[ - ] Recently read this quotes, “Let what you love, be what you do,” and “Whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes you happy.” For years I have been thinking of quitting a job in marketing (which I hate), and make a career out of what I love (cooking and baking). Each time I give it a second thought- I tell myself that I am being unrealistic, self-centered, immature, and childish, to really consider it. I would put my family at financial risk, but if I can make a career of it- my life would be so much more fulfilling. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

This is a false decision. It would indeed be foolish to quit before even starting to do anything to get the baking thing going. Start exploring with small steps while you are in your current job. Build it up. THEN quit. [ Reply | More ]

My parents told me the opposite. Get a job to make enough money to do what you love and not care if you have to make money at it, or not. Even if you love to work on your car in the garage on weekends, it doesn't mean you should be a mechanic. [ Reply | More ]

I have mixed feelings about making a career out of a hobby. I love making art, I recently pursued an artistic medium that could make me some money and have done freelance work for free because I love it. Everyone I know that has some financial success as an artist has to churn out the one themey thing that took off even if they progress in their art. I've seen it with my cousin who is an industrial designer (he has a hit line of lights) and musicians (everyone wants the same type of music over and over that made them successful). I'm kind of happy that my job isn't focused on art, but fits more my personality and skill level - I work in educational administration. [ Reply | More ]

Don’t push reading on kids. Ritualize daily reading time. Talk about books and let the child decide what to talk about and be open-ended. Get parents involved in reading too. I'm sorry, but this is par for the course. I have had 5 au pairs, and each time I told myself that this one would be different, but were all the same - basically entitled teenage girls who come here wanting to see the US and have fun, but do the bare minimum when it comes to work. It's unfortunate, because I think the program in theory sounds like a great idea, but I have never had a good experience with them. They don't do housework - even picking up after themselves - and expect you to mother them. Plus, they don't really care that much about your house and keeping it tidy. [ Reply | More ]

Not a nanny, just a WOHM who has has a terrible experience with 4 of my 5 au pairs. And I also have a ft nanny, so the responsibilities of our au pairs were minimal to begin with, and they all underperformed. You probably just have low standards for childcare and housekeeping. [ Reply | More ]

I am a biglaw partner with 3 DCs. The au pairs basically just shuttled the kids back and forth to school and activities, and did some weekend babysitting. FT nanny constantly complained about the mess au pairs made - they never picked up after themselves or the kids, and would just leave the mess assuming nanny would pick it up. So now the nanny does everything and gets it done without an aupair, and our house is much more peaceful. [ Reply | More ]

Also explain no food or dishes in her room and to hang up her clothes and towels. You are not running s youth hostel and expect her to adhere to the rules of the family while living with you. You au pair sounds like she enjoys the night life a bit too much. Once she realizes that she needs to be up at 6 to report for duty at 7, she may shorten her nights out. [ - ] I adore that name thread - nothing like a bunch of self-important clueless snobs (for no reason whatsoever) casting aspersions and levying judgment on something they know nothing about. "The people who name their DC this are poor and ignorant". "Henry is a striver name" (my personal fav). Good thing you people rarely interact with the normal 99.9% of this country or you'd be forced to realize how parochial and socially tone-dead you really are. And no,hon....hubby's 6 figure hedge job hasn't rendered you a doyenne of society equipped to make these judgments from your lofty perch of superiority. Do yourself a favor and keep it to UB - say this nonsense in public and you'll get snickered at (politely,of course.) 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm same weight and a tiny bit taller and have a lbd that makes me feel like Gisele. Look for sleek lines, not a lot of poofiness, classic cut. Put on some pearls and heels and you're ready to knock them dead! [ Reply | More ]

There are people on here who think they are "fat" at 5'5" and 110 pounds. It's just ridiculous. Don't listen to these people! Find a dress that makes you happy. You will look good. (I suspect that the size two people on here are also the ones who have $4 million to spend on a house - I think that a lot of them are fake.) [ Reply | More ]

That's because we're in the midst of an obesity crisis and subsequent fat acceptance. Before 1980, real women were much slimmer. Hell, go to a vintage store and try to squeeze into those dresses. Just because most people are fatter now, doesn't make it right. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] my 18 year nephew (senior) has always been a bit unusual. He has no EQ, spends most of his time in his room playing video games. Goes to his car (they live in CA) to eat his lunch. He has NO FRIENDS. He was able to become an eagle scout recently as (I'm not kidding) his mom did 80% of the detail and work. He had to push "send" on a few emails and show up for the manual construction for a weekend. His dad drove the boy scout/eagle scout bus for the last 10 years. My nephew went along with it. Anyway, there are many indications that he has asbergers : he has an odd way of speaking (when he rolled down his window to ask a woman if she was pulling out of a parking space, he said in a deep, 50 year old man voice "excuse me, ma'am might you be leaving your space?". He will not look anyone in the eyes and keeps his head down. He has VERY awkward bursts of anger, where his parents leave the room to either deal with it or not engage. He will become very violent with his older brother, who mostly ignores and avoids him. My point is: he is obviously very off, sometimes in a frightening way. He scares me. His dad, my brother has never brought up the asperbers thing. How do I address it? Is it my place? The mom is a trained psychologist, as well.He feels like a Columbiner. He has anger in his eyes. PS: his brother is very normal, popular etc. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

^^Just adding: You don't have to go into (and I would't recommend saying) that you've always considered him weird. His history isn't the issue here. Just say what you see *now* (that he seems unhappy and angry) and that you think a young man his age might benefit from someone outside the family for advice. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds to me like he has aspergers. Maybe give him a few books so he can read about it himself. Also suggest the parents meet with the school psychologist. There are a lot of conferences and support for parents and caregivers. Google AHANY. They have a fall conference at Adelphi U. Call or meet with the director, Pat Schissel. She is truly terrific and would have a lot of solid, reliable advice and recommendations. The other good resource is Dr. Lynda Geller, who runs the Aspergers Center for Training and Education. See this: http://www.aspergercenter.com/aboutus.html If your nephew's parents are in denial, this is what I would do if it were my nephew. And it's spelled AsPergers Syndrome. Have you talked with the mother directly about your observations and concern? Please don't ignore or say it's not my business. The kid needs professional help. You could also consult with the local rabbi, clergyman or social worker ... and go to a support group for parents. They will be a great resource. [ Reply | More ]

See if one of these groups is near by. Your nephew really needs help. If the parents don't see it, I hope you will take some action. [ Reply | More ]

My SIL is a bit like your nephew. Now in her mid-40s with a lot of emotional problems. My DH's uncle recently said that he always thought she was a bit off and that he and his wife used to discuss it but they never said anything. He now wishes that he brought it up with his (now deceased) brother, my DH's and SIL's father. It might not have done any good but it might have made it harder for them to deny there was a problem. Tread lightly but raise your concerns. [ Reply | More ]

He has no intention of getting to the White House, this whole ridiculous stunt is about his next reality show. He confirmed it the other day by nailing down his exit plan - he signed the agreement with the RNC not to run as a third party candidate. He knows he can't get the nomination, and voilà, he's off the hook through no fault of his own. This was his plan all along and he played the mouth-breathers all across the country like a fiddle. Or a banjo, actually. [ Reply | More ]
