[ - ] How to know when to throw in the towel on a relationship with someone who won't address their mental illness? In our case its dh's depression. It's been 12 years. I want the best for him but I'm totally drained and now being treated so poorly that I feel as though it's wrong to stay. We have a 2yo 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know (and had some times when I wondered that, too), but it's probably easier at age 2 than if you wait a few years. Is he getting any treatment or seeking any help? [ Reply | More ]

No. He has in the past but is now dealing with chronic pain and taking pain meds again (ongoing thing, major surgeries). He's completely in denial that he ever had an issue, turning it into a conspiracy theory against me and part of how I "always get my way", am manipulative, etc etc [ Reply | More ]

OP again. Sorry to be so long winded. Long story short it's a roller coaster and I'm finally coming to the realization that that's all life will ever be with him. The worst part is that he speaks to me horribly in front of our daughter which is tipping the scales towards leaving. The lows are getting too low to make it worth sticking around for the highs. Sorry. There's no answer. You don't deserve to be treated badly. You ate justified in deciding that you can't stay with him if he won't seek treatment but I understand why it's so hard. It will not get better in its own, though. Good luck whatever you decide to do. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I completely understand. You should speak with a divorce lawyer to find our about custody, what is needed for supervised visitation vs joint custody, etc. If you push him into therapy knowing that you plan to leave, be prepared that he may accuse you of setting him up (not a reason not to do it, but just know that might be how he sees it). Information about your options can only help you decide what to do, how and when. [ Reply | More ]

It's clearly not as much effort as writing and mailing cards, but in some ways it seems more personal and authentically coming from DC (who, at 5, is not really writing her own cards). Absolutely not. When I lived in SF (not too far from Union Square), it cost me $350/month just for a reserved space in a parking garage. And SF is NOT like Manhattan; public transit SUCKS in terms of coverage outside of a relatively limited area, so I really did need that car, as do a lot of people. Costs like that add up quickly and spiral out-of-hand before you know it. Private schools. Ever-rising rents. Taxes and fees. "Entertainment." It's a cash vortex; say farewell to your savings. Coke really can. If someone has a predisposition to addiction, impulsively or any instability, coke can knock then from high performing / high achiever to disaster pretty quickly. Other than family history, which is not the case for the people I'm thinking of, don't know that there's any way to know who is pre-disposed. Of course. No one would ever suggest the majority of users have a problem. Everything in moderation is ad applicable to cocaine as to ice cream [ Reply | More ]

Nobody should use coke, but well-adjusted people doing something that feels good usually doesn't cause a problem. Ice cream, spending, gambling, drinking, etc. can all do the same. [ Reply | More ]

It is true that some people can use coke occasionally without a problem but putting ice cream in the same category as gambling and coke is just silly. It makes you heavy, that's not even close to making you bankrupt, unemployed, violent, etc., all of which does happen to some people who use too much coke. [ Reply | More ]

I wasn't saying they're comparable things. I was saying that privileged, together people can consume both in moderation w/o harming themselves [ Reply | More ]

I do think it has a lot to do with privilege, because wealthier people don't usually get arrested or have their kids taken away for using drugs, whereas low-income people do. [ Reply | More ]

No, the people who can do it in moderation without harming themselves remain privileged and together. The ones who cannot do it in moderation often ruin their lives even if they started out privileged and together. You have it backwards. [ Reply | More ]

Again, confusing cause and effect. For each of your anecdotes about doing lines with successful people, there is a wealthy, high-achieving addict barely holding it together or OD-ing. Certainly you know that is true. [ Reply | More ]

I'm the one who disagreed with you above about coke (but am not the ice cream person). I wouldn't call your taken on drugs as expressed here "reasonable" - just ill-informed and incorrect. I happen to support decriminalization, and think most people van do drugs and be fine, but you are just wrong that people who end up screwed up from drugs necessarily were or would have been screwed up anyway.
