[ - ] Question about following rules. At our UMC pool club, there are very clear rules of not eating or drinking (other than water) outside of the picnic area. So even though there are tables pool side, you are forbidden from eating. The intent is obvious, to avoid bugs, spills, garbage on the pool deck. However, many parents let their young kids sneak food in the area. Sitting under a towel etc. To me, you are teaching you kid to 1) Not follow rules you find inconvenient 2) That it only matters if you get caught. Thoughts? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I was annoyed on behalf of the people working there. And yes, I did pick up the cups and asked the sales associate where their garbage is. Tennis in the US was a more popular sport a generation ago- the pro tours were largely a US-based schedule, other more fast sports like football and basketball hadnt overtaken tennis, the stars were American, and the population was more white, making it more likely to get a critical mass in US cities. General Topics 08.29.16, 02:11 AM Flag

I think a social climber is someone who is actually concerned with their "position in society". I think a striver is someone who just wants more than they have. Social climbers bother me because they're that person who's always looking over your shoulder for someone more important to talk to. I know strivers get bashed a lot, but so long as they aren't malicious they really don't bother me. [ Reply | More ]

I think of a social climber as someone who unflinchingly uses people to climb her way to the top of the perceived social ladder- is friendly to you for a few weeks, then immediately ditches you completely once she befriends someone slightly "higher" than you. You're just a stepping stone. A striver is just someone who wants to put on the appearance of being rich and doing the "right things" without it being necessarily tied to befriending certain people. IMO. [ Reply | More ]

Agree, IMO, climber is very specific to being high-status in a social sense, like someone who moves to an elite town and immediately tries to find out who the "important" people are so they can befriend them. Striver is materialistic and hung up on appearances, ex. posting on UB about "Is this bag classy" or "Is the X ski resort high-end", but not necessarily a people-user. [ Reply | More ]

Because I hate them. They make me dizzy, occasionally I'll throw up, and they truly terrify me when the drop comes. My sons and DH love them, so we go to the park, and I have a very nice time on the bench reading and doing the cheesy carnival games with my sons in between rides. Honestly, our whole family has fun, I'm not sure why you get to dictate how a family enjoys an amusement park. [ Reply | More ]

It depends on the family. If dcs are over 10, who cares if you go on the rides with them? They are just thrilled mom took them. Or, if Dh is a roller coaster junkie, no harm in heading back for a quiet hour by the pool or nap while he and dcs go wild. [ Reply | More ]

I don't care. I was just surprised at how selfish some of the posters seemed. They dont enjoy it, end of story. It is enough just to buy the damn ticket. Kids are spoiled blahblahblah. Just depends. I don't swim but allow my kids to go to the pool and I sun or read a magazine while they swim. I do engage with them too. The mom in the story let her kid take his iPad to bed?! She is an idiot. As a computer programmer, I'm a big fan of screen time, but with limits. We let DD have some time daily when she was 2 and she began to show signs of withdrawal, so we restructured it to be 60 minutes a week of just math/science/reading/chess apps, and she's been fine (age 5 1/2 now). This week we let it go up to 90 mins by mistake (I'm pregnant and I fell asleep) and she had a glazed look on her face, so clearly that's too much. [ Reply | More ]

DD/6 gets some iPad/movies/cartoons/whatever (we monitor and direct towards quality stuff - and you'd be surprised how much 'quality' stuff is really junk if you actually watch it, btw, don't trust any label/brand for content) on the weekend. Never at night, now and then during the week. No video games. That stuff rots your brain. [ Reply | More ]

I let my kids have a lot of screen time and they never suffered for it. I think some kids however don't regulate themselves. Both are in college and beyond. Doing exceptionally well in school too. [ Reply | More ]
