[ - ] I'm 5'8 and 150lbs, my body fat is 33%, Im 45 and I've been this size for over ten years. This summer I decided that I really want to lose weight, I've been working out consistently and logging every bite I eat. By logging I've realized that the reason I never lose a pound is because I over eat every day. Even on my great workout days I'll just eat more because I'm so hungry. Any tips from skinny people, people with this challenge who have overcome it? I don't need to be skinny but I really want to be healthier for my kids. I don't drink alcohol so it's all food that's my problem. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Thank you. Yes I'm hungry all the time, and I've so little will power. I'll grab a bite of something and then I can't stop. Does your weight fluctuate throughout the month? Mine does and my PMS has always been really bad so even if I've a good few weeks I get PMS and over eat so I'm back where I started each month. All excuses I know, I just have to get used to feeling hungry. [ Reply | More ]

Why does having PMS make you eat? Think of it the other way around. The day your period starts, you MUST exercise daily and skip all salt or sweets. Once it's over, you can return to normal. NP [ Reply | More ]

I am 47 and my weight has been consistently close to where I'd like it to be. For me over the past couple of years I've figured out that exercise alone doesn't do it anymore (I'm putting in 3-5 hours per week). For the past month I've started eating vegan for breakfast and lunch, and continue to eat for dinner whatever I make for the family. The scale has been slow to respond but the biggest change (and to your point) has been that I'm not overly hungry at each meal. I believe it's a combination of more fiber in my diet and less swings in my blood sugar levels. Din't resign yourself to feeling hungry all the time, it doesn't have to be that way. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I posted last week about a good friend who bailed on a professional event of mine (meant a lot to me) after I have traveled hundreds of miles for her own charity event several years in a row. Thanks to all of you who (rightly) told me I did not have to attend the event again this year. Anyway, I have to see her tomorrow for the first time since she bailed, and I just do not even want to deal with her. It's inevitable, as we'll be at the same social event. I keep telling myself to be polite and if she brings up my event, to acknowledge that it really sucked that she skipped it last minute (w/a text w/a ridiculous excuse - it was 5 mins from her) and if she brings up her event, to tell her that I doubt I'll be able to make it. I hate being petty, and i am so not the type to hold a grudge, but I further hate that she has put me in this position. I know. CSB. Just venting. Dreading having to go tomorrow but no choice. Sorry for the vent. Just on my mind tonight. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The end. I just...I am so not the type to stew, and it is really bothering me - the commitment I made to her and what's important to her (charity several hundred miles away several years in a row, showing up to smaller local events to support her), and she couldn't even drag herself 5 mins from her apt. It is what it is. I'm a big girl, and I can deal with it. It just stings, as someone said above, and I wish I didn't have to deal with it. (Thank you for listening!) [ Reply | More ]

You're right to be pissed off. But - if I can play devils advocate, she could have had something going on that she just couldn't get into. DH and I had to bail on a good friends bday party this year, and I gave a lame last minute excuse. In return, she did the same to me. I know she hasn't gotten past it. What she doesn't know, is the night of her DHs party, we were in a terrible dark fight. I found out my DH had gotten a big ticket he never paid. His license got suspended and we had to frantically pay it that night, basically wiping us out of discretionary funds. It sucked and was embarrassing, and not something I wanted to get into with her the night of her boyfriends party. [ Reply | More ]

OP: thank you. This is a good perspective. That said, her text and another mutual friend just explained it as "She had to be up early." You're right, could be something much bigger, but we are (were?) pretty close friends who often share nitty-gritty stuff. If she had texted and said: "DS is being an absolute PIA tonight and it's a nightmare around here" or whatever, I'd have been irritated, but may have understood a bit more. But thank you for your thoughts - it's good to keep in mind. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Chicago moms - honest question. Not trying to "troll" - why has Rahm been SUCH an awful mayor? I read that the number of murders in Chicago this year is on pace to be the highest since 1997. Rahm has literally rolled back two DECADES of public safety advances in a single year. Why isn't he facing impeachment? I can guarantee you that if de Blasio permitted 2,000 (!) murders in a single year (the per capita equivalent of Chicago's pace), his job would be in deep jeopardy. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

No, that answers the part about why we haven't impeached him--we can't. There's obviously way more--why he is bad, why he was reelected, etc. I can't fully answer those. Although money plays a huge part--no one could really afford to run against him, although no one reasonable even tried. He isn't our mayor--he belongs to much deeper pockets than the ordinary citizen has. And we're so used to corruption in Chicago and Illinois politics that we are more or less beaten into hopelessness. And, honestly, I think a lot of it comes down to racism. For the most part, most murders were contained to certain neighborhoods and to certain people, so it didn't feel like it was happening in "our Chicago." The violence is spreading, so criticism and outrage are starting to build. [ Reply | More ]

One thing that seems scary to me (as an outsider; not sure how residents feel) is how FEW serious crimes like murder/attempted murder are actually solved in Chicago. NYC invested a lot of money in detectives and crime labs, and it has helped a lot. Chicago seems like a place where murder is quasi-legal in many areas. Like the police will show up, collect the body, take a few photos, and that's the end of the "investigation." [ Reply | More ]

NYC mom here. Rahm has the big money interests behind him and he is making them very very happy. So while the public may grumble, you don't have the constant negative press and advertising but instead the people in power make sure lots of nice things are written. It's interesting that it is just the opposite. In NYC crime is down. We have a very popular universal pre-k program thanks to de Blasio. The speed limit is reduced citywide which makes me happy as a parent. Public schools are better than they were. When you look at what is happening in other cities, and how much better NYC is, you'd think de Blasio would be popular. But he gets a constant drum beat of negative press. The people in power don't like him because he won't do their bidding. So he could be out before Rahm and it's pretty sad. And will likely be replaced by someone much more like Rahm. [ Reply | More ]

or: yeah, it's frustrating because as a NYC resident I think the Mayor has done a pretty credible job. He has made some mistakes and isn't perfect, but his mistakes are small and his successes in just a few years are pretty great. He has done arguably as much good, if not far more, than any "popular" Mayors in their first term. But the big money interests despise him and it has been a constant negative drumbeat from the first day of his election. If anything, the fact that very corrupt Andrew Cuomo despises de Blasio should tell you he is much better than the media pretends. Cuomo is far more like Rahm and his interests are in pleasing the folks with money. And pursuing his own ambitions, which they both believe means to sell out the most vulnerable citizens in order to seem "willing to work with Republicans" when it is really about pleasing the big money donors. I dont have a tool per se, but start with savings. Save enough to max your 401k each month. Take off state, federal, local taxes each month. Unless you plan on moving, take off your housing. Estimate your bills (insurance, utilities, etc). Give yourself a food allowance which a reasonable pad for takeout/restaurants. Estimate annual spending on birthays/christmas/clothing. Whats left? Anything? Do you have a few months in emergency savings? Kids college? Start there. Anything left? Allocate a small amount for a vacation each year [ Reply | More ]

Not OP, but you still have to live. You can do barebones all you want but Christmas will still happen. Your kids birthday rolls around each year. You are going to order a pizza every once in a while. I think moderation is the key here. What you usually find is that you are paying way too much for your housing. That you are living like you make 700k when you make 300 k and that you cant go to the Caribbean AND skiing and rent a summer house every single year [ Reply | More ]
