probably more suburban than city just based on how many people live in the burbs vs cities. but each school has a slightly different vibe . At my boarding school it was more suburban but good international representation too [ Reply | More ]

nah, I think you come from a family who either believes in boarding school or not. I know many kids in the city go because their school- like st. Bernard's end and the majority go on to boarding. from teaching at a tt in Manhattan I think a lot more go to boarding than families I know living in the suburbs (only two). when I think of the kids I taught in the city I can think of name after name who were sent away to bs. Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Andover, exeter-- all the ones you would think. [ Reply | More ]

vikings didn't have the honor. i felt it was too pulp and gratuitous. with sean beans character, i felt the moral obligation behind the decision to execute a deserter. it brought into focus how high the stakes are in that world. It's a glimpse into a dark ages way of life, with events as horrific as history. It's interesting to see hiw cutthroat humans in power can be. some of the violence and sex was gratuitous, sure, but it's probably more realistic than Robin Hood. [ Reply | More ]

I was never clear on the extent of his online life though... it is tricky to try and press a man on these things, which can sometimes be simple private pleasures, but sometimes indicate more of a skanky cheater. I was extremely jealous of some people I knew who had theirs. They had only girls like I did, they went for another and each one got a boy. [ Reply | More ]

The farther apart in age, the more difficult it is to do things together as a family. One person is likely to split off with the two older kids, and one with the baby. Just a thought- been there (hanging with the youngest while my DH and two older kids go do fun things). [ Reply | More ]

Funny you write this. I am home with my 5 year old this break while DH is off with my older two (12 & 10). The two older ones requested a guys trip without 5 year old. It's getting a lot better re: travel though. In April we are all going on a big fam vacation. [ Reply | More ]

It's much better now, but honestly, I feel like DH and I almost got divorced as a result of the third. He just lacks patience with our youngest who in my estimation has also been the most difficult. Way more active, doesn't listen as well, strong willed. So for a while there was fighting. Now that he's a bit older - will be 6 in April things are calmer. Ideally I would have had a smaller gap bet kids but I had my life back, we put it off but then it was either we have a third or I'm too old, and ironically it was DH who wanted the third. I don't regret it it's simply a lot of work and patience. My older ones are great with him though if that makes a difference. They are very loving and will play/ read with him. [ Reply | More ]

np- the sleep isn't a big deal. that's temporary. you can get through anything for a number of months or a year. it's the SN that would scare me, but a small chance this will happen. [ Reply | More ]

It is totally in NYC- all my friends are having 3. But honestly they can’t do much as a family- even with help. Date nights and traveling are out. I think it can become claustrophobic at that point esp in NYC. One nanny isn’t enough. Of course it depends on the kids temperaments, but it’s a bit much [ Reply | More ]

I posted earlier today that I “might” regret not having 3. But then I think about the fact that we are leaving the country for vacation this week (DCs are 3 and 5) or can send them to my in laws a that we can travel alone , and I’m not willing to give that up. Our kids are difficult, esp our boy, so anymore and it will become miserable. [ Reply | More ]

I could have one more- I’m 38 with a 2.5 and 5 year old— but that window is closing and I’m kind of intentionally letting it close. We just finally sold the crib, high chair, and stroller rumble seat and it felt great! I want to travel the world with my kids. They’ve already been to 4 countries and I can’t imagine doing those trips with 3. [ Reply | More ]

I'll tell you how they do it. I came from a small family and have no relationship with my brother- lots of issues. I wanted a bigger family with lots of action and chaos and fun. I also knew that with one I'd put everything into that one kid and that worried me for the kid's sake-and god forbid anything happen to that one child. So we have three, and while I can't do yoga or read as often as I like they are all in school and for 8 hours I have nothing much going on (I need a job) so as it turns out I do workout or play tennis just about every day. For sure it's a grind some days, but a wonderful kind of grind. [ Reply | More ]

We were wavering and then just went for it. DC isn't here yet and while we're excited and ready, I'm also dreading the baby phase. I get PPD and find the newborn period to be beyond hard. But looking forward to having three girls. [ Reply | More ]

My co-worker did this when she was in 2nd grade: she asked the bully to shake hands to make up. When they shook, she twisted elbows slightly so the girl would know she meant business. Never bullied her again. [ Reply | More ]

I'm typically a peace-loving mom, but the only way to make a bully stop is to stand up to them. Role play with him how to stand his ground (hopefully without physical violence) and exit with head up. [ Reply | More ]

Tough one. Who is this person- a close friend that he's just having a spat with? A known antagonist? You don't want bullies to see that they've ruffled your feathers. I think your advice is good. If he doesn't feel comfortable grabbing it back (best option in my opinion, if he's sure he can get it back), then I think saying something like "Wow, it really makes you feel cool to take other people's things- good luck with that" as nonchalantly as possible, then exit (get scooter later). And definitely avoid this person from here on out. [ Reply | More ]

OP: It was a kid in his class who was playing with 2 other kids that ds doesn't know, and these other 2 were really mean. They all wanted a turn to ride and were trying to get ds off so they could. And then they wouldn't give it back until they got bored and all rode away. I saw all this from the window but I didn't want to go outside and get involved. DS is going to avoid these kids from now on but I think he generally needs to be more assertive and stand up for himself more...but if words don't work, I don't know what else to tell him. He's not the kind of kid that's going to punch someone (not that that's the answer anyway). [ Reply | More ]

Yep, if it's a one-off encounter, then it's a great learning experience. Avoid them. A little more challenging if he will encounter them every day. Sounds like you handled it well- role plays are always good. . [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. It's always helpful to hear how other parents would handle it. We are new in town so ds doesn't have a strong friend group yet, and we're still getting to know people. Obviously we now know who to avoid! [ Reply | More ]

Also, 10 year boys are uncommonly shitty to each other. My DS (now grown-up) recently told me that one of his "good" friends stole his lunch every day in 5th grade. This person is now a kind and successful public interest lawyer. There is hope! [ Reply | More ]

Awww that is awful! I thought they'd be decent until middle school at least. I grew up with only sisters. I know girls are mean and I can prepare my younger dd to deal with that, but I thought boys would be different! Wishful thinking I guess. [ Reply | More ]
