Usually applicants hide the fact that they were given special treatment on standardized tests. If you mean accomplishing great things despite a disability, this can be very useful in your personal statement. If on the other hand you sound like a professional ADA litigant, you want to hide this fact until it's too late. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What does UB make of this? So I'm applying to Stanford for a graduate program. They sent out an email saying they would have decisions released by March 1st. There is a program specific test we need to take prior to entry for the program that they said in the email they "strongly recommend" we take when it's offered March 7th. It's also offered in May though. The graduate program starts in June. Stanford said they "strongly recommend" the March tests over the May test because results may not be processed in time for the June start date of the program. But when I went to the website of this test, it clearly says the results will be posted two weeks later. I think the reason Stanford wants us to take the March test rather than the May test is because they think some people might not pass the March test then this way we still have the May test in the case we fail the March test. Anyway it bothers me that they don't just come out and say the real reason (ie You may not pass the first time, so allow room for a second time.) instead of feeding us a lie that the results "may not be ready in time." It's like they think we're smart/arrogant enough that we think we can pass the test the first time, but too stupid to see through this line of bull. Makes me mad because sorry Stanford, no I'm not going to shell out $300 on a test and spend all month studying for it only to end up being denied from Stanford anyway. I'll sign up for and start studying for the May test after/if I get accepted To Stanford in March. (Test registration deadline for March is in February before acceptances are sent out.) Basically I'm disappointed Stanford would lie like this and manipulate the applicant pool. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

op: Yes, I'm stressed. I didn't realize the test was so expensive. I need to register now for the March test and spend all month studying if I'm going to take it March like they are asking me to do. But why do that if I'm not even going to be accepted? I knew it sounded like bullshit as soon. I read the part about how they "strongly recommended" but didn't require the March test. It seems fishy to me, so I looked up the test website and found that they give results two weeks later. Then I knew Stanford lied. Sure institutions lie all the time, but when this lie is costing their applicants a pretty penny, ya I think that's pretty messed up [ Reply | More ]

op: Also, this is a test that only Stanford requires. None of my other schools ask for this test. It's not the GRE or anything. I just think it's pretty messed up that they would lie like that about the reasons. It's insulting to us applicants that they think we can't figure that out, and it's insulting that they assume we're arrogant to be reasoned with so they have to pretend like our results won't be in yet when they will be [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Dh's younger sister wants to come stay with us and look for a job/place to live in the city. I dread it. I have 13DS and 10DD. I suggested as a compromise, she could stay for no more than 4 weeks in July, when DS is at camp, and stay in his room (I do not want the kids sharing a room or SIL sleeping in living room), AND she understand house rules (no late nights, clean up after herself). He said, well why cant she stay also for the 3 weeks after that (we rent a place out East). I said, because she will make a mess of the apt and I do not want it. Any thoughts? 32 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Today is my 40th birthday. I have been dreading this day since the day after I turned 39. For the past year I have been on a mission to look and feel the best at 40. I spent eleven months running, jumping, spinning, hanging upside down, kickboxing, practicing yoga, trying Pilates and Bari. I had a boob job (I did. not big. just better), I went for facials every 6 weeks, I obsessed over lash and hair extensions. I tried 20 diets, 10 cleanses and I fully lost my shit. Jan 5th I pulled out all of my hair extensions and called my therapist. I explained I was turning 40 in just a few weeks and I have been a wreck. A full train wreck. Partly because I feel like half my life is over and partly because I can never erase the lines on my forehead even with Botox. Where did they come from? How was it that yesterday I was graduating, getting married, having kids and now I am turning 40. AHHHHH. [ Reply | More ]
