[ - ] Need advice! My mother watched my child tonight. My child is 8 and a computer addict, I have posted about his addiction here before. He apparently too my iMac into his room and hacked the password and changed it to something else. Then he called his friend on Skype and had a 2 hr conversation. I just got home and and for a while I was unable to log in. I tried rebooting for a while, with instructions for the terminal to no avail. He came out of his room and fixed the problem so I changed the password he put in to my old one. I need "time out" ideas. Note: he really does not care about time-outs much, I do not know what to do. Do I ignore him for days? Hide my computers while I am gone? I am so mad at my mother as well. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Wha? How did he hack the password? If he knows it, why would you change it back to the old one? I haven't seen your other posts, but there's no such thing as a chemical addiction to a computer. Any 'addiction' here is a failure to teach your DC the meaning of 'no'. Don't be furious at your mother. Her job is not to right everything you've done wrong. Believe me, my DC are no angels, but this seems to go beyond. [ Reply | More ]

^^ Oh, and you don't ignore him (that's cruel), and you don't do time outs for an 8 year old for an infraction of this size. You take away the computers. Bring them into work or disconnect your internet for a while. Natural consequence. [ Reply | More ]

My mother was here to watch him. She went to the other room and watched a movie while dc grabbed my computer (there is a reason my computer has a password, speaking of "no!") and re-set the computer to factory settings after which he put in his own password. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I understand all that, but everything I said still stands. If your 8 year old can reset the computer like that, he needs to take a break from computers. A password is not the same as 'no', fwiw. [ Reply | More ]
