It's a way to cut down on guests bc not everyone will be able to make it. If it's someone you are close to then make the effort. If you aren't that close but the destination is awesome and the timing works then go. However, there is almost no circumstance where I can imagine going to a 7-day wedding. [ Reply | More ]

op: Dd was 2 years old and MIL was babysitting for a few hours in the afternoon. She took my dd out to the playground for a bit. Apparently dd pooped in her diaper and rather than go back home (5 minute walk), MIL reached in the diaper, took the poop out, placed it behind the bench in the playground and continued to let my dd play for another half hour. When I returned, MIL proudly told me what she had done and felt she did the right thing by not cutting dd's playtime short. [ Reply | More ]

MIL lived three hours away and was no longer driving. A few weeks before DD turned three (which was happening on a Sunday), she asked us what we were doing to celebrate. We said we had signed up to provide the coffee hour food at church and would bring cupcakes and get everyone to sing happy birthday. She replied, Oh, because I thought you might like to come up here and I'll get a few of my friends to come in for a glass of wine to celebrate. DH said Thanks, mom, but we're all set. Maybe we'll come see you later in the month. Over the several weeks leading up to the birthday, DH and MIL repeated this exact conversation about once a week. So birthday arrives, we go to church, provide coffee hour food, sing Happy Birthday with 100 of our closest Lutheran friends, and serve cupcakes. Around 5:00 that afternoon, phone rings. It's MIL. She says, "What happened? I expected you here at 3:00 o'clock today for Suzie's birthday!" And no, she wasn't demented -- just stubborn. Her way of getting what she wanted over the years was just to keep suggesting until people gave up and gave in. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Any MD/gastro mom, or any other who has dealt with same and can give some advice? In my mid 40s and very good general health. But in the past few years I have often had minor stomach issues, which can still be a pain and last from just a few days to a few weeks. Have had my last colonoscopy a year ago, they removed a 2 millimeter polyp, but said everything looks good. I have seen a gastroenterologist because I would get mild but persistent abdominal cramping/generalized discomfort which would last a few hours, sometimes a day (but symptoms always go away at night) sometimes I may have gas and sometimes 2-3 bowels movements per day (when the norm for me is usually one). Gastro said it sounds like IBS, that I should just learn which foods (if any) trigger it but also relax as much as possible... From all I have read IBS usually comes with diarrhea or constipation- and I don't have neither one, my bowel movements are pretty much in the norm... And for the last 2 days something new: I have had excessive gas with some discomfort (no cramps) regardless of eating light all day (my diet has always been a healthy one)and last night after dinner I had a bowel movement that seemed never ending... I worried, as a couple of hours later I had another. Today still some gas, but better. These symptoms drive me crazy because I tend to worry and can't understand them. I also wonder If maybe being at the age of peri menopause could have something to do with it? Just confused. Does anyone here ever deal with these issues? Trying to relax and hope it will pass. Thanks and apologies for the long post 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think if you had more than one colonoscopy ("my last colonoscopy a year ago") and they're finding nothing, you could have some IBS stuff going on with some triggering foods. If your diet is rigidly fixed and your symptoms have changed, I'm not sure what to tell you. You've had all the right tests to find something serious. Personally, I think as we get older, our bodies do change and there is new stuff that starts going on that is not our experience with youth. Doesn't all mean it's sinister, especially if you are not in pain or discomfort and you are not seeing things like blood in stool. You can read your body all the live long day like tea leaves if you want. Some people do that. [ Reply | More ]

You are taking this too personally. They're just making conversation. They would ask the same question to someone who works outside the home if they knew that person was retiring soon. It's not an accusation that you don't deserve a retirement, it's a question about what new adventures in life you're up to. Maybe you always wanted to travel to Thailand. Maybe you want to learn to speak Italian. Maybe you've always wanted to sing in a local community choir group. It's just a small talk question. Don't be so defensive. No one gives a shit what choices you make in life. [ Reply | More ]

You come across as insecure in your choice. Own it and just say "I plan on doing exactly what I do now when my kids are at school from 8:30-4:00" [ Reply | More ]

op: You make a lot of assumptions. What if I don't plan to do that at all? What if I plan to sell the house, downsize, move to Florida and take up windsurfing and coastal environmental preservation initiatives? [ Reply | More ]

I DEFINITELY plan to sell the house and downsize -- have to keep the kids from moving back in. I'll probably give them the new address though. Probably. [ Reply | More ]

It's just general curiosity and conversation. If I knew a cop that was retiring at 45 I would ask if he had plans for what to do later. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Ok there is a triple width townhouse for sale on 62nd st. When combined, they would have 30,000 square feet of space. Potential floorplans have 15 bedrooms and a 70 foot long living room. Crazy crazy. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Surprisingly, that's less than half the size of Prince's Paisley Park compound in Minneapolis, which has slightly over 70,000 square feet of floor-space, along with a location within easy walking-distance of a Target store and a number of fast-food chain outlets. [ Reply | More ]
