[ - ] This is my view on schools in the US versus Europe. In Europe, starting with fifth grade, every teacher needs a masters degree in the subject he/she teaches. Universities are roughly equally good and comparable to the top 50 US universities (I can compare them because u went to university in Europe and to a top ivy in the US and it was actually harder and more competitive in Europe). If there are teachers I the US who went to third tier universities, they will not have the intellectual capacity to teach anything valuable. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You make a good point, but you oversimplify. first of all, some european countries have terrible public schools and some great. Finland much better than sweden for example [ Reply | More ]

The performance of a teacher in high school is highly correlated to the teacher's IQ test score. In the USA the women with the highest IQ refuse to become teachers. They find jobs that may not pay more than teaching but that are more fun. [ Reply | More ]

in some ways we Americans should take pride in the fact that the women who become teachers are so lacking in IQ. it is a testament to how we have opened law, medicine, dentistry and a whole host of interesting professions up to women and they are finding good opportunities [ Reply | More ]

I am surprised that someone that went to a TT (US and Europe) would dare to say that a teacher that didn't go to a "TT" doesn't have the capacity to teach anything valuable. The University is pretty important but the student is who makes the best of it. You sound narrow minded tbh. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Specialized High Schools - Are they really all that different in terms of rigor and homework? I know they have different offerings and different subject focus and different sizes, and they have somewhat different caliber of students, are they pretty similar in terms of education and workload? At every tour, I heard 2-3 hrs hw in frosh and soph years, more in junior because of APs and then take it easy in senior year. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My nephew went to Stuy and I have to say I was consistently impressed with the NON Math and Science offerings. I knew those would be good. He took a great books class, did moot court with a partner from Cravath supervising, took a play writing seminar. It was pretty amazing. He now goes to U of Chicago. [ Reply | More ]

FWIW, many students at specialized high schools start taking APs in sophomore year. And they take them in senior year, too. They all have hw and are rigorous although it is probably possible for kids who seek out the least rigorous classes at all of them. What makes the largest specialized high schools different is simply that they can offer more different kinds of classes, whereas for a school like HSAS, it's common for students who take them at the nearby college. And some specialized focus on math and science, some technology, Bx Science has a big science research class sophomore year (I think), Latin and HSAS are more humanities focused and smaller, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. This is the impression I get. Two days until the SHSAT and dc has to figure out how to rank the schools. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 10.23.14, 03:00 PM Flag

Good luck! My only advice is really to rank according to the school dc likes and not get hung up on thinking because the cut off score of one is higher than another, that means all the students at the lower cut off school actually scored lower so the school with the higher cut off must be better. There are obvious differences in size, and that's important. And differences in focus and that's important, too. And finally, do take commute into consideration. If you live on the UWS or UES, you can pretty much get to most of the schools with a reasonable commute (except Staten Island Tech). But traveling from Bklyn to the Bx or vice versa, or Manhattan to SI etc. does matter for some students and you should know your kid. But you can't go wrong with any specialized -- it may turn out not to be the right choice for your particular dc, but they are all good schools that parents in the affluent suburbs would be thrilled to have as a choice.
