People don't pay money to go to zoos to see little Mexican kids. Therefore the kid should have been the one shot (or preferably, the mom). 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

San Diego isn't a sprawl. The beach cities are limited by the ocean. The rest of it is geographically limited by mainly vertical roads along the foothills. If you live more than a few miles inland the weather is much hotter; so nobody wants to live there. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for answering. It kind of depressed me a little. Follow-up question: what kind of limit do you put on that kind of thing on a school night with no friends around? Her friends usually come home on Fridays, so I don't worry about the homework aspect. I have never limited screen time for any of my children, even when it was the 90s they were allowed to play video games and game boy things. I haven't seen it really affect them one way or the other. They all still had healthy amounts of sports and other activities. Screens are here to stay, you need them work or play. Anyway, I don't worry about the 12 year old. She watches makeup how-to videos (even though she doesn't wear makeup), some of those family vloggers, funny cat videos, video vines. They sit in the living room and laugh just like when I was that age and sitting around with my friends listening to someone's new record album in the 80s. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I should add - all the 12 year old's homework is online now anyway. She has to log in to do her math problem sets or print off any homework meant to be turned in on paper. I once had a little kid over for a playdate. He was always a handful-he'd shimmy up my pantry shelves to get to the top where I kept sweets etc. One day I had them outside learning to fly kites. I turned my back literally one second and he said--oh it's on the roof, I'll get it and he scrambled up the side of my house and was on the roof with the kite! I was petrified but he shimmied himself down again. He was 5 years old. His mom was a nervous wreck until he finally settled down around age 10. [ Reply | More ]

I hate the sue-happy atmosphere in this country, but it seems like a no brainer that a normal 4 year old shouldn't have been able to climb into the enclosure to the point where they could reach the animals. At the Boston zoo a gorilla escaped about a dozen years ago. That gorilla should not have been able to get out, and that boy should not have been able to get in. Shit happens and then they identify weaknesses and learn that just because it hasn't happened before, doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Sometimes someone has to take a piece of a bat to the head before they beef up spectator safety. [ Reply | More ]
