[ - ] This is petty. I just saw a bachelorette party that was Disney princess themed. There apparently was a dress code for colors. There was an instagram hashtag (that didn't bother so much other than it was disney themed) The words "preggers" was on one of the matching shirts. The kicker to all this: the bride is 35 years old... 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm not sure. DH has siblings who are successful on the face of things - good degrees, not drug addicted, working for the most part (some go through periods of unemployment), but they take every single vacation with my in-laws, who pay for everything. They all fly together, stay in the same resorts, eat every meal together, do every activity together. In regular life they all live within 1 mile of each other (that's four houses altogether) and they all eat dinner together every night (either they go out and in-laws pay, or in-laws host). In-laws pay for tuition for all the kids to go to private school together. I married into this family from a pretty independent situation (divorced parents) and all this togetherness has always freaked me out. Is this 'failure to launch?' I don't know. I do know that when my MIL dies, all hell will break loose. [ Reply | More ]

They are. It's just the emotional dependence that seems so odd. I have known my in-laws for over 30 years and in all that time I couldn't name for you one friend either MIL or FIL have. Their friends are their adult children. Maybe it's my in-laws who have never launched. Who knows. [ Reply | More ]

I'm thinking Indian like the poster below. Even in a traditional Italian-American family who lives close by so Grandma can babysit, the adult dcs would want to vacation without their parents sometimes and I guarantee some of their spouses would have set boundaries about the nightly dinners. This reminds me of the famous Blair Hornstine saga. Her dad was so obsessed with having her succeed that he fucked her right out of her Harvard acceptance ... and now all these years later, she is ... working for her dad. Which she could have done going to any college and any law school in the first place. [ Reply | More ]

Her dad was a lawyer who sued the school district when it was proposed that she "share" the valedictorian title with another student because it was so close. It ended up generating so much controversy and publicity that she was ultimately outed as having plagiarized some portions of articles she'd done for local news publications ... and Harvard seized upon that to revoke her acceptance, though they probably just realized they had a real potential problem of a student/parent on their hands and they just wanted to get out of dealing with her later. Sometimes I think their parents might be so busy succeeding that they don't have the mental or emotional energy to interact with their kids normally, so the kids don't develop properly and end up with emotional or mental disorders. I was in lots of rehab and outpatient mental health things as a teenager and I met many "fucked up rich kids" as the popular stereotype is. And these people have really serious issues in many cases, but many people bitter about their own lives have no sympathy because they think the kids are "rich" [ Reply | More ]

My dh has two children from a previous marriage, both near 30 and neither have "launched" yet. Both college graduates, one had straight A's and was highly motivated, I think she just got out in the real world and completely imploded, has never had a job and just turned 30. Living off of her mother. I think they were given everything they wanted as children and were not expected to do anything in return as far as chores, charity work, jobs during the summer, etc. They had a good life and when they got out into the real work realized it was actually very hard and couldn't deal. Their mother was perfectly willing to continue to support them, so why work? It will never end as long as she does this sadly. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. We aren't in control of everything, at least having been poor it feels that way. I should have clarified I wasn't' raised poor, I was raised UMC, but my father died when I was young, so it slid to MC. The poor was as an adult with dh when we were young and starting out. We weren't homeless but we did get food stamps for a brief time and struggled for about 8 years badly. Fine now but the fear doesn't leave. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. I still have anxiety every time I donate money to something, even though it's my choice. It doesn't keep me from donating, but I've always got that postpartum feeling like I've given away part of my security, or now they'll have no more use for me now that they've got the check, is the check the only reason why people care about me at all? It goes away but I've come to expect it. It lasts for 24-48 hours. It's a holdover from not having enough resources to keep up with bills and feeling like there's going to be nothing left at some point. I've had to work really hard, for example, not to be a full-on hoarder. [ Reply | More ]

My family was never destitute, probably LMC/MC. I'm not afraid of losing what I have but I am super averse to carrying debt. We always bought our cars in cash, paying in full, and I am now throwing all extra money at the mortgage principal because I hate seeing us lose money to interest over time (though I know if we invested the money instead, we could conceivably have a higher rate of return than the mortgage interest rate). It’s a great feeling to have no mortgage. I get chastised on ub when I say that, because the soohisticates would carry debt on their primary residence to play the stock market, but it’s not just about the numbers — it’s a great feeling of security. I vote for continuing to pay it down. [ Reply | More ]

I grew up poor/LMC. Food stamp poor. HHI $1mm and net worth $20mm. Not sure how to explain this. Not a fear exactly. In fact, I’d say I’m overly confident that if I lose it all, I’d be able to get by even if I take a low paying marginal job — it would not be beneath me. What IS odd is that I only spend for a MC living. Think: smaller home, 17 year old car, not much travel and only coach, clips coupons and looks for sales. If you looked at me, you’d say I do ok but you’d never guess. I stay under the radar as far as the social set is concerned. [ Reply | More ]

My mom grew up poor (she's deceased, born in 1933)--like her father died during the depression poor, leaving her mom with 7 kids, she remembers hiding in the closet from bill collectors, etc. My dad was a good provider, and we were middle class growing up, but I don't think it ever left her mind. I don't remember my ever being worried about money as a kid, but my parents were extremely frugal (my dad's just cheap :) and that continued for the rest of her life. We would have to beg her to travel anywhere (and arguably they had the money to do it) and she was always worried about running out of money. [ Reply | More ]
