[ - ] The Trump posters are so tiresome in their refusal to look at actual facts. The cray cray links. The Breitbart crap. The Rasmussen poll (Guess what, Hill is up by 6 and climbing) the fact that Trump has no money to finance a national campaign and the convention is headed toward disaster. Today, instead of campaigning, Trump is ripping fellow Republicans who won't support him! I can't decide if these posters are actually men or uneducated white women who don't like other women, or women in bad marriages who are just pissed off or nouveaux rich women or what......What is the opposite of lib-tard? Trump-turd? Trumprick? OMG he is on TV now ranting about how Republicans who lost won't support him. He sounds like such an incredible baby.... 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Similar situation with DW's step mother. She is a very Type A personality who would love to cut dw out of her fathers life. What we did when my father died (no family drama here) we are Reform and another sibling is Conservative. We sat Shiva at parents house for all their friends for 3 days and then my brother sat at his house on the fourth and fifth day and we were invited to attend if we wish. When I grew up in the 70's in the south poor black and white Americans worked on the farms, were the nannies, gardeners, housekeepers, and laborers. Now in this same town they are all on welfare and the illegals work on the farms. Nanny, housekeeper, and gardener jobs mostly dried up as wealthy people moved out of town but having the illegals working for less took what was left of those also. 57 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes, but much of the price of food is not driven by farm labor. There are retail and distribution costs (and profit) and farm non-labor costs. I think that the cost to our society of cheap farm labor is far greater than the benefit in food price. [ Reply | More ]

its not just farm labor (a good part of which is done by migrant workers on visas that allow them to only do that). undocumented people work at every step of our food chain - slaughterhouses, food prep, restaurants. and its not just that the wages are low; they accept working conditions American citizens in general won't (hours, living conditions, etc.). all of which saves money in producing food. I think fewer people would have nannies. But, maybe that's a good thing? Maybe it would mean that daycare's would adjust a little to better meet needs. And just maybe, some work places would adjust to working families a little better. That said, I don't think the 70's south is your best model of how one would want the world to be. [ Reply | More ]

This often makes sense economically, but it is really hard to get to work in practice. One reason we have income disparity now is that t people won't move to the work -- for all kinds of reasons, including that maybe one person in the family does have a job and it’s hard to give that up on the hope of two jobs, or better jobs, somewhere else, or you rely on grandma for childcare and she wants to stay with the rest of the family. Not to mention that moving cost s and if you have no money, how do you d that or even find a place to live. There’s room for government involvement here but lord knows our congress would never support it. [ Reply | More ]

Don't you think that if they could relocate they would already have done that a long time ago ???? It's not like the slums are awesome places to live. You are suggesting relocating entire populations of urban blacks (you know, the ones who actually shoot each other on the streets) to the places where they grow corn and potatoes. How happy do you think white Farmers with guns are going to be with that? You think they want The Wire in Iowa? [ Reply | More ]

For crops it's nearly all of the price, agriculture is labor intensive. Also, believe it or not, most farmers like the way things are. The immigration backlash is already fucking up the 2016 season. Crops are rotting without migrant workers able to get to them. [ Reply | More ]

"An immigration policy focused on closing the border would shift up to 61 percent of U.S. fruit production to other countries due to domestic labor shortages, sending jobs to Mexico and other nearby competitors, according to a 2014 study commissioned by the American Farm Bureau Federation, the largest U.S. farmer group." I know what you mean. I live in South Florida. I went to Europe in late April/early May. Of course, I left my down jacket at home. I'm not a wuss! Haha. It was COLD and even Germans and Austrians were wearing down coats. It was even snowing in Paris and England! Needless to say, I was chilly even with a cashmere sweater as a base layered with fleece layered with a quilted jacket. DH broke down and bought a down vest but I soldiered on. Eventually the weather got warmer, but I learned my lesson. I will always pack down from now on. [ Reply | More ]

It was unpleasant. I have many down jackets, vests, parkas and coats precisely for my cold weather travels, but it didn't even dawn on me to bring a down jacket in late April. Kind of hard to imagine such cold when it was 85 degrees at home. For the first week we were OK and then all hell broke loose. We were freezing at MIL's house in the north of England and in the hotel in Paris and Provence. They comped us our stay in Paris because the heater didn't work properly and the technician could not repair it and we slept in our coats and gloves in Provence. From now on, unless it's July or August, I'm packing down! I already travel with a heavy cashmere throw everywhere I go. I put that thing to good use every night! [ Reply | More ]
