Yes, my dc learned at 3. Not because he we wanted him to be ahead, but because he had always loved letters and really wanted to learn. I don't think it caused him any problems in K. So I think it's fine to teach your dc, if they want to learn. If they're not interested or not ready, though, then I wouldn't bother. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I had a very uncomfortable moment the other day that I can't stop thinking about and I feel the need to vent about it, and since this is the only place I can do it without worrying about causing more problems for myself, you all get to hear it. Please feel free to comment but I would love some actual responses not just typical mommy war crap. So I am working mom (lawyer). However I have also been a SAHM (6 years). I have friends who are both. I am always meeting new people where I live . When meeting new people and having that get to know you conversation, I usually at some point ask "what do you do?" However, recently I have felt more and more awkward asking this when I meet new women, because I feel like it implies that they should have a job or whatever. So the other day, after meeting a new mom at PTA event I asked her "what do you do?" She rolled her eyes and said "I am just a mom, that's it." and then walked away. I later found out that she told a friend that I was stuck up bitch because just becuase I am lawyer I tried to make her feel crappy about being a SAHM by embarassing her in the group by asking what she does. How is this thing? How is it wrong to ask what someone does? How is this my issue and not hers? I just don't get how we have come to a place that I can't ask a woman "what she does" without offending her? If we were to become friends, wouldn't it be odd if weeks or months later I found out what her job was or if she was a SAHM? When getting to know a new friend isn't normal to find out about them? And part of finding out about them is finding out how they spend their day? right? I know I have seen comments here about how people hate being asked that -it's such a boring questions, etc. But why? I know that i spend a lot time before my career preparing for my career. Why wouldn't I know be proud to talk about it now. Why is that differnet for SAHM? If you are home, then be proud of it. Just because someone asks "what do you do?" doesn't mean they are judging what you do. And then I got to thinking, would this risk of offending someone even be an issue for a man? No way. even if that man is a SAHD. Nor is it an issue for WOHM. The only group that has an issue with this question is SAHM. So I say it's their issue, not mine! I'd love your thoughts. 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I ask "how do you spend your time" or, if I was at a PTA meeting I might say "how do you spend your time when your not dealing with PTA issues". At our school there are a shocking number of dads who don't have paid jobs (either family money or guys who have sold businesses for enough money to retire) so this comes up with both men and women for me. Here's what I do, I stay away from the "so what do you do" question for the reasons you mention. If people have jobs in addition to raising kids it usually comes up in conversation at some point, even if it's a vague reference to getting out of work in time for pickup or something. THEN you ask them what they do or where they work. [ Reply | More ]

Wrong. It's akin to asking people "how much money do you have and where do you get it." It also leads to incredibly boring conversations. The only thing duller than talking to someone about what I do for a living is talking to someone about what he or she does for a living. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I generally follow this but I was at a new mom event the other day and the mom I was speaking with mentioned vacation from "work" a few times. I finally just asked her what she did because it seemed natural to the conversation but I wouldn't normally have done that if she has not referenced that she had a profession a few times. Even then, I felt that I had sort of crossed the line and I thought maybe I should not have asked. [ Reply | More ]

OP: that is complete and utter nonsense. and rule of ettiquite from an age and group that got their money from ways other than working. SAHM here. I'm not personally offended when people ask me what I do. But keep in mind this can be a sensitive issue, and a lot depends on other factors, such as context, tone, etc. For example, if you had said, "I'm a doctor/attorney/Indian chief/other important job, what do YOU do," then it might come across as a little more pointed and sound judgmental.
