[ - ] At universal pre-k open house last night the teacher said there was no curriculum. Just centers, lunch, nap, outside play, snack, centers, then home. No curriculum of animals or plants or shapes or letters or seasons or anything. The focus was entirely on social skills, free play and happiness. What would you think about this? 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

When I had my first kid, I would have found this to be horrible. Now, with the perspective of three kids who have been through both "academic" preschools and "play-based" preschools, I'd choose play-based ALL the time. If you do even basic stuff with letters, numbers, Leap Frog DVDs, etc. at home, they will get plenty of "school" and the play is so much more valuable at that age. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah. Agree. The reason that rich private school kids go to Harvard isn't because they are geniuses, it's because their parents are loaded, often legacies, and have tons of connections. Not because Horace Mann can pick the 4 year olds who are likely to become true geniuses and then foster their innate gifts in such a special snowflaky way that they can turn them into Harvard material like magic. Right, but that is largely because their parents are well educated and have the money to invest in extra curriculars, and have family values that include education being important. OR: not knocking the education or experiences at all. Just doesn't make your "life" as some of these clowns seem to believe. Also, most people I graduated with live very average (and happy) lives. This is embarrassing. I don't know. I work out with a personal trainer 2X a week and he sets the machines and hands me free weighs. When I do dead lifts I do 25lbs in each hand, but other than that I don't know!!!! I do cardio on my own. [ Reply | More ]
