[ - ] I just saw a post about a mom sending her 8 year old to sleep away camp for seven weeks. I am not from the East Coast. Is this normal. Everyone who responded acted like it was no big deal. I went to one week of sleep away camp at 12 and counted the days until I could go home, I was so homesick. Now I am raising my kids in NYC. What do NYC moms think is an appropriate age to start sleep away camp and for how many weeks. Moms outside of NYC do you send your kids to sleep away camp (for how many weeks and what age). I go back and forth between thinking a long stint at sleep away camp at a young age would be amazing for teaching kids independence to worrying about how homesick my kids would be and what they could be exposed to if around other kids 24/7 for weeks on end. When I went, I do remember the other girls talking about sex a lot and it was news to me since my own friends were more of the goody goody type back home. 1 Reply [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think it depends on the child, but maybe if you'd had your week of homesickness at eight you would have loved camp by 12. My DD is going this year for the first time -- she's 8, and we had a choice of 3.5 weeks or 7 and are sending her for 3.5. She's already asking to go for all 7 next year, and she hasn't even gone yet. Anyway, she's very excited about it, and I really think she's the kind of kid who will thrive at camp -- she loves the social life of a group of kids and has loved her day camp experiences the last three years. [ - ] I just got back from the home of one of those real master of the universe types. Huge house on the water owned by a finance guy who achieved the level that so many people aspire to. Separate wings, game room, gym, etc etc etc. And like most houses like this what struck me is how empty and plain the thing is. It's clear that these people pay a 'designer' to design their homes and they wind up with a big empty house full of off white walls with gray furniture and walnut accents. Huge rooms with three pieces of furniture in them and one piece of art on the wall. Nothing but white and gray and dark wood accents. I guess you can buy the house but you can't buy taste. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] My oldest is staring Bronx Science. My 2 young kids are at charter on the UWS. We own a condo which is great and we are very comfortable but we could rents it out and have positive cash flow around 15K + renters would be paying off mortgage. We could buy an equivalent apartment in the Bx and have housing costs almost fully covered by the rental (assuming we drain our savings in the purchase). This would mean we could up our savings rate by 40K/year which would = college fund for 1 dc. We would pay for this in having to drag kids to school far away every day. We both work. What do you guys think? 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The Bronx is full of working families. We live in the South Bronx in a 24 hour doorman building. Transportation is much better here than in Riverdale--we're 15 minutes from E. 86th St. and 20 minutes from Columbus Circle.
