[ - ] What do you think of costume jewelry? For example the merchandise found at stores like Banana Republic and J. Crew and Ann Taylor, do you wear this? I can't decide. It looks nice but it is junk, right? 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know about physical discipline, but there is definitely not enough respect others. I don't think this is US-specific, though. It is very much the case in the northeast and among more wealthy people. But how can kids learn to be respectful when their parents don't know how to do it themselves, much less teach their children to do it? [ Reply | More ]

My parents were pretty strict with discipline and expectations - 4 of us in 6 yrs - but never used physical discipline. I have to teens - same with them. [ - ] Hahaha. This was just sent to me by a friend of a friend who must work at a hospital or something. This was supposedly an email from the parent of a kid who didn't get in. Priceless:"Will you be posting a list and brief biography of those selected for the summer internship program? My middle class, hard-working kid applied and got nowhere in the process despite some solid qualifications and great dedication. To be frank, I warned him from the start that this program is for Ivy League over-achievers and kids of well-connected physicians. Notice now your own academic pedigree, fueling my suspicion that [your HYP school] and its privileged buddies are over-represented." 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I wouldn't send a note like this, but I tend to agree. It's infuriating for "regular" people to follow the lie of "try hard, apply yourself, and you'll reap the rewards" only to find after 15 years of doing that that the kids of the connected people were just going to waltz in anyway, regardless of what they did. And not because of nepotism (although that helps) - but because their parents already know the criteria. They know that if you want this internship you have to butter up to this person who likes kids who study microbiology. So they tell their kids "take a course in microbiology" before the applications even come out. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Best friend from high school is destroying her life and we are not speaking as it is too wrong to give her unrealistic optimism. She is married to a great guy who is a provider and father but she is no longer attracted to him. She is MC SAHM, with cleaning lady, no desire to work, goes to gym, gets hair and nails done, drives kids around and shops. She is cheating and asked him for a divorce and her kids are 10 and 12. Huge mortgage, leased cars, credit card bills and she believes she will keep kids, house and lifestyle and DH will pay for it. I gave her cash to talk to a lawyer who I hoped would tell her the truth. She yelled at me that she only wants to talk to people who are supportive and everything will bet great. I asked what after child support is done and she says she is sure she will meet someone by then. She is not speaking to her mother either as she gets mad if you don't feed her the bullshit she wants to hear. WWYD? 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We still have to cook for kids (vacation house), we take the kids to the pool, probably 100 ft from the house anyways, we don't go out and enjoy the fine cuisine, or go on tours, or even visit museums, we have to follow a schedule at least 8hrs/day. If you are going to bring your nanny along you need to pay accordingly don't even for a second believe you are making me a favor, because if i were to go on a vacation I wouldn't go it with your or your kids.
