I don't know why it is so hard for me to find the right fit. I am very accomplished; my work is excellent; my colleagues enjoy working with me; but I admit I often cannot stand my boss, whoever and in nearly any job, I've hated my boss. General Topics 10.26.14, 04:07 AM Flag

no, not promised. And few people in the org know I was up for it, so it is just that I am even more annoyed by those above me than I was before I tried to get this promotion. My respect for the boss (he's new -- 1 yr on the job) is dwindling. No other avenues for advancement that I can see (smallish organization; administrative side of higher ed). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Maybe you guys can help me try to piece together this strange scenario. I'm a PhD student, and I recently found out my favorite professor is married to a registered sex offender. Her husband committed his acts in 2001, and my professor has since had 2 children with him. She's extremely successful and definitely doesn't need to stay with him for financial reasons. When I pulled up her CV, I noticed her interested shifted from immigrants and educational attainment to child sexual behavior right around the time her husband was convicted. So, she stays with this guy, gets pregnant by him almost immediately after his awful acts, and then devotes her life to studying child sexual behavior-- what do you think? Is something wrong with her? I'm hesitant to work with her now because I feel like something is just wrong. 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

wow. I have never gone beyond a BA but if your working with her would mean becoming close or getting into each other's heads then I would definitely stay away. I agree it sounds like there is some dark sh*t going on in that family. That said, if you can maintain an arm's length distance then you may learn quite a lot from this professor because I imagine her curiosity and interest goes well beyond academic. The danger is that she could go down a very wrong path with a theory or idea and you might not want to follow her there. good luck! [ Reply | More ]

My husband on the other hand, gives me a hard time about it and pressures me, saying he's going to have problems when he grows up. I do my best to be nurturing and to discuss these issues with our child (who is elementary school), but these are all facets of his personality, that I have noticed since birth, and I accept them. I don't think that there is a "cure" for everything, and I feel that is the case here. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It has been this way always, and I have implemented every strategy that I could find. There is structure and routines in our household, positive encouragement- you name it. Our child simply struggles with self control and has to have his needs met immediately. When he is hungry, bored, or tired it becomes worse. We have had discussions about it, and he realizes that he is unreasonable, but says he wishes he could help it, but he just can't- not matter how hard he tries. So I have decided to go on that, and let him know that I love him regardlessly. [ Reply | More ]

He does exceptionally well with his school work, and teachers say if only his self control were good, he'd be a star student. I know the three triggers 1)tired 2)hungry 3)bored. OP: OK, so I am not totally out of touch. I work in Latin America, so you'd think I would have heard of it. Sapo, yes. I knew about the toad slime, but not this herbal brew that seems like another form of LSD. There are some crazy stories out there! [ Reply | More ]

Really it's the internet. Kids have access to so much more information through channels we never did. Get involved with the wrong people and you're down the rabbit hole. It's very scary to be the parent of teens now. Look at all this ISIS crazy. [ Reply | More ]

I imagine that the "average joe" doesn't know about it. DH does a lot of reading on these practices within these cultures and that's how I know about it. It's nothing new, as it has been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years (maybe even thousands) but now that we are more knowledgeable about practices within these cultures, it has become more widely known. OP: I think the issue is that it is no longer some sort of isolated tribal practice. Tourists come from all over the world to partake. There are all kinds of sham shamans popping up with their retreat centers and people die or get raped, etc. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I agree that it is the shaman experience that people are seeking. I don't think there is rampant death and rape, but that it occurs in isolated sitations. [ Reply | More ]
