[ - ] I'm really distraught right now. DD (9) had a sleepover with her cousin (6). Last night, my brother's girlfriend (who was in charge of the girls) called me and told me that they were caught playing extreme truth or dare on dd's ipod. I was not aware that she had this on her device. GF talked to them about appropriate/inappropriate behavior, and then caught them doing the same thing later in the day. When we talked to dd she said that they were hugging and pretending to kiss under the covers. I am extremely disappointed with dd, also upset that the gf wasn't monitoring them closer after the first incident, and I am just really upset and embarrassed overall. I know I am reacting in the wrong way (with anger and disgust), but I don't know what to do...and I don't know how we can ever face them again. A similar situation happened like two years ago with these two, and I am not aware of it happening with anyone else. We have an appointment with a counselor on Thursday, but I need advice in the meantime. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

That's a really big age difference. If they were the same age it would be different. I am not familiar with extreme truth or dare but I think you need to keep the ipod and just let her have music on a ipod shuffle or other non-app enabled device. As for the other you are right to go to a counselor and I think you need to do an appointment with your pediatrician first. The age difference makes the behavior very disturbing and you need to really limit what your dd does without direct supervision by you. If your dd where a ds, this would already be considered sexual predator behavior. I think you need an appointment with medical exam to see if your dd has been molested. I'm sorry. [ Reply | More ]

No, I don't think you can do it with the kid in your arms. How old is she? I didn't start using the g-luxe till my son was 11 months. So I was able to set him down, collapse it, and then pick him up to walk down the stairs. Stroller on the bus was never easy. Stroller on subway was way better. [ - ] So my 14 yo went away to a girls leadership program at a university. We reviewed the agenda in advance and the schedule etc. When we went to pick her up we notice she had a MASSIVE hickey on her neck. Apparently, on the last night when most of the girls went off campus as a group witha chaperone a small group stayed behind with no chaperone and they went to a party with other campers...where she met some 15 yo boy, whose name she did not know and made out with him. Now - she has never had a boyfriend and I know is curious. This is a good girl and she broke down hysterically crying and said that everyone knows what its like to make out except her and she just wanted to try it. So here is the question. Is the camp to blame for leaving her behind without supervision? Is what she did something I need to be deeply worried about? How would you handle this? 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

NP If you send her to stuff like this then you are risking that the chaperones idea of chaperoning may be very different than your own. I have a ds and it would be really hard for me to send him to something like this. I lived in another country and had a lot of freedom and my friends and I were really up to no good. It was a very safe place to be very stupid and my kids are not that lucky. I would probably only let ds go to one of those things if I made him SWEAR to stay with the official chaperones at all times. Dh and I already have stricter rules than most places so he is used to that. [ Reply | More ]

""life is too short to not enjoy this time with your family" is just really painful" What has to be painful isn't that somebody else isn't suffering, but the fact that US labor market regulations are such that allows workers to be penalized for taking their vacation time, which rhymes with what OP is saying. You shouldn't aim at the few MC families who can. You should take direct aim at USA anti-mother and anti-family labor market. For God sakes, USA doesn't even have Paid Maternity Leave yet, like only Swaziland and Papua Guinea. THAT is where the pain should be directed towards. Not towards those of us who understood before having kids "if USA wanted mothers to work, USA would have given them Paid Maternity Leave" at the very least. Let's not even get into the issue of driving wives out of the labor force by imposing on their 1st dollar their DH's marginal tax rate (teh top rate) in 1948. Women in USA are so obedient that they haven't even demanded this anti-working wife tax ruling to be reversed. [ Reply | More ]

Of course some people have the choice and that's great. Saying "I can't imagine not spending all summer with my family in France because of something like WORK" is out of touch and pretty cruelly passive aggressive. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Where would a very bright, very well spoken and mature girl who is involved in a lot of leadership roles in socially minded organizations in and out of school, very accomplished musically, wins writing awards and is published but has the following grades at a good private not in NYC: B+ (Eng), B+ (Hist), B+ (Bio), B- (Math-Geo), A- (Language) and all A's in other secondary classes like Ethics, Debate, Theater etc etc....These are Freshman end of year grades. I am just thinking - if this is roughly where she will be at...what are her prospects for types of colleges? I am assuming schools like Georgetown are out - but what about BU, Barnard, etc? Thoughts, feedback? Thank you! 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Then have a honest talk with her. Tell her it is a big sacrifice to send her to private. But that's only if she steps up and work hard and get A's. In all honest though, I really would not stretch financially to send a B student to private. If you have access to a good public, she will be fine! Perhaps even happier if she feels that she is not one of the poors any, ore. [ Reply | More ]

It's too soon to tell, but assuming her grades stay the same, it's so specific to the school. Try to figure out where she is in the class and then look at where those types of kids go - if she is that accomplished musically / in writing maybe this gets her into a slightly better school. She's gross. She is America's version of Princess Beatrice of the UK, who is despised over there. She was lucky to be born into a certain family and has been given all sorts of prestigious jobs through her parents' connections, but has quit them all and done nothing of note with her life. Chelsea bought a $10.5 million condo before she was 33. How did that happen? Her husband is not that rich and she's the daughter of public servants. LOL Her FIL is a former politician who served 5 years in prison for bank fraud, wire fraud, etc. Her DH's hedge fund lost 90% of its value. She tried to care about money but couldn't. She's a modern day Marie Antoinette. Let them eat cake! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] NYC public elementary parents: On the report card, there is an overall grade for ELA, Math, Social Studies, etc., then several sub-headings. ELA has sub headings of Reading, Writing, and one more. Then each of those has several sub categories. Would you say that the top top heading is the one that matters? My son got a 4 in ELA, but had a 3 in Reading (4s in the other two categories).
