The amount of time it would have taken me to write up all relevant notes and have the amount of phone calls I would need to have with my replacement would probably be double that of just doing the work myself. I'm an independent freelancer, so I don't have a support staff that's intimately involved in my work projects. It's just the nature of my work. It was fine. My parents were in town for a full month and I had a night nurse the first 2 weeks. I had way more help than most. [ Reply | More ]

The information itself doesn't violate the beliefs. Abortions violate their beliefs. Unfortunately here, you have two sets of rights, the right to free speech (argued by the clinics) and the right to obtain an abortion (if that is what you choose to do). That said, the only time that I think this would be a real issue is where the clinic is the only game in town and the information on choice is limited. The rights have to be balanced somehow. That depends on how they advertise their own organizations. If it is clear that they advertise themselves as only assisting with prenatal care, post natal care, and/or adoption and not abortion, I would not require them to provide advice on abortion. If they are one of those fake pregnancy crisis centers with no real mission but to lure pregnant women away from the abortion clinics they were looking for in the first place, I do not think it is wrong for them to be forced to share such information. When Trump loses, he is going to sell all the hotels and restaurants and start a Network for racists and bigots with Ailes, Stone and Breitbart. The hotels all have value and will hold their value during sale despite Trump’s name. If he doesn’t sell the properties, he is going to go bankrupt because he has ruined the brand by running for President and showing how much of a despicable asshole he really is. The hotels and restaurants are dependent on the general public and a sizeable chunk of that target audience would rather eat sawdust and sleep in the gutter than give Trump one penny of their money. The golf courses which aren’t part of a resort/hotel complex will probably be taken private where he doesn’t have to depend on the general public, but rather just a handful of rich white guys who like and think like Trump anyway. We weren't all just magically perfect. They disciplined us. I know one family where the daughter speaks disrespectfully to her parents. And from my viewpoint, it's because the parents allow it. I had an aunt and cousin who did this, and it never made sense to me. My aunt was an RN who retired early to care for a grandson so her daughter could get started teaching school. It was a net financial loss, since my aunt was being paid much more than my cousin, plus the baby didn't have the benefit of being cared for by his mother. I guess if the grandmother is paid less than the mother it could make sense though. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's very tough to provide FT care to a baby/toddler unless you are extremely energetic and have a good network, so that you are not cooped up with a baby all day. That said, my mom does all the school days off, sick days, often does pick up, etc. and it is wonderful. A lot of it depends on the dynamic between you and dd. There is a real "information overload" with parenting right now, for better or worse. You will have to be able to communicate directly, respect boundaries, and dd will require some flexibility to let you do some things "your way" E.g. my mom's habit was to bathe dbs every night. My sister and I each had dcs with eczema. Doc said to only bathe once a week. My mom would still bathe my db every other night or so, because it was so soothing, and then just put on lotion. I was OK with it, because she met me halfway, and in the long run it's NBD. My sister found it very frustrating, but you can't treat your mom like an employee, so she just stopped having my mom babysit. Same thing with tv, treats, bedtime, discipline, etc. My mom respects about 90% of my boundaries, but I'd rather my kids have the love that comes with it. My sister would rather hire a nanny who follows all her instructions. [ Reply | More ]

This is very insightful. I would love to take care of my grandchildren when I'm a grandparent, and I hope to have the energy to do so, and also the awareness that I need to abide by my child's instructions when I do it. I don't want to be one of those GP who's like "new safety rule? Pshaw, we never did that when you were a baby and you're still alive!" [ Reply | More ]

Family support is the best kind. It is the one thing that is really lacking for a lot of families in NYC. It is not just the practical part, but the emotional dimension. This assumes you have a good relationship with your family, of course. [ Reply | More ]

I have an older DD and a younger DS. Love them both to pieces. I must admit though I felt guilty when pregnant with DS not feeling as attached to him as to DD, but it makes a kind of sense, at the time I didn't know him and I had been attached to her for several years. Now he's 3 and I love him dearly. I think it was nice to experience both a boy and a girl, though they are their own people regardless of their genders. [ Reply | More ]

So I have just one child. I REALLy wanted a girl. I just saw myself with a daughter for some reason. So I purposely did the earliest test I could do for gender because I wanted to know early and adjust if it ended up being a boy. I know this is statistically irrelevant, but right before my pregnancy, I had 4 different girlfriends have daughters. So we were all joking that I was up for the boy. Ha. And the test confirmed that I was expecting a boy. You know, I took about 24 hours to adjust and then I was just kind of over it and got excited about having a boy. And I'm one of those people who became a full convert. Maybe it's because I only have one. but I can't imagine myself with a daughter. I am so over the moon about my son. Little boys are just the best. They're so cute. They LOVE their moms. Nothing against men, but they're super basic. They're no drama. I spend time with my friend's daughters...and I love them, but the screaming and princess dress fights can get a little crazy. :) I think you'll be surprised. I know your daughter is amazing, but your son will be amazing in different and fun ways as well. Also, he will be able to pee on a tree when you're deep in the park and don't want to hike back a half mile to the restroom. [ Reply | More ]
