Yeah, you can choose to have your son drop out of school and work to support the baby (which is probably what she'll have to do) or you can let him stay in school so he'll be able to support the kid on his own when he graduates and, for now, you can help the baby. [ Reply | More ]

CS will be ordered based ONLY on the teen father's income (earned and unearned). However, if father is voluntarily unemployed, court can impute income. I think they would be likely to impute based on part-time work while father in HS, but after HS, they may compute based on full time work. Then the choice is farther goes to college part-time or his parents pay (but it wont be much). [ Reply | More ]

That comes back to bite you so hard later, though. That baby turns into an adult fairly quickly and then you've got that baggage of an adult out there that you abandoned as a child. If I were the rich family I'd arrange for more child support in exchange for shared custody of the grandchild. When the mom accepts only the bare minimum the mom can hold onto the baby tooth and nail if she has it in her head to do so. [ Reply | More ]

I only know a situation with poor boy/poor girl. Once the baby was born they did the paternity test and she went for child support. He was court-ordered to find a job by a certain date (he wasn't working before that) and he pays $70 a week. If he did not find a job he would have been cumulatively fined 250 a month which would be garnished from whatever job wages he got whenever he started getting them. [ Reply | More ]

It was the car we liked most, and the difference of the $10-15k (vs less expensive makes) is a blip in our overall financial picture. We have very sizeable net worth--some of the growth is in part b/c of a decision to invest some money (after we sold one property) vs put it all in our house--moved from a more expensive city to a less expensive one. Many probably would have taken their proceeds and bought equally, we bought proportionally and came out far ahead. [ Reply | More ]

DH makes the money and it makes him happy - he doesn't ask for much, but it makes him feel good to drive a really nice car. Who am I to tell him that he only deserves some mid level sedan? He should have something that makes him happy. [ Reply | More ]

You sound incredibly stupid. You realize that property values vary greatly around the country. Car prices, however, do not. Just because some doesn't live in some overpriced shoebox in the sky doesn't doom them to driving Yugos. [ Reply | More ]

I paid cash for my 700k apartment and have a 68k car. Is that okay with you? I also have college in the bank for my dcs and a sizable family trust fund when I retire. Is that okay? I wear a $35 watch most days. [ Reply | More ]

The mentality is probably that they can swing the down payment for thr house and the monthly payments for the car but do not have capital for a bigger house. My guess would be that in the years it would take them to accumulate larger down payment, they would rather live in the smaller house and drive the nice car - especially if the drive/commute every day.
