[ - ] Can anyone share a story about their DB not talking till after they turned two and still was very bright in school. Our first DB is super smart and in the G&T program (age 5) and our 2 year old is still struggling to talk. He understands a lot and tries to be funny and cute, but no words that we understand outside of More, Ball and Bye. It makes me worried and sad. Please if anyone has a great story of their DB suddenly talking and being brilliant I so need to hear it now. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Early talkers doesn't necessarily mean brilliant child. My 2 yo struggled to talk too, now he's 7.5, in g/t, very conscientious about homework and works hard at it, socially considerate and aware, yanks my chain when he can, and can't shut up. Your child is 2 and knows he has a lot to work on - maybe he is too busy thinking. One day you will be sitting there wondering when he will shut up too. [ Reply | More ]

Probably. When I was growing up, we were taught that nothing/no one is ever perfect and everyone has obstacles to overcome. Now, every little quirk and character trait is held under a microscope and labeled with a diagnosis. It's ridiculous. [ Reply | More ]

No, problematic marriage, but I have the two kids I wanted. I think the issue for me was lack of guidance. I was/am with the wrong person, waited too long to get married and have kids. Took such a long time to realize this all could have happened much sooner and happily with someone who was on the same page. Whereas I have two great kids cuz I give them the attention and discipline of 2 parents, my dh is still not ready to step into any role of responsibility. So my marriage is at tethers. I don't blame dh too much, I blame my own short-sightedness just as much. Perhaps that is why I willingly shoulder the responsibilities, but I'm starting to think about terminating the enabling of my deadbeat spouse. [ Reply | More ]

Years ago before my first dd was born, when we were looking for a pediatrician, we met with Dr. Cohen. The office was beautiful, and brand new -- or nearly so -- at the time, but I couldn't stand the man. He was so smug and condescending -- dh and I walked out of there, turned to each other and simultaneously said something along the lines of "oh, hell no!" Over the years, all of the stories I heard from other parents whose dc used the practice only reinforced that impression. He seems like an egomaniac. [ Reply | More ]

I heard a TED talk given by a woman who talked about visiting several orphanages in Russia. When she visited the newborn wing she was surprised at how quiet it was and the nurse took it as a compliment that none of the babies were crying but in fact they cry for a day or two but after realizing that crying is not going to get their needs met, they don't cry anymore. Just stare up into space. Extreme example but that's what I think about when I hear cio at 8 wks. Sure, it would work but really?? Seems so young. I "sleep trained" at 6 months fwiw. [ Reply | More ]

Really? In my doctor's office I can hear the conversation down the hall better than the person in front of me. Dx with CAPD in college. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, he does. Seriously, please do the world a service and seek professional help, or at least just shut the fuck up. Your incessant trolling and attempts to provoke people here verge on pathological. I can only imagine what you're like with the people who have to deal with you face to face. [ Reply | More ]

Pediatric OT in NYC here. I completely agree Sensory Integration is not even recognized by the AMA but for some reason people load the BS diagnosis everywhere. [ Reply | More ]

And homosexuality used to be in the DSM. And in some cultures people who hear voices and think they're possessed get to be shamans, while here we diagnose them as schizophrenic and medicate them. You're a pretty shitty health care provider if it hasn't crossed your mind that what constitutes a disorder is subject to change and varies depending on context. SID will end up in the DSM within the next 2 updates. [ Reply | More ]

I think what you're saying is you're tired of these labels that essentially make kids "special," and "special" becomes "entitled." I have 2 kids with special needs and I am frankly appalled by the entitlement of some parents - and it does nothing to help the kids maximize their independence, sense of agency and sense of self. We all have problems and baggage - families with special needs kids don't have the right to stay in the restaurant if the kid is loud and inappropriate (does an inebriated adult get thrown out?! Hellz ya! So would a kid who barfed!). We don't have a right to hold up the airplane (remember that story?), cut you in line, and, oh yeah, be "more important" than any other kid. The world does not owe SN families. Sorry. [ Reply | More ]

Either your kids don't have severe SN so you are talking out of your ass or else you're a shitty mother. My autistic DS will ALWAYS be my #1 priority because I know damn well no one else will fight for him if I wont. Oh and he will be out in public and whoever feels 'disrupted' can suck it.
