[ - ] I am so sad and this may sound silly but It still makes me sad. My daughter and her friends all use Instagram and it is customary on their birthdays to post pictures and write long winded messages about how much they love them and all the little jokes they have together etc. My daughter does this for all of her friends birthdays and not one person posted anything like this for her. People wrote happy birthday but there were none of these special messages. She didn't say anything about it but I know she's upset. Thoughts? She's 11 fwiw. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I did of course - I try to make birthdays special always but it's sad when children don't think you're kid is as great as you do :(. She really is pretty wonderful and I'm just sad about it. Seems like the wrong kids get all the accolades sometimes... [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I responded below, but it got me thinking...I have triplets. One boy has a "language processing deficit," which when I was young was called a learning disability. Anyway, I was advised by triplet mom's not to hold him back because people (kids & parents) will be rude and ask me and him if he's the "stupid" one and other such nasty comments. His tutor doesn't think that will happen and is encouraging me to give him an extra year before K (other triplets are reading and definitely ready for K). What do you think? 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I wouldn't use reading at 4 as your barometer at how far your child is behind. My dc is in K at citywide and only about half the kids started K reading. You have a tutor for your son or is he seeing a speech therapist? Many kids get services at school for various delays, deficits but are able to stay in their grade. [ Reply | More ]

I brought you reading, because the other 2 are clearly ready for K. My son with the deficit has a speech therapist, a tutor and goes to a special school. He will be getting an IEP at school this fall, but the tutor still thinks he should get another year to develop before K. [ Reply | More ]

+1, including me. But your situation is more difficult with triplets. I would say it's all in the presentation, if you don't make it a big deal, they won't either - at least hopefully. I'll tell you my story - my son was a late birthday and I wanted to hold back and dh was not for it at all. Son is now freshman in college flunking out. Even dh regrets pushing him into k now. Pour on ther therapy as much as possible. Make sure your child is ready for school. How does the processing deficit manifest? Language is the basis of so much learning, especially social learning, which is so critical in high school. Make decisions unique to each child as each child is his/her own person. I have a child with language issues and it has been a struggle for many yrs. My kids are 18 mos apart and they have been in differnt schools since the start. We chose what was right for each child. Don't make your decisions based upon what others will think. Get a private evaluation from a Developmental Pediatrician and a REALLY good speech and language pathologist. This is something worth stretching for financially, will give you a broad perspective and strategy for therapeutic options. Will also give you ammunition with board of ed, if necessary [ Reply | More ]

What is your gut telling you - hold vs not hold ? Do you think he can make progress by Sept and keep up if he continues with therapist ? I would decide on that first. Then decide how to make it so that everybody is happy. If you decide to hold him back (which from what you are saying sounds like a better option), I would consider different school. You are right to think that kids will ask questions and/or make fun of him (it's not right, but kids can be mean). GL ! [ Reply | More ]

Why in hell would you "usually decline" unless you don't plan on giving one for yourself? As long as the DC wants to go, you go. np--You can't really compare class size between public and private because private schools don't keep children in one classroom, At private school, kids are in groups of one half the class size for many special classes during the day. Reading and often math groups are in small groups of four or five children, each with a dedicated teacher. Most private schools have gym four and five times weekly, in addition to daily recesses. The downside of a small class size is that it limits your dd's social choices. Small classes are much more likely to have a social clique. If your dd is not in that clique (by choice or not by choice), then it can be very lonely. BTDT. Even if your dd is in the clique, as she gets older, the class dynamics become very stale as there are few options to make new friends. BTDT as have many of my friends and colleagues. NP - child needs smaller classes with more attention to learn. Parents want more contact with teachers b/c of this issue. As child learns to write I think this is a big issue. In public viritually no comments on written work. In private, multiple iterations of written work baack and forth with teacher with comments. Teacher can't provide that level of feedback with twice as many students. [ Reply | More ]
