I don't understand why they would want to move to a dessert full of strip malls and white trash low culture people. Phoenix is all retired real estate agents who golf all day. Just seems so boring. Surprised that two people who are so into culture, travel, and arts would move to a wasteland like Phoenix. I know he got a good job there, but he has a good job in NYC. What's the appeal of Phoenix? It's deathly hot out all the time. There are no seasons. The best university in the state is the the nation's biggest party/safety school. And you're surrounded by drug cartel border crime from Mexico. For people who have so much money they can easily live anywhere, I just don't see the appeal. 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

People here are so NYC centric. Phoenix, like any other city, has ballet companies, opera companies, theater companies, art museums, ethnic cuisine, and all the other features of any major city. Sure they may not have as many broadway shows or as many arts venues, but unless you are literally doing that stuff every day it's not an issue. You can find things to do every weekend in Phoenix with no problem. People here really need to get out of their bubble. There's a whole world out there. And Phoenix has lots of outdoorsy stuff like hiking trails and biking through mountains that NYC just doesn't. [ Reply | More ]

People won't be honest with you. My thoughts are - ace the math section. The first one you miss in math takes you down 50 points. So if you are a math kid make sure you focus there and get perfect score if at all possible. Make sure your child knows the geometry. Then learn the logic style. Those are in enjsh but easy for math kid. Scrambled paragraphs have the least return on investment. Cleaning on e you learn the basic tricks you don't tend to improve your score much so don't spend time and effort there. And your kid will miss some enjsh - but if perfect math and logic score will get him in. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

I think it has always happened, we just read about it more now. I'm guessing (hoping) it happens less frequently. I think the root of it is that when you are a teacher, you spend most of your workday with students, not teachers or other adults. And some of those students are very impressive. But it's a skewed view, because you only really see how sophisticated they are in their approach to Physics or History or whatever subject you teach. I can see how a lonely or odd teacher can fall for a student, but I think it's a disastrous and unfair situation for everyone involved--even for the grad students I know who dated professors, it never seemed to be a healthy relationship. I'd never do it. [ Reply | More ]

She felt more like a colleague than a student, and when a fire would arise, often she had put it out before I could find her to discuss it. One of the most capable people I've ever worked with--in a school or in business. She was very good academically, but mainly she was 'real world smart,' if that makes sense. General Topics 07.01.16, 06:30 PM Flag

Ha. It always seems like the ones you wish were involved aren't and vice versa. For me, I like knowing the parents--I usually have very good relationships with them--but when a kid is in high school, her parents don't need to be too involved. She should be learning how to deal with school and academics on her own. (I love it if the parents get excited about the books we read or the language we are learning, but someone who seems to be asking me a lot of questions on behalf of their kids can be a bit much to take. I've had parents who wanted me to be constantly discussing matters with their kid's tutor--that was the most irritating.) Bottom line: in high school I feel like the kids are learning how to function more like adults, so the less hand-holding by parents, the better it is. [ Reply | More ]

This opinion is based on anecdotal evidence but I believe there are far more Jewish communities in LA area than in SF. In fact, a former co-worker moved there for that very reason, and soon found a nice orthodox Jewish woman to marry. Your reasons for not moving to a particular city though are fairly immature. Do you really think that everyone who lives in LA is a TV or movie buff? Or that everyone in SF/Silicon valley works in tech? SF is not all that hippyish either (perhaps you are thinking of Berkley right across the bay). [ Reply | More ]

But both of them seem to have converted to a very conservative evangelical-ish Christian faith and are now preaching at the family all the time about forgiveness and Jesus etc. The thing is we're an atheist/Jewish family so this is all really strange to my parents and siblings and me. And my SIL came from a much more religious Jewish family. I also found out that as part of their reconciliation my SIL now has a don't ask don't tell policy about his affairs. Do you think my brother brainwashed her and manipulated her into accepting his gross behavior with a new religion that condones it? I'm dumbfounded here. 36 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I know it seems weird but if they're really saved -- which I hope they are - this is what happens. People change completely. Part of the change is the saved person's life totally transforms. They end up losing most if not all the people they know. That's just par for the course. You and your family's reaction is normal. What he did was wrong and adultery is actually the single sanctioned cause of divorce in the bible. But if their conversion is real, I can see how they got past it. [ Reply | More ]

Adultery is not allowed within Christianity. If he's still doing it, he's wrong and if he is indeed saved, he needs to repent and ask his wife for forgiveness. She is wrong to accept this behaviour. The Bible says that the Marriage bed is undefiled. Forgiveness is a standard within Christianity. Adultery is not. [ Reply | More ]

Oooh I didn't get that. Well if he claims to be saved and is doing this, he's heaping coals on his own head. He would have been better off never hearing about Jesus, tbh. What they're doing is absolutely not standard Christianity or marriage according to the bible. It instructs that men love their wives like their own bodies, like Jesus loves the church. And that God has a special judgment against adulterers because be created marriage. Not good for him. She is free to leave him and remarry if he's cheating. [ Reply | More ]

Just FYI - whereas if he remarries he's committing adultery again. Basically only people who have lost their spouses to adultery or who are widowed are free to remarry. Saved means you accept Jesus as the son of God, that he died and rose from the dead and is sitting at the right hand of God the father and will be returning one day to collect his people. Not quite. Yes they are God's chosen people, but they have been suffering for turning away from him for centuries. Just as the bible said they would. in fact, the bible says their eyes have been blinded to the truth about Jesus because they insisted on not following him. When they called for his crucifixion at the trial with Pontius Pilate and chose Barnabas to be set free instead (as was tradition) they called down the curse of His blood upon them and all their children. We are only saved if we come to God through Jesus Christ. That is the only way. God has a special dispensation for the Jews in the end times. [ Reply | More ]

Revelation 3:9 says "Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee." Many people believe the people we call Jews are not the real Jews of the bible. That the real Jews are in fact those particular black people who were involved in slavery. I.e. Not all Africans. No. We are responsible for ourselves. The people who called for his crucifixion called a curse down on themselves - that if Jesus really was the son of God as he claimed and they were killing him - that they would accept the punishment. We are instructed as parents to raise up our children in the way they should go (with faith in Jesus). There are definitely such things as generational curses, though. They are let in through sin. This is why a family gets plagues by things like suicide and mental illness and poverty. We have to pray for those curses to be broken. [ Reply | More ]

I hear you but that is emphatically not what the bible teaches in this case. The bible says the man is the covering of the woman and he is to love and protect her. She is to accept his leadership. The world twists what the bible says - it says more beautiful things about the value of a wife than vice versa. That a good wife is rare and that when a man finds one he is blessed by God. That God won't hear his prayers if he's mistreating his wife in anyway. Psalm 31 [ Reply | More ]
