[ - ] I am convinced that all those years of wearing spanx caused the reflux I have today. All that squeezing and pressure. Anyone out there with a similar experience? I stopped with the spanx a long time ago but I think I permanently damaged my lower esophageal sphincter. I'm otherwise in very good health and feel great, not overweight, but even with good diet, elevated head of bed, occasional PPI, etc, I can't completely shake the reflux. Would appreciate any advice or positive stories! 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

None of pressure cooker High schools start as pressure cooker early on. In fact, the most rigorous high schools, both private and public like Hunter, take it very slow and easy throughout lower/elementary and most parts of middle school years. Don't worry. It's funny how different women in both families are. With Trump relating to Ivanka's rack and groping her on stage all the time, it's definitely hard to imagine how Bill, a much more eligible bachelor in his days than loser Trump, who couldn't even get into any good schools besides terrible Fordham until he transferred to UPenn later on, admitted that he had to propose 3 times to Hillary, while Trump married 3 different loser wives. Trump is a loser. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Spin off of MP post about SAHD. Why didn't you do your research before marrying your DHs? When I met DH in college, we discussed family plans before getting engaged. He was a latch key kid and was firm about wanting our kids to have a mom around. My mom was a wonderful SAHM who was always there for me so I felt the same way. He comes from a traditional background where men are expected to provide for the family. I buy what I want, do what I want and am respected for all that I do for the family. Is this concept gone these days? I work part time for fun now that the kids are older. It happens to be lucrative but even if it weren't, I would still do it for fun. Now, women are expected. To be the breadwinner and do everything?! I'd rather be single. Why do you live this way? 123 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You are naive if you think a man is the same at 40 or 45 that he is in his 20s. You can have lots of pictures and expectations of what your life will be like based on what you see and want when you are young. Life happens to you. You don't do research when you're getting married on what happens if you have a child with severe special needs, if one of you gets sick, if your "career" doesn't pan out exactly as you believe it will or if you always thought you wanted to be a mom but figure out only after you have them that you aren't all that good at it after all. You're not listening to what I'm saying. We had lots of plans and married in our 30s. Think you'd know where we were going by then, right? My husband went to Yale. When we married, he was a financial analyst. I was a VP with my company. We were going to have one child and a nanny. Our son was born 7 years ago. When he was 3, he was diagnosed with autism. By age 4 we knew he would not be able to attend "regular school" and we found a program for him. Right around then was when my DH lost his job and was unable to find a new one for nearly 2 years, until he completely switched industries. Now he is a HR resources manager in a medical office, which was fantastic, and he started to earn enough for me to stay home last year, because we felt strongly that one of us should be giving more time to our son while he was still young. One year into this arrangement, DH was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He's in chemotherapy now, trying to stay at work as much as possible, and I have had to go back to work because who knows how our lives will turn out now, right? Please do not be smug about "people who have a strong view about the man providing work hard blah blah blah." You are lucky. Don't pat yourself on the back, you don't walk in everyone else's shoes. Have a nice day. [ Reply | More ]

That's not a bad choice. Presumably he is scrambling to find something else to support the dream you both have. If that doesn't happen, of course you adjust, but the point is you agree on the ideal and he is trying to support that. [ Reply | More ]

You're making a lot of assumptions that don't pan out the way people planned. I'm a lawyer married to a lawyer so never really thought I wouldn't work. However, many of the situations posted about here (including the MP) are guys who were probably motivated and maybe even appeared Alpha from college until being let go from a finance job at 41 and never recovering. Their ego takes such a massive hit that they can't function. First, they think they will get another job in thr industry so can't take something too far below where they were or it will permanently reset their potential then suddenly it's been 3 years and they are mid-40s and no longer even in the running for the jobs that were beneath them not long ago. It works out for a lucky few just as planned and that's what keeps the rest of them thinking it will for them too. [ Reply | More ]

Finance is particularly brutal. Going from king of mountain to kicked off the mountain. But many doctors, lawyers, engineers and so on have a more steady paycheck and can support a SAHP. [ Reply | More ]

^I don't know the industry but from what I understand at this point he does not have much to offer beyond someone 15 years younger so why would they even choose him as he is older with less energy and drive. It is also a major hit to the ego to go back down the ladder and have a boss younger than you. [ Reply | More ]

I think there are a few key pieces to making a traditional marriage work: a) the dh has to actually like his job, b) the dw really can't ask him to help out at home beyond spending time with the family, and c) there needs to be enough money. Otherwise, resentment is inevitable. [ Reply | More ]

This was absolutely true in the 50s when a man couldn't imagine an alternative, but in today's world, a man who gets up every morning and slogs off to a miserable job is going to start to wonder if the grass isn't greener on the other side and he wouldn't be better off if either a) his wife took the miserable job and he stayed home or b) they each took lesser paying but more fulfilling jobs and shared some of the domestic responsibilities. The outcome of feminism is men don't just take it like a man anymore. [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand why it's OK to expect the DH to be the breadwinner and unacceptable the moment the DW has to take on that mantle. The pressures are the same, and it's not anyone's role to be one or the other. Of course, a couple should figure these things out before getting married. I had two serious relationships in my 20s that failed because of disagreements related to this topic. It was awful but when I see the life they built for themselves, if that's what they wanted, they would have been miserable with me (and vice-versa). The only way I can see it mattering that the DW is the breadwinner is if the DH doesn't pick up the slack so that the DW has to take on ALL roles. That's not fair. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the two guys wanted a SAHW. They didn't come out and say it, but they grew up with one, thought that this was the best set up for children, and had a general attitude of "I want my wife to be well-educated and well-employed, until we have children." Not in an arsy way, but in a way that was informed with how much they respected the work their own mothers did. That wasn't me. [ Reply | More ]

I'd rather be a single mom. I could not be married to a deadbeat. Even if I had to make tremendous sacrifices, it's honest work with freedom from dead weight. [ - ] I am surprised at the venom directed against sharing drinks with children. It is perfectly ok to spen $7 on one drink, but it's a complete waste to spend $35 on one trip to Starbucks. Taking the coffee milk is another story, but sharing a large drink with children is smart. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
