It's an important book. It was release about 20 years ago, so I suppose it may seem "dated" in some ways, but I would be curious to hear what anyone thought was "weak." It is a pretty brilliant illustration of critical issues in feminism, religious extremism, religion in politics, and environmental crisis. [ Reply | More ]

One example of an alleged quid pro quo cited by the Times and other sources involved the State Department’s backing of a free-trade agreement with Colombia that benefited a company founded by a big donor to the Clinton Foundation. Hillary opposed the trade deal when running for president in 2008 because of the South American country’s poor record on workers’ rights. But then the company, Canadian-based Pacific Rubiales, and its founder, Clinton Foundation board member Frank Giustra, donated “millions” to the foundation, The International Business Times reported. DS comes up to you and asks if you can put together a train set with him. You say no because it will get in the way as there are dozens of people in the home and there's no room on the floor for it. SIL walks in and says that she'll help DS put together the train set. DH's uncle oversees this interaction and says, "Well, look at that! SIL acts like more of a mother to DS than his own mom. [ - ] Weird post for UB, but perhaps someone can relate. A year after my father and sister died in an accident, I found out that I was pregnant. I was not married to my boyfriend because my family is European and we have different culture notions on marriage. My mother feels that marriage makes slaves of women. Anyhow, after DB was born, I longed to be near family as it is the cultural custom that one would move back home for a few months to share the experience of the child with the grandparents. I was depressed that we had this baby and I wasn't able to share her with my family, so when the opportunity came to relocate to DH's hometown, we took it up because we wanted to be near family. We initially stayed at their home and when we learned that our new home purchase would take a few weeks longer than expected, we asked if we could continue to stay with them. They said yes and we stayed for a total of 5 months. Anyhow, I have since found out that MIL thought that we expected them to raise DB, this was never the case as we never asked them for childcare help and she thought that I was going to abandon the baby with them. She tells all of her friends, "Yes, I am so lucky that she's a good mom because I absolutely thought that we were going to be stuck raising that baby!" DH and I have since married and I'm still annoyed by their comments. Should I discuss things with her or just let it be? 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

At a bare minimum, you take your dog out on a leash two times a day for a 15 minute walk, you don't let your dog off leash. Smaller breeds more forgiving if they have an area in the apartment they can move around in. If you cannot put 30 mins a day into a dog then do not get a dog. Seriously. I am helping you out here. Learning to live with loss is part of life. That said, you really need to be into pets to commit to them. I have had my pet for 40+ years. We're going out of this world together! [ Reply | More ]

Close. A parrot. BTW, did you know that a pet tortoise lived to be close to 300 years? It was born in the 1700s and died relatively recently. Crazy! [ Reply | More ]

They will be devastated but that's part of the point. It's a really important life lesson, and far better to learn with the loss of a pet than the loss of a family member. Pets can provide unconditional love and companionship for kids. That said if you don't want one don't get one. [ Reply | More ]

There are lots of great shelter dogs. Wouldn't it be great to give them a chance at happiness and a loving family? There's always heartbreak but there's a lot of love and happiness too but you have to be open to it all. [ Reply | More ]

The only time you ever have to get a dog is when the kids beg and plead for one. They'll swear they'll do all the care for Fido. They won't. [ Reply | More ]

It was really, really sad when we lost our first pet, but the look on dc's faces when I rang the doorbell and they opened it to see me standing there with our new little mutt is something I'll never forget. Just absolute joy. [ Reply | More ]

Why do you feel bad for me? Just curious. Only using UB speak. Anyway, no, no one minded. Maybe my mother because she had to take me to kleinfelds and wanted to buy the size 8 and make me fit into it, but kleinfelds knows what they're doing. They gave me a beautiful dress in my size and sewed in a different label. True story. [ Reply | More ]

Agree, because that will make family get-togethers and holiday celebrations so much more fun. I don't want the kind of DIL who leaves the skin on the turkey or serves gravy with the mashed potatoes - ick! I want someone who will serve a nice slice of raw pumpkin for dessert, not some sugary pie like the poors eat. Also, if she's not willing to put in the time up front to guarantee my grandkids have a complex about their weight, who will? Those eating disorders aren't going to create themselves!
