What is the situation with young families and schools in Williamsburg? Are there charters? Neighborhood schools? Anyone BTDT? There are ton of kids in Wburg. I had my DS there, but moved when he was 2 to another neighborhood in Brooklyn. There's a school consultant lady who specializes in Brooklyn. Do a call or a meet up with her and she'll give you the full low down. I think there's an ok elementary in Wburg. There's a fantastic one in Greenpoint. But I'd talk to the consultant lady before you buy. [ Reply | More ]

You can keep it. You can give 2/3 away. You can give any portion away. You can contact these biological children and see whether you like them well enough to hand each of them $83K. I'd imagine they'd be appreciative of anything, though anything less than 1/3 might inflame old wounds. Or just you being a reminder of their father's choice could make them hate you as his representative. Or they might welcome you into their loving family, regardless of the money thing. I think this is one of those things where you get to help make the reality happen, though you are also dealing with long-buried wounds that might not make for happy reunions. [ Reply | More ]

I was a broker for years and getting a discount depends largely on the apartment, in you are renting. If you are selling, most brokers will go down to 5% or so, but that discount is reflected in the system all brokers use. And yes, there are shadey brokers who won't show listings if the fee is reduced. Have you seen StreetEasy.com? That's a great place to find legit rentals and sales. It's the tool brokers use with a different interface. [ Reply | More ]

He would often not call on birthdays, years he never came around. I am going through the same thing right now. My mother is an aged drug addict, just in the ICU last week for another methadone overdose. She is angry if i do call because she says I am enjoying my youth and reveling in how low she has fallen, and she is angry if I don't call. As far as I know she is leaving everything to my siblings (shockingly enough she has an estate of about 2 million). Nothing to me. But at this point I just have to tell myself that my siblings have earned it, they've been catering to her and calling 911 and listening to her rants for years. I was the only one who made the decision about ten years ago after my kids witnessed one of her other overdoses that I wouldn't expose my children to the madness anymore. But I know she's very sick and in a hotel right now (she self-discharged again when the hospital wouldn't give her her horse's dose of meds) and I've got her current cell number right here. I know posters said below that it should make me feel better to do the right thing by her, but I'm not sure. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Truth, sometimes men can deal with easier. My brother…doesn't seem to bother him as much. He has no kids, etc. Women feel things more. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks. You are right. That is what I am leaning toward. His delusions are what drive me crazy. When I told my husband "he bought us our car", my DH just said…astounding. [ Reply | More ]

OP: The wife told my brother in the hospital hall…"we are making a will, and I know what his wishes are." I just want to scream in the woman's face…do you know what or who you are married to but my brother said, just makes this sh*tshow worse and he's right. [ Reply | More ]

You have such bitterness toward him already that it doesn't really matter. A visit is not going to change things. Do what you want to do. [ Reply | More ]

I visited long distance multiple times in a similar situation. Dad's girlfriend--who pitted us against him for years--inherited everything, including serious money that had come from his own mother, who died a year before him. I'm still glad I went and did the right thing. [ Reply | More ]

I was reading the other day that when Jim Morrison died, he left everything to his girlfriend, Pam. When she died of an overdose 3 years later, she had no will, or children, so Jim Morrison's entire fortune went to his girlfriend's parents. Jim Morrison's parents fought for the money but they lost. Was so surprised to read that. [ Reply | More ]
