which school? Basically, there is a lot of "exploration" time during the day but each material (books, blocks, legos, chalk etc) has to be taken out, used and returned in the manner expected. It's lovely to have kids develop their interests, but can lead to uneven development (DS was a great reader lousy at fine motor) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I don't understand SAHMs who think the kids need to be doing something outside all day, every day. I am a SAHM and I can't get it together to do this. Some days I need at least half a day to clean and do laundry, or another half a day to go to Target or food shopping. Most of the SAHMs I know are constantly taking the kids on all day hikes, followed by the pool, followed by a bbq at someone's house. If I keep that pace up, my house is a disaster, nobody has clean clothes, and I get super crabby if I don't have some time to myself to read and have tea. I think everyone else just thinks I'm lazy if I turn down the hike/beach/museum days once in a while to clean and have the kids chill at home with legos or (gasp!) a movie. (And I can hear the other moms now asking me if I really let my kids watch a movie at home on a sunny day! Yes, I really do!) So for those of you who are out and active all day, when do you clean, or go to Target, or just decompress at home? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

there's no harm in trying to give it to someone else, but you probably won't find a lot of takers. My sister accepted mine, but only because we are closely related. Even if it's perfectly sterile, most people will think ick, especially coming from a stranger. [ Reply | More ]

Though his food allergies were eczema, missed a speech delay, we have been waiting months for her to sign off on a hearing test. Not concerned at how little he sleeps (only 8 hours a night). I've worked for many other families an have never seen a pediatrician so "laid back" or "careless". [ Reply | More ]

Op: I'm not concerned about my job being harder. My concern is that the pediatrician seems careless and this is a kid with a lot of medical issues. I am also the type of person that likes to get clearance for issues. I think all of these things combined are a sign of her not being the best pediatrician for this child. But at the end of the day, he's not my kid and my opinion doesn't matter that much. I've just seen much better/more attentive pediatricians in the city. [ Reply | More ]

those aren't serious medical issues. a lot of people have eczema, hearing problems and don't sleep well and get on just fine. did you consider that it isn't good for children to get a lot of unnecessary testing and to be exposed to germy doctor's offices constantly? if the hearing issue affects school, you can be sure the child's teacher will tell the parents about it. Does that means his mom still gives him those foods or are you responsible for meals? This one I think you could put it as a question and say that you've noticed that when he eats x he seems to have this reaction, do you think it might be an allergy/ should maybe try skipping it for a while, etc. On sleep, presumably parents wish he slept more too. Or are they keeping him up late at night? Does he need to be woken up in morning? [ Reply | More ]

The food issue was resolved when the baby almost died. So now he has been fully tested and we know what to feed him. It's just a growing list of oversights by the pediatrician. And re: sleep, mom and dad are miserable. I've suggested an earlier bedtime a million times and they are too afraid to try it. He sleeps about 9pm to 5am on a good night. Wakes up for hours in the middle of the night a few times a week. I feel bad for them. Wish they could get the support they need to try to fix this before it becomes a bad habit...but really nothing I can do about it. I did get bedtime moved 1.5 hours earlier but I think more would be better. [ Reply | More ]
