[ - ] So, my 6-month-old, 6lb puppy has discovered how to get things on the coffee table. Just discovered her - she had knocked a plastic cup of water over on her head and was proceeding to run around the apartment with said cup in her mouth. While she was dripping wet. Good thing she's cute! 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

She said she is frightened of what mood he is going to be in when he comes home, he's a good dad when he's in the mood to be, she thinks he will 'calm down' if she gives him what he wants and until recently he would name call in front of her daughter. He doesn't do it in front of anybody else, funny that, they never do. There is nothing about a situation where a woman is frightened of her husbands mood on a daily basis that is okay. Nothing. You should not tread on eggshells in your own home. And he is not a good father on the back of that behavior. [ Reply | More ]

Take her to a ped opthamologist. I had this, dd too. In my day they said wait and see if you grow out of it- I didn't and ended up with surgeries and patching. My one sister and I have been excluded from mom & dad's affairs for years. We had our worries about mom (who is actually the sicker one) but dad was an attorney and we had no rights to manage anything about mom while dad was alive. When we got too close they closed ranks and shut us out. We didn't even know Dad was going in for this surgery until we got the call that it went very badly. Now we are untangling a huge mess because mom was completely in the dark about everything. I have received invaluable advice here in response to my many questions and vents. Thank you. [ - ] Just delivered a DS. Really happy except having an impossible time breastfeeding. He seems to get frustrated and only latches for a few minutes on one breast. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any suggestions for resources on how to do this properly? Feeling awful that I am giving him so much formula to offset my incompetence. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Ask the nurse for help with it. [ Reply | More ]

How old is he? Get a lactation consultant immediately if you want to bf. try pumping to maintain supply. Get help with how to syringe feed and even to use SNS. You want to work on your own supply while teaching baby how to nurse. [ Reply | More ]

+1. Many lactation consultant will come within 24 hours, if not the same day since feeding your baby is so critical. I would call one ASAP. [ Reply | More ]

Ask the nurse and/or ask for a lactation consultant to visit you. You may need a better hold so that DS can latch on. Mine liked the "football" hold when he was tiny and that's not one that most moms try unless someone shows them how. [ Reply | More ]

Yes my second liked football hold and also needed me to flatten the breast (midwife said to imagine squeezing a too big sandwich to fit in your mouth-- baby has a small mouth and not much jaw strength). [ Reply | More ]

Ask hospital for lactation consultant if still there--if not, call one in nyc. We got numbers from Real Birth. It was absolutely necessary and so helpful for me! Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Football hold and lots and lots of patience. And if you are giving formula, pump! [ Reply | More ]

While you're in the hospital, use the lactation consultants as much as possible. Seriously. It's hard to get a hold of one outside the hospital while your baby is screaming hungry. [ Reply | More ]

Remember your body is just starting to make milk. Baby probably frustrated because it's a lot of work for a slow trickle of collostrum. (My milk took 9 days to come in.) See LCs but just keep at it. Don't worry about formula intake. It won't hurt him. [ Reply | More ]

^and the fact that he's latching (even if just for a moment) is great. That is a stumbling block for many. [ Reply | More ]

Have his frenulum checked. My dd was "tongue tied" and couldn't latch until it was fixed, then she was a champ nurser for over a year. [ Reply | More ]

+1 Regarding the lactation consultant if you're still at the hospital. If you're at home, and can swing the cost (my insurance covered mine) have one come to your home for a more thorough. I was having a tough time getting him to latch and had to use nipple shields so he'd have some thing to grab on to. The LC who came to my house was a huge help. She spent more time with me and she identified his lip tie and tongue tie. We made an appt with the doctor to have it fixed (it takes less than a few minutes) and he was nursing with no problem at all. [ Reply | More ]

First of all, congratulations!!!! Secondly: Don't give up! DS would fall asleep as soon as he tried to latch on. Over and over the first few days. I was bound and determined to bf. This is what worked for us: I pumped and fed him my milk from a little plastic shot glass--he drank from the cup. I did this so he would not develop "nipple confusion," as bottle nipples can be much easier to get milk from and db needed to work hard to learn what to do. My early routine was to put him on the breast au naturel, then with a nipple shield on, then give him the cup. After about five days he was nursing exclusively with the nipple shield and we only used the shot glasses for letting me sleep through a feeding while DH fed DB with my expressed milk.. It took us three months to graduate from the nipple shield, but then nursing was much easier. For me it was worth all the hard work, I loved nursing DB. In the beginning, it was the hardest tthi g I've ever done and very time-consuming. Good luck to you and remember, there is no way to be a perfect mom, but a million different ways to be a great mom.
