I was compelled to reset my long-forgotten password to UB in order to log in an reply to this post. The OP is NOT fake. I live in a wealthy NJ town, and our close friends did this on a recent trip to Disney. So it is not an urban myth. They hired a disabled stranger who was "Uncle Charlie" for the day and got them to the front of every line. This family received the contact info for this person from another family in town who had also hired him on their trip. The guys name is in circulation among those in the "know," but I think he was originally found via Craigslist. And there are several disabled people who offer their services, so this is not a unique guy. I feel like a bad mom because I am trying to get her to stop and today I just got so frustrated because it was an obsession. I really feel that it is starting to interfere in daily life. I know that sounds crazy but she'll try and do things one-handed because she needs her thumb. She tries building towers with only one hand, it'll fall over, and she'll flip out. I try to get her to do it with two hands and she won't. I don't remember for sure. I do remember my older brothers trying to get me to stop, telling me I would need braces(( would just laugh). And people asking me what it tasted like. I think at a certain point, maybe 3 or so my mom told me I could only suck my thumb at night time. I don't know what she did to enforce that though. And the only thing that got me to stop at night was the presence of a full mouth retainer that I had to wear overnight. It was just extremely soothing to me. [ Reply | More

Stop her now. Find a way. I say this from 100% personal experience. I STILL suck my thumb and I'm over 40! I'm telling you it's an intense habit. I didn't even care that my boyfriend (who is now my DH) knew after only like 2 months of being together. I had to fess up because I just couldn't stop and do it in my sleep every single night without fail. It can be better than sex, chocolate or anything else you can think of. A total crazy addiction. It's the most comforting thing in the universe and I probably will never give it up now but that's why I say stop her asap. I wished my mom was more vigliant about it but she let it go after trying gloves, vaseline on thumbs etc. I love and I will not give it up for anything. It has also made my teeth and bite pretty messed up. I mean they don't look terrible but my teeth would have been so much nicer and I think my jaw is all messed up from it too (TMJ). You are causing more anxiety for her by making her stop. Thus making her want to suck more. She will outgrow it but as long as you give it so much attention it will only get worse.
