguson/garner aftermath, that's a special scenario, and I am not sure it would have gone better with Llota). Isn't upk a great thing? What has gotten worse? For what it's worth, I voted for Llota. 35 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Lots of people don't hate di blasio at all. The schools are improved, more affordable housing is in the works, something's being done about traffic deaths, and in general there seems to be more awareness of the 99%. It's not perfect, but I'm much happier with him than with Bloomberg. [ Reply | More ]

Something done about traffic deaths? Like what? Lowering the speed limit will not change reckless drivers into careful law abiding drivers. It increases sped cameras and City revenues. Redesigning traffic patterns takes time and $. [ Reply | More ]

Heroin supply has sky-rocket thanks to US ending the Taliban rule in Afghanistan. the Taliban was the only one able to limit poppy production over there. It was well known that the consequence would be more heroic addicts and death in US and UK, key heroin markets. A negative externality of Foreign Policy if you want. [ Reply | More ]

I think that Deblasio just instinctively wants to hurt the middle class and help the deviants and vagrants . Remember that he sought out lesbians to date, and not just lesbians but the angriest and most bitter lesbians. Ultimately he married a lesbian [ Reply | More ]

For UPK to have any impact, it needs to be followed by an sound education in K to 12, otherwise it is babysitting. Less than a 1/3 of the NYC graduates are college ready. More needs to be done in elementary/middle and high school. [ Reply | More ]

He is great announcing plans that are 10 to 15 years out. With the exception of UPK which is funded by the State in seats that already existed or have been subcontracted out, he is lacking in executing any meaningful means to address income inequality. Paid sick leave will not have a significant long term impact on lifting families out of poverty. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone here from the Baltimore/DC area familiar with a really good divorce attorney? Getting ready to go head to head with a very vindictive, spiteful husband who will do anything to take me down. Including hurting our DS. I'm a SAHM (joint decision made by us both at the time) so I really need someone who knows how to help me. I'm not looking for lifetime alimony, just support for my DS and help to get back into the workforce at a level that can support my DS and me. TIA. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Thank you. He had said he wanted 50/50 but I know him and I know the only reason was because his amount of child support would be reduced. no one in my family is divorced so I'm really lost. Do I want sole legal and physical custody. He can see him anytime he wants but essentially I have raised him (emotionally, physically) and I want that to continue. I'm not sure of the difference in the terms legal vs physical. [ Reply | More ]

Set up hidden cameras and tapes. But keep in mind, Maryland is a two party state re permission to tape record. (Remember Linda Tripp and Monica?) Look for lifetime alimiony, 50% of everything including pensions, college for DS, etc. You can get a court order to get him to leave. Do it. Keep in mind that very few lawyers act in your best interest, they act to make money for themselves. [ Reply | More ]
