Sure, the holidays are coming and that's always a harder time for someone like your sister. I vote for some tough love: Tell her to get out there and get dating. The life she says she wants is not going to come knocking on her door--she is going to have to be out there to find it. I very rarely ask. Her job has gotten much easier this year since kids are now in school. [ Reply | More ]

np: wait, what? since when is it not acceptable to ask your nanny if she can babysit (at additional pay) on the weekends? we have rarely saked (maybe 3x in 10 years) because we have family that love to babysit on weekends, but plenty of nannies like the extra pay from working occasional weekends! Because the Nanny is with your children for 50+ hours a week. Only ask of you absolutely can not find anyone our she volunteers. [ Reply | More ]

OP: 1. my nanny gets paid for 50 hours but works 30 max. 2. She had a medical appointment during the time I actually needed her (instead of scheduling it during the time I don't need her) and I had to take time off work. It goes both ways.... [ Reply | More ]

Like the other poster below said. Either get rid of her, cut her hours, or leave her the hell alone. Annoying her and nitpicking isn't doing anyone in this situation good. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think I am nitpicking here. I think having to leave my work early to accommodate a cosmetic medical procedure is no less to ask than a few hours of Saturday babysitting. [ Reply | More ]

np above: well, not every nanny is. but none the less, many of them want to work more hours and make more money, whether watching your kids or babysitting for other kids. asking is not a problem, and if nannies don't EVER want to babysit on weekends, they are free to say when hired or later on, I am not available on weekends period. i know nannies that have their own young kids and make it clear when interviewing that evenings and weekends are not available for them. I get this. I do. However, I really don't need full time nanny anymore and she does fraction of what she used to and still gets paid her regular rate. She also had a medical appointment this week and I had to leave work early to accommodate. It wasn't ideal for me either. [ Reply | More ]

If you don't need full time help, you let the nanny go. You don't just keep adding little annoyances until either she quits or you "justify" firing her. [ Reply | More ]

op: not hard. I hired someone already. I just find it crazy that she asked me to get home early from work this week because of medical appointment that she could have scheduled for any time before 2 pm any day and not effected me. She works 1/2 of the hours we actually pay for and will not accommodate a Saturday request even though she knows her job is shaky. [ Reply | More ]
