[ - ] Newly seperated friend (male) is moving out into a new apartment and needs everything new. He has plenty of money, but isn't a big spender. He likes quality and service, but hates shopping. Lives in Soho. With all that background, any ideas of places for him to shop for things like sheets, blankets, etc. and furniture? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Ikea for furniture. For linens, suggest Macy's as they always have a sale going on. [ Reply | More ]

if he has a lot of money, he can certainly do better than ikea. that crap will fall apart on him in just a few yrs. he sounds like the kind of guy that doesn't spend *unnecessarily*, kindof like my dh. he will buy pricey, QUALITY furniture that should last him years and years and still look good. try room and board. right around the corner. maybe some west elm mixed in. Room and Board for furniture - it's right there in Soho. Good quality to price ratio. Restoration Hardware for sheets and other things - I think they're in SoHo too. Both places should be able to call ahead to make an appointment and get good service. [ Reply | More ]

Sheets,m blankets - Frette Woodbury Sale (call and ask them to send selections and prices), good deals and he does not have to leave his home for this. Furniture - Ligne Roset- well constructed French modern furniture at very fair prices. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DH and I enjoy golfing together on the weekends. I am the better golfer, since I've been doing it my whole life, and DH is more of a beginner. DH has planned a golf trip with several other couples, but here's the catch -- the men will be golfing, while the women will "sit by the pool or go shopping," in DH's words. WTF??? Am I right that this is insane? I want to golf too. 94 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I can understand your frustration but I would look at it a little differently. It's not so much that he's trying to keep you from playing golf as it is that he's trying to have a day on the course with the guys. It's not personal and whether or not you're good or better at golf has nothing to do with it. Maybe there is a compromise here. One day the guys go alone, the next day you all play together. Or maybe you join another foursome (that day or another day on your trip) and let them have their time together. Either way, it sounds like you golf regularly and it seems important to him to have some time with his male friends. Let him have it. It's not about sidelining you. [ Reply | More ]

This is every family vacation with DH's family. Dad and brothers and BILs all golf. Women stay at the hotel with the kids by the pool. Warning, one SIL insisted for a few years on golfing with the men before she had kids. She made fun of the women sitting around "or shopping" and said she didn't let BIL do things without her. Basically she made everyone hate her for a few years and whisper behind her back and BIL was embarrassed. She eventually came around when she had kids and she mellowed out, but no one likes "that wife" who insists on coming to golf. It fucks up the entire dynamic of the trip and you look like a bitch. I hate the idea of 80/20. I don't think the uber-rich need tax breaks and I know the affordable housing ends up going to the politically connected. I don't think it's fair for mc taxpayers to subsidize any of it. I'm not up in arms about the 'poor door' bc they're still getting a great deal but I don't think it should have been made in the first place. [ Reply | More ]

No, it's not the same and you know it. What I'm saying is that I think it's questionable about whether these developers are adding any value creating these very small affordable buildings. This, actually - I think the attitude about keeping low-income people separate is gross, but at the same time, I don't even like the idea of these billionaire developers getting tax breaks for building one small building that benefits a very small number of people (who may or may not have gotten in because they know someone). We need a bigger-scale solution to the housing crisis. [ Reply | More ]

I'm still the same person (educated, DD in private) with the same values. It's just that my HHI took a nose dive. Why wouldn't you want to count me amongst your neighbors? Some of you commenting on this have no idea what you're talking about. I live in an affordable housing building. I work in the arts. Moving into this building is a dream come true and the majority of people living here have no idea that my HHI is any less than theirs. I didn't know anybody that helped me get into the building. It's not for connected people. I spent over ten years on a wait list and went through a very long interview process where they check my bank statements for the past three years and do multiple background and credit checks. The people who vet us really are helping people who will truly benefit. I am thankful every day for where I live. [ Reply | More ]

OR: No, we do not have a separate entrance. The only people with a separate entrance are people who live on the top three floors, because they are penthouses, and their seperate elevator open up directly into their apartments. Maybe 5 people use it. Everyone else in our 47 floor building use the same door (gasp). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My seven-year-old dd has a friend from pre-k who we (my dh and I) realized awhile ago was a terrible influence. Her parents are much, much more lenient about the girl's behavior (which is part of the issue). For quite awhile we were always busy and I finally said something about how my dd isn't wanting a lot of playdates and is mostly playing with school friends (they go to a different school). Girl's father is nice, but terrible experience every time we'd get together. Girl is out of control and huge impact on my DD. The question... feel bad because my dd still asks periodically whether she can see this particular friend. Better to cut it off now while I have some control, right?
