[ - ] So my 12 year old nephew is very underweight. So my SIL decided to sign him up for cross country because she heard running will make him eat more and increase his muscle mass. When he eats, she does the deceptively delicious method and makes vegetables into his waffles, muffins, sauces thinking that will make him gain weight. She can't figure out why in the first week of running he lost 5 pounds. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It is a perfectly reasonable position. You can do all kinds of interesting work in the nursing field from standard bedside nursing to research to admin to being a NP, and since it is mostly still a female field it is very family friendly. Plenty of doctors have families, but it is a much longer road to get there a and not as family friendly in many settings. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a doctor and am shocked that you are shocked. Of course you can have a family as a doctor (I do), but the years of medical school, residency, potentially fellowship training, etc. can delay things alot. There is absolutely nothing wrong with looking at some of these factors when deciding upon a career. Most people are probably at least mildly narcissistic. My mother is, I'm fairly certain, pathologically narcissistic. Examples: Her favorite lines when we were growing up (and later) were "Give, give, give--all I do is give" (which she didn't, though her mother did), "Walk a mile in my shoes" (bear in mind this is someone with inherited wealth who's never worked). She also did this weird curtsey thing and said "Yes, my Queen" if asked for a normal thing like a glass of water. I avoid her nowadays. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Pregnant lady vent: I am pregnant with my first, dont know the gender, and my due date is approaching. It is insane how many ridiculous comments I have gotten from people -- strangers and family -- about gender stereotypes and expectations. I am the youngest of 3 by a significant amount (my sister is 15 years older, my brother is 12 years older, ) and my own family is a good example of this. Some of my friends were "heartbroken" over never having a daughter because they imagined the close mother daughter relationship, wedding dress shopping together, having a closer relationship to grandchildren, etc. Well, my sis is 46, single, never married, no kids. She and my mom are friendly but not overly close, she has always been closer to my father. My brother is 42, married, 2 kids, and he and his wife have a very close relationship with my mom -- they even lived with her for 4 years when they first got amrried. But, he was never into sports growing up, to the disappointment of my dad. I've always been more of a wildcard and have had a different relationship with my parents as they are older (they are in their 70s) but every time people ask me what gender I am hoping for I just want to smack them and say gender is no guarantee of anything! A person is a person! 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know. I could see that, but I found it odd that he would admit to watching that movie and say he thought it would happen to him. And how are you forced into admitting you sexually abused children? And equally important, why isn't a pre-school a mandatory reporter? That was shocking. [ Reply | More ]

ITs all strange. Accuser says she saw the guy have children touch his genital area. Well, when you see that even ONE time as a teacher, you have to intervene Immediately! (Speak with him immediately, remove him from kids, talk to administrators, etc). Not just add it to your growing list to report at some point down the road. Doesn't make any sense. [ Reply | More ]

I wrote that as an upper class woman. I won't be young, hot, and employable forever. I know that the system will have to support me at some point. Let's say I live to be 90, like most of my relatives? You could be supporting me for 20 years, from age 70-90. If I outlive my savings and pension, you will be supporting me. [ Reply | More ]

The Government and Taxpayers should pay for it. Just like in other industrialized nations. This makes life more secure for people in the long run. Look at Germany. People stopped reproducing. Birth rates fell. The government responded by giving benefits and maternity leave to people who will reproduce. Without a sufficient next generation, who will build and fund the country when we are older? [ Reply | More ]

Also, infancy and early childhood has a HUGE effect on the outcomes of adults in society. Educated parenting and reduced trauma/stress scores equal A HUGE HUGE HUGE cost-savings for our country in the long term on healthcare and incarceration. This is all supported, evidence-based fact, but most people HATE to invest in the long-term instead of this fiscal-year's budget even when you save so much money in the end. Think of it as infrastructure that leads to compound social interest. [ Reply | More ]

Uhhhh... Do you have something against public education, too? That is the government paying for the nation's children to be educated so they can become capitalists. Aren't you happy they are becoming capitalists? Nations where families are supported in their reproduction choices are nations that have healthy economies and content, better educated citizens. As a conservative, shouldn't you be concerned that if we are not supporting citizens who are reproducing, then most of our population growth will be coming from immigration instead of reproduction (devil's advocate here)? How does that work better for your vision of America??? [ Reply | More ]

It is not the same thing. Education is one thing. Everyone should have access to free and excellent education. Your company going broke because they have to pay for months and months of leave each time one of their female employees decided she needs to have kids is something else. There are A LOT of women in the workforce. More younger women enter every year. Some companies are made up of mostly women of childbearing age. You expect them to pony up 3-6 months (or more according to you) of fully paid salaries when these women stay home with their children? Having kids is a choice. In the mean time they have to pay another salary to someone who replaces these "madonnas" for the time being and then dismiss the new worker when the queen decided to come back from her sahm interlude? I am sorry, but I find this concept ridiculous. If you cannot afford kids on your own don't have any. Do not expect your employer to pick up the tab for you. [ Reply | More ]

Amazing. Do you feel the same way about health insurance? Vacation days? Sick leave? Are you against the FMLA? (Your job has to HOLD YOUR POSITION FOR YOU FOR 12 months while you are out having a baby -- the horror.) These are not hard lines, they are gray areas and your logic doesn't apply equally. I think you need to expand your mind on this one. I work for a NON-PROFIT and they did not go broke paying my salary while I was on maternity leave. FOR-PROFIT companies certainly shouldn't do so either, if they are managing their money well. [ Reply | More ]

I use cc for EVERYTHING, even miniscule purchases. Same two cards. The one that offers more cash back at the time gets used more. In this case you only get one bill per month (or two) and it is easier to keep track of what you spend. Many cards offer itemized category statement at the end of each year so you can see where your money went and make adjustments henceforth. [ Reply | More ]
