[ - ] If you have a vacation home, do your guests also treat you like a babysitting service? Both of my SILs have done this to me this summer - where they disappear and leave me with all the DCs - and it's so obnoxious. Last night, my SIL was outside drinking wine in a hammock while I put all 4 of her DCs (plus my 3) to bed. This morning, she keeps talking about how nice it was so just do nothing this weekend and carve out some "me time" for herself. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Op: she left the oldest one (age 10) "in charge" of putting her 6 yo twins and 3 yo DD to bed. Of course, the younger ones needed help so I had to brush their teeth and change them, then the 3 yo started crying, so I went outside and told SIL to come in and help. But I don't understand why it wouldn't occur to her not to do something like that. Obviously a 10 yo can't handle that by herself, and I'm sure she knew I would need to step in and take care of them. Don't say anything to the ex. Work with the 11 yr old on how to clean a kitchen and/or on speaking up "what is that smell?" I have an 11 yr old and this is what I would do. Your child can choose to not say anything, to clean the kitchen up, or to ask his dad about it. He is 11. My answer would be different for a 5 yr old. [ Reply | More ]

I would tell the ex that what ds said and tell him that he was afraid to say anything. It would be different because I would think that the threat of him being mean to ds about saying anything would be less if he is younger, but if your ex has a short temper then maybe a 5 yr old wouldn't even be safe. I wouldn't say anything to ex because I wouldn't want him to yell at ds about telling me. How often does your ds have to go over there? My 11 yr old would not say anything either, and he wouldn't clean the kitchen, but showing him these things lets him be empowered to make a choice and it is okay to make a choice to not do anything. That is a valid choice. [ Reply | More ]

+1 my sons were allowed to have guests in their rooms with the doors closed for as long as they wanted, as long as there were condoms and their girlfriends were on birth control. I was very clear with them about the definition of statutory rape (I told them even if their girlfriend was "cool" her parents might not be, what if they broke up with her and she and her parents turned vengeful, etc.) so as far as I know they waited until 16. But after that, I knew they were going to have sex anyway, may as well be safely at our house instead of cars, woods, wherever. No hitches, no pregnancies, they are both adults now. [ Reply | More ]
