I was reading another message board where someone German was telling me they are getting really pissed off by people telling them they live in a war zone in Germany with muslims waiting to jump out of the bushes to rape them around every corner. He said, actually, the largest surge in domestic crime rates in Germany is from the alt-right (recht) in Germany, and crime from the right BY FAR surpasses any crime by refugees/immigrants. LA Times skews to Trump, it's been well documented why. You realize that over the same 15 months they keep resampling the same 2500 people over and over again, right? They resample them in groups of 400+ every 6 weeks as an experiment to see how media trends in an election affect the same people over time. If you start with a group that oversampled republicans to start, and ask them how they "feel things are going" every 6 weeks, you're not looking at real national data. You're looking at the feelings of 2500 people. No more, no less. [ Reply | More ]

Could be. It's certainly not in line with any of the other traditional polls. LAT/USC is an experiment for this election. Other polls keep sampling different people. Over time, among many polls, there are trends. This is a poll to detect trends and influences within a same sampling of people, over the course of an election. They are attempting to tie election events (rallies, tweets, news items) to effects on how the same voter feels over time. [ Reply | More ]

He hated his dad (my grandfather, who was kind of crappy) and as soon as he got old enough to turn the tables on his dad, I think he realized he enjoyed it, and kept repeating the pattern throughout his life. If you had a desk and bulletin board in a public area of your home (like a kitchen) would you be mad if someone looked at your things? What are the limits? Can they read things pinned to a bulletin board? Take them down to read the backside or see things tucked behind others? Look at the top item on a pile? Go through a stack of things (like mail) to see what else is in the pile? Open an envelope that has already been opened? Does it matter who it is? DD 8 is in day camp this week. It's mostly sports-oriented and at a gym where she goes during the year, but they have other activities too. Yesterday, the first day, they tie-dyed shirts. DD was excited for camp so wore her favorite outfit yesterday, and now there is indelible dye on it from the project. I wish they had warned us ahead of time that they would be dyeing so I could send a smock or a shirt she didn't care about. Would you say something? Or would it not bother you at all? DD will be upset when she sees that the dye didn't wash out. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] As the school year begins, I'm interested in some advice. My kid attends a typical very good UMC suburban public school. He is very young for his grade (silly us - we didn't even know that redshirting was a thing) and so in the early grades he was tagged with "behavior" issues because he didn't sit quietly in class. Now he's entering fifth grade, and he's obviously grown out of that behavior, but he's still tagged as a problem, I guess, so every year they put him in the class with the kids who need "extra help", even though he's plenty smart and actually scored highly on the aptitude tests they gave him. I've discussed it with the school, and of course they don't admit that they're tracking him, and say things like "we look at which teacher will be the best fit for your kid" , even though he's always in the inclusion class. He doesn't get any remedial help, doesn't get any behavioral reports, nothing like that. Honestly it's made me so upset with the school that I don't trust them about anything anymore. He has lots of friends and I think he'd be really upset to change schools, so I don't think that's going to work. What would you do to try to support the school and teacher when you have no trust in them? 46 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If you are positive he is not being a pain in the a$$ in class (because their are kids that dont have IEPs, that arent being written up etc that are still misbehaving in class) then you sit down with the teacher and the principal and you say enough is enough. 6 years in the CTT class is enough time. They would usually put my youngest in the inclusion class because she was kind and a great student. Fine for a year but after that we really felt she suffered. It really takes an amazing teacher to really make those classes work for everyone and those teachers are rare. Tell your school - enough is enough. He's been in inclusion classes too much for being a gened student. My dd did catch up in Middle school but it should have never been. Stick to your guns with this if you really feel he's not being served. [ Reply | More ]

See what she posted below. This was my child's experience also and it took her a couple years in middle school to catch up and work at the level she was capable of. Because if you have a kid in the school system for a few years, you see they use certain kids as little assistants. They are smart and well behaved and if the parents dont put their foot down, they will be slotted for this class every year. If they are not in the class, they will always be partnered with a child with difficulties in class. [ Reply | More ]

My major concern is that the teachers essentially tell him to work by himself while they concentrate on the other students who need a lot more help. Just because you don't get reports of bad behavior doesn't mean it isn't still an issue. Perhaps the reason he isn't misbehaving to the point that you hear about it is because he's in a class with two teachers, one of whom is trained to deal with dcs with behavior problems. The school may think that if he moves into the gen ed class his behavior may be more of an issue. I'm not saying don't discuss it with the school. I'm saying be aware that this could be their argument for keeping him where he is. [ Reply | More ]

I wanted more Jewish families in town. After a few years, when we were ready to move to a bigger house, we moved an hour away to a really terrific town in Morris County. Not worth it to just beach it in SE Asia if you are coming from the East Coast. Try somewhere in Mexico or try a new island if you want something different. [ Reply | More ]

No. I agree, a beach is a beach is a beach. I flew to Hawaii years ago, and 15 minutes after sitting on the beach I thought "huh. Pretty much the same as home." [ Reply | More ]

You have only been to some of the major islands. Go to St Barths. That is my top recommendation. There are a lot of smaller islands like Bequia (in the Grenadines) or Mustique. Charter a sailboat for the week with a captain and sail the British Virgin Islands or St Vincent and the Grenadines. That is an incredible trip. Barbados is really nice too [ Reply | More ]

Cool idea, thanks. What's the ballpark figure for chartering a sailboat for a week? Any company recommendations? [ Reply | More ]

Moorings is reasonable and I've sailed the BVIs with them many times. It's amazing! [ Reply | More ]

What is your budget? The moorings is the most popular company down there. But there are a ton. It all depends on the size of the boat. For a crewed boat you will have a captain and a cook. You eat many meals on the boat so there is a cost savings there [ Reply | More ]

For some reason, I think the cost of the crew is 400-500 a day for both people. Then the cost of your food. The boat can range about 3k-10k for the week plus your food [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I work now but would like the option of SAH at some point after DH and I have kids. We talked about it and his view is that it's only worth it for me to work if we are making comparable $ at that point, and that SAH is more feasible if I'm making anything less than 400k since I'll be able to focus completely on the home/kids and him on making money. I don't have a firm view on this now and am looking for different perspectives. Thoughts, UB? 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Just don't get trapped. I am in late 50s and have seen many women stay home, lose career and need to go back either because DH lost job or they lost DH. [ Reply | More ]

I think 400 is probably a bit high for the cut off but if it works then you go for it. I was making $7/hr when I got pregnant 10 years ago so it was a very simple decision to have me stay home. I do everything regarding home and kids and DH focuses on work. It has worked for us but the calculations would be different if DH made less money and I had the potential to make more. Why do you need to make this decision ahead of time before you either have dcs or reach this kind of earning level? Do you also spend time thinking about what you would do if you won a lottery? [ Reply | More ]

This isnt something that you can plan ahead for. I left a job making 175K and my husband made about the same. He makes about 300ish now and I recently went back to a mom type job after 10 yrs and make 80ish. We are doing fine. Despite the risk and sacrifice, I would not have missed that time. You miss so much working full time when you add in a commute etc. [ Reply | More ]

I dont even want to answer this because I feel like I am being trolled. Have a baby and then be gone 10-12 of their waking hours. Come home at the worst part of the day to a screaming, tired, hungry baby. Make dinner.Give them a bath, read them a book and put them to bed. Do you think anything nice/pleasant transpired in the 10-12 hours while you were gone? [ Reply | More ]

I think it's worth it to keep working even if you're only breaking even after child care and expenses, because a big gap in employment will definitely set you back. That is unless you feel personally driven to be a SAHM. It sounds like your DH is largely motivated by how much easier his life will be with a full-time homemaker, and that's a legitimate interest, but you need to look long term for yourself too. I say this as a permanent SAHM, btw (DD is going into third grade this year). [ Reply | More ]

Depends on you and db. I think working part time is the best of both worlds, even if you make mid-five figures, because you keep your toes in the water, but still have plenty of time with dcs. Even if your dh is making half of what he hopes (e.g. 500k) and you are making half of what you hope (200K) I don't see how you'll really get enough time with dc, unless you have unicorn jobs, and that point, it's not like you'd be working bc you needed the money. I personally hated SAH - hated the drudgery/tediousness with dcs, am not the patient/nurturing type, had no family or friends and felt was isolated, felt like there was this weird power dynamic in our marriage... on the other hand, I have some friends with great networks, who love the opportunity to sah, dhs love having fewer home responsibilities, etc. It's hard to know what will work for you actually have db [ Reply | More ]

That's a fine plan BUT it relies on DH being able to make a lot for a long time OR thr family being able to live well below the standard of living his income would otherwise provide. Too many people don't make it past 50 (sometimes 45) in high income jobs. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think you can have a firm view on this until after you have a child. I know so many women who said they would stay at home, only to have a child and decide they want to work...and the reverse too. [ Reply | More ]
