[ - ] While in DHs country of birth DC has been attending a local preschool. Last year for 4 mos and then after 8 mos back home we've been here 1 month. Last year she loved it but this year she hates it. Everyday she comes home saying some "friend" pushed her or something. Today (her last day before we leave again) she told me a friend called her "ugly" in the local language. She's been not wanting to go to school each day and pretty upset each day when she comes home. I told DH about the latest incident and he laughed and said she needs to toughen up. I could strangle him. She's a preschooler that gets dragged to another country and other school!! I honestly want to tell him it's the last time I am bringing her here if that's his attitude. Poor kid :( 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] My kid said he got in trouble in class yesterday for playing with erasers instead of paying attention. I asked him why he wasn't paying attention to the lesson and he said "because I already knew it and the teacher just kept going over the same thing over and over again." I told him that in the future he should just daydream in his head about his favorite video game when the teacher is teaching something he already knows. With the amount of time these kinds spend on laptops in class, there's got to be a better way to teach them, no? 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think telling him to daydream is a fine idea. In pubic schools, high stakes testing has made differentiated instruction impossible. If a kid tests a 1, they give up on him. If he's a 4, they ignore him. They can only afford to focus on getting the 2s to 3s. It's a serious problem. [ Reply | More ]

Do NOT say this to the kid. Talk to the teacher about giving him extra work to do quietly while she's reviewing, if at all possible. But it's not always the kid's call to say what he does and doesn't "already know" - for all he knows, she could be specifically going over a different method of solving something. [ Reply | More ]

They wouldn't put him in the more challenging class because he doesn't pay attention. He scored off the charts on aptitude test the school gives every kid, so they put him in the 'smart' class with the oldest teacher in the school who scared all the boys in the class (some of them stopped wanting to go to school) and who used to take away their recess if they forgot to bring permission slips back. So this year he's back in the 'regular' class bored to death. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DS8 loves most sports and and recently made the #2 team on the travel baseball team in our area. The benefit of this is higher level of play and non-parent coaches, but I'm realizing I'm surrounded by parents who think their kids are going to MLB in 10 years. Plus, next year he would likely need to drop soccer in order to play baseball in the fall with his team. Not to mention, he actually feels bad bc he didn't make the top team. In your experience, what are the benefits of doing a "club/travel" level of sport versus just staying in rec. where it would be more relaxed and he'd feel more confident about his skills since he'd be one of the better players. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My kid does travel soccer. REc soccer didn't work for him because it wasn't competitive and a lot of the kids didn't want to be there and didn't try/were distracted and he found it frustrating. He prefers playing with kids who are also in to it. No one is hoping their kid goes pro on his team, the kids just love soccer and want something more than a dad coaching them for 10 minutes before a game once a week. We also do rec baseball which is a better level than rec soccer IME so I am not sure the same things apply here, baseball is something kids do at the rec level only if they are more in to it because it is really boring and slow [ Reply | More ]

Really? Then what is her job during an in-class essay? [ Reply | More ]

are you the OP. I am not the OR, but her job is to assign the essay and then grade the results. No way is her job to police whether kids are writing. [ Reply | More ]

i posted again below. Was there any guidance given on steps? 5 days to write in class without any project steps would be difficult for some 5th grades (my 5th grade DD included). [ Reply | More ]

I believe it was a pretty open ended writing assignment meaning they weren't told what needed to be accomplished each day. [ Reply | More ]

You don't think it's her job to at least monitor? She's the teacher. That said, it's not an excuse for ds to slack off. [ Reply | More ]

You know a computer can assign the essay and grade the results, right? I'm really shocked to hear you say that a teacher has no responsibility while the kids are working. That's when s/he has the most responsibility, to see who is on track and who isn't. [ Reply | More ]

I don't agree if this was a one day, one period essay. sometimes you need to see where a kid is all by himself. I don't think her job is down once she gets the results -- then she needs to conference with some kids, give specific feedback, etc. Here -- for a 5 day assignment -- I do agree with you. So what exactly is she doing when she's supposed to be teaching. This is such classic slacker teacher nonsense. [ Reply | More ]

np: my oldest is only in 2nd grade, so I'm not familiar with how 5th grade works, but I would assume a teacher would at least check on students to make sure they are doing the assignment, no? [ Reply | More ]

Absolutely wrong, wrong, wrong. A teacher (a good one, at least) teaches. Giving an assignment, then simply grading it? That's not teaching. WTH was the teacher doing for those five days?! I would be LIVID at the TEACHER. DS is not to blame. Maybe immature, but that's true of 5th graders. - Signed, former teacher [ Reply | More ]

I would be angry too, but the first thing I would do is calmly inform my kid of the call, inform that the natural consequence of turning in 3 sentences is likely a grade of an F and ask what happened? [ Reply | More ]

I hope that I'd ask DS what the story was, and take it from there. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Sorry. Had to step away. I'm angry at DS (not the teacher!). I just don't understand. Teacher said they had FIVE days in class to write. So you wouldn't punish in any way? [ Reply | More ]

I really think you need to talk to DS and see what he says. Back when I was in school, there was a big step up in expectation in 6th grade and I floundered -- totally getting an "N" on a longterm social studies project when I just didn't understand what was expected of me. 6th grade was my worst year academically. I think 5th is the new 6th for kids these days. Was there any breakdown in what they were supposed to do each day or was the assignment just to write a history paper? [ Reply | More ]

op. yes, you're describing DS' experience this year I think. there wasn't a breakdown though the teacher told me my DS was the only one who failed to submit a complete essay. [ Reply | More ]

I think you need to get the grading rubric from the teacher and then decide for yourself if you are going to tutor him in how to break down the assignment or get him a tutor. If she doesn't realize this is what could be going on, she isn't a very good teacher. She should at least be willing to help you come up with some strategies. [ Reply | More ]

I would ask my ds to explain why he didn't write during the essay. I would also ask what's been going on since January. And then I'd take away screen time (if he gets that) until his grades improved. [ Reply | More ]

I am Asian so you can imagine I am very hard on my kids. But in this case, I would seriously doubt something wrong with the teacher. If the students were writing the essay in class for 5 days, how is it possible that the teacher did not know dc had trouble with it and did not offer help? [ Reply | More ]
