[ - ] Genuinely asking this...I used to live in NYC but moved to MA when oldest DC was about 2, so we have only done preK/elementary here. Do you really think that all of the stress/expense of getting dcs into the best public/or private schools in NYC is worth it? I went to public in MA, in a less than great school district, but still got into a decent undergrad program and then a good business school, and am doing OK. DCs are going to our good public elementary school, but every once in a while I wonder if I am taking things too casually. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Would a better school have stretched you more, got you better grades, more APs, etc? Would you have gotten a better job from a better (not just decent) undergrad program (e.g., McKinsey vs. Deloitte). Could that have gotten you into a top (not just good) business school? Could you be doing "great" now with any of those slight advantages? If you don't care about the answer, or if you're not very ambitious, then don't worry about it. If you do care, or if you want more for your DC, then don't take these things casually. Might not change the outcome - but (to me, at least) - there should be nothing casual about this stuff. Not true. All of the specialized ETFs have higher fees. The real difference is that ETFs you can buy in the open market in the middle of the day; index funds you get the day-ending price, which might not matter to a casual investor. [ Reply | More ]

Many differences. You are confusing a wrapper/legal vehicle (i.e. ETF and Mutual Fund) with investments/assets (i.e. the contents of an ETF or a Mutual Fund). You can have the same investment, e.g., a S&P500 index fund, in either wrapper. [ Reply | More ]

correct. there are ETFs that copy index funds and also ETFs that stretch into specialized indexes. The term "index funds" is understood to mean mutual funds that track broad indexes like the S&P 500 or Dow Jones. [ Reply | More ]
