no just curious, i'm a public school teacher in sunset park and have 38 grade 5 students in my class right now. i know i do a pretty good job, but would do a great job with 25 students. [ Reply | More ]

Most public schools do not have 38 kids per class. What is the union negotiated #? [ Reply | More ]

32 is the cut off, but if you have over then you get a para 3 periods a day. there has to be enough across the grade to justifying opening another class. that being said there needs to be space in the school to open up another class (which my school has none). [ Reply | More ]

Just curious, why are you doing this comparison with SA specifically? [ Reply | More ]

np-SA is known to be recruiting. they also invest a lot in teacher education. many good teachers are considering the trade offs. [ Reply | More ]

sa claims to be doing great things, but are we dealing with an equal playing field? [ Reply | More ]

np from above. of course not. as a simple example, i had a friend tell me about a co-located school where the boe school had put in a request to get simple things done (bathrooms with working stall doors and hallways without peeling lead paint). three years later, the bureaucracy still couldn't get around to it. the SA school just did it. then there is this perception that they just threw money at the problem. they didn't. they just didn't have to deal with headaches and bureaucracy. it's harder in a boe school because of the silliness. and it hinders teachers from doing a great job, as well as the kids. sad. yipes. it makes me so mad that good teachers are having to deal with this kind of thing. are you a middle school science teacher or something? i am thinking you must be in an area that is very constrained... [ Reply | More ]

yeah, that makes sense. look, if i were you, i'd call over to one of the schools and tour it one day. just take the day off before the school year is over and visit the nearby Sa while in session. talk to some teachers, and maybe an administrator. see what it feels like. there are definite trade offs and there is no downside in understanding them. maybe you'll decide that you like it where you are, even with all of those kids. no harm in learning. Do you want to bet OP isn't asking because she is considering switching. She gets paid more than SA teachers make, has better benefits and pension. [ Reply | More ]

I have a different question, I have a 5th grader at a DOE school. Teacher has 26 kids. Not once this year has my child brought back graded/checked hw. Just curious, is this acceptable at SA? [ Reply | More ]

No. It's considered a good school...Every other year my dc has a lazy teacher. We had 3 great teachers and 2 totally lazy teachers (nice and kids like them) and one nasty mean teacher who simply couldn't handle the class. [ Reply | More ]

I've sat idly by while others have called out SA spam because I didn't want to believe any school would feel the need to do it, but this is so transparent. Come on people, if you want to take out more ads, just do it. All these UB spam posts are just distasteful and if I was considering the school, you've made me think twice. [ Reply | More ]
