Does the parent read to the child every night? Several books a day? Some kids learn the major parts of reading at home with their parents by just naturally reading books. It's a pleasure to read for them. I think it would be very hard to learn solely at school. [ Reply | More ]

Reading is developmental. Blaming the school in first grade is silly. Blaming the school in 3rd grade is also a bit harsh if you have given the K, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers 30+ students who have very difficult home lives, no involved parents making sure they do homework, few books or supplies when kids have none themselves, and insist that teachers cannot send a child out of their class if that child is being disruptive. But it's always the teachers's fault if the child can't read, according to certain people who are getting rich by refusing to teach any of the type of children I just described. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What is like to be a really attractive woman? Any really attractive women on the board? Like you wake up every morning, stretch, and just say, "Well, I guess it's time to be offered a ton of random dick. Let's just get the day started." Like cabs get into car accidents when you walk by, your Outlook calendar is filled with meeting invites for projects that you're only peripherally involved in, you're seated immediately - and prominently - in restaurants, people give you free shit all the time, men invent reasons to do a drive by your office, etc. What's that like? I'm not one of these! But while it may have perks when you are young and beautiful, it's a difficult transition when you grow older and your looks fade. My Aunt was a beauty and she is now very emotionally damaged in her old age (wears way too much make-up, dresses very young). It's sad. Even Cybill Shepherd talked about how horrible it felt when men starting noticing her daughter and ignoring her. [ Reply | More ]

I overheard my good looking uncle on the phone complaining how the young girls aren't interested in him. Haha. He divorced my aunt and decided to go young. It worked while he was in his 40's but a beautiful 20's girl isn't dating a 50 something--unless it's real love or lots of money. They know their worth. I was a beautiful 20's girl who dated an older man who took me to Europe, bought me a house. And now I'm a 40 something happily married to a 40 something guy. I rent out the house and the property it sits on is worth over a million. I'm happy. All my pretty 20 something girlfriends married for love and had babies. They all are unhappy now no money and bratty kids and stupid frickin vacations to Mrytle Beach. [ Reply | More ]

Do you grow your own food garden and raise your own chicken for eggs and meat, drill a well for your own water, process your own sewage, sew all of your own clothes with fabric you have woven on your own handmade loom from wood you grew and chopped from your back yard? No, I doubt that you do-we all need assistance accomplishing things, so back off. "Outsourcing child care" is such a holier than thou way of saying it, and you have no idea if her nanny is in the form of a mother, a sister, a friend, a 5th generation college graduate, or a person new to America who is looking for meaningful work. She has help raising her children in a healthy and productive manner which enables her (and any other WOHMs) to go back to a career she wants to be a part of. There's nothing wrong with that. [ - ] My mother has this bad habit (or whatever it is) of constantly intervening the behavior of my perfectly fine 5 year old. For instance, I'm driving, he's talking in the back seat nonstop about nothing, and she says "Be quiet, let mommy drive in peace" or he was following my brother around while he was working on some mundane maintenance issues and my mother instructed him to "come sit down and leave Uncle joey alone"...I told my mom if Uncle Joey doesn't want my son around, he'll say something. (Uncle Joey could care less--he loves the kid and is very good natured). I'm not getting why my mother thinks she needs to intervene, especially since my son isn't doing anything wrong...just talking or singing or following and watching his family. And the thing I hate the most is my mother seems to "blame" other people for disciplining my son. "Don't talk while Mommy is driving". My son talks the whole time we are in the car together and it's just fine. If I need him to be quiet, I will tell him to be quiet. I actually did mention it to my mother to let my son follow his uncle around and she just said "no.". I'm not going to get in a big fight over this so I just stood next to my son watching his uncle fix an outlet. Anyone deal with this successfully? BTW, I know this is a very cool story so no need to csb me. Thanks. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Wait, so some college students made a poor decision and so we shouldn't raise money for charity? Don't college students do that regardless? [ Reply | More ]

What is great about this is that so much money is being collected directly to charities without professional "fundraisers" getting a cut of 25 - 50% of your donation. They don't have to pay for advertising or mailers. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My 16 year old daughter just said something else to break my heart. Something about how she can't wait to get away from me and go to college What should my reaction be? Do I express how hurt I am? Do I assume there's something g really wrong going on or so I let it go? 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

ask her why she feels like that? What would make her time left at home more enjoyable? I'm sure she is trying for a reaction though. Maybe just let it go. [ Reply | More ]

I have a 16 yo dd- she hasn't expressed this yet but only because I think she is intimidated by the entire process and can't yet imagine that she will soon make it through to the other side. Your dd sounds like she is looking forward to some independence- I think this is a good thing. I personally would respond with something positive, ' I will be so excited for you' or open the door up to an interesting discussion- what kind of college can you see yourself? ... [ Reply | More ]

I think you can do both - acknowledge her desire for independence and to detach from you and your hurt and sadness over the process (maybe it will help her to develop compassion). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] s/o on the most popular post about the Mom who has to fill out all the forms. I agree w OP - I must be the only one. For my DCs we have a million collages, forms, art projects. All things I have to do that the kids don't even care about. I get why the school does it but I am not an arts and crafts mom and am very busy. I'd rather be WITH my kids than spending time on these projects. Of course I will do it. But I think it's ok to vent about the time suck, it doesn't make OP a bad mom. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I know a lot of people freak out about this but we had a perfectly normal experience with both my children in this situation. There can be disruptive kids but that's what the 2nd teacher in there for. Plus you're always going to get disruptive kids at some point in any kind of classroom. [ Reply | More ]

I teach in an ICT classroom and it's great -- kids get much more individualized attention. Just because a child is labeled as "special ed" doesn't mean that they have behavioral problems and will disrupt the class. There are certainly disruptive kids in a general ed classroom and there is only one teacher. [ Reply | More ]
