In walking around my UMC town this summer all I've seen is SAHMS with their daughters at lunch, out shopping, at the nail salon, in the supermarket, walking the dog, etc etc. But they're never with their sons. Do they just leave them home? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] Is anyone else kind of sick of supporting local businesses? I mean, I get it, we're supposed to support the little guy for the sake of our communities. But I get such terrible service at most of these places that its easier and more convenient for me to go to a big box store, get what I want off the shelf with no help, and use the self checkout. I'm sick of having to deal with some store owner's attitude, like they're doing me a favor to check to see what they have in stock. I can't tell you how many times I go to a place and I say "hey, do you carry XYZ?" And they just say "nope" and stare at me. Thanks for the help, I guess? Add to that the fact that you have to pay 30% more if they do have it in stock (at the places that actually take debit cards) and it's no wonder so many of these places are going out of business. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It depends on selection and price. I don't mind paying a little more for local as long as the selection is good, quality is as good or better than national retailer (which is usually the case IME) and the service is decent. But I still make trips to chains/national stores for many items. [ Reply | More ]

NP: most of the small business owners I deal with regularly are more than happy to order something for me if they don't have it. There is one merchant in my store who had the product fed-xed overnight to her store because she knew I needed it in a short time period. Part of the thing I like about Mom & Pop stores is that you build relationships. It comes in handy if you're sitting on a board or involved in some kind of fundraising and can approach these people for support. I shop in big box stores too when I need to, but love having the option of small stores where you're personally known. [ Reply | More ]

I sort of agree. As much as I want to support small business, a few places in my neighborhood have very surly or downright rude employees and owners. I do not think it's their job, though, to find something for you if they don't carry it. At one store, the owner has offered to order something for me since she did carry the manufacturer's goods - to me, that was above and beyond of her. [ Reply | More ]

Bad, bad idea. My SIL did this - they said they only had the money to pay for food or drinks, but not both, and decided that drinks were more important. Everyone at the wedding ended up getting sloppy drunk, and people were starving. Finally, one of the guests stepped up and bought pizza for the entire crowd.
