[ - ] I am a WOHM with 3 DCs in a small private school. I don't have a ton of free time, but I do try to get to moms' events whenever possible. Every time I do, I feel like all the other moms (mostly SAHMs or moms who work PT) go on and on about all of their DCs' *best* friends and play dates and parties that my kids weren't invited to. I feel like such a loser sitting there while they do this, but also I wonder if I am a bad mom because I'm too busy to arrange lots of social events for my DCs. Anyone else ever feel like this? 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

OP: 3, 7 and 8. I've noticed this among the 7 and 8 year olds, but not the 3 yo yet. Today I was at an event where one of the moms kept talking about how her DS was going to a "best friends" party for someone's birthday, and only 5 of the boys in the class were invited. There are only 8 boys in the class total, which means that my DS was one of only 3 that were left out (and btw, he has had play dates with the birthday boy many times and considers him a friend). This woman was clearly bragging and wanted people to know her kid was included in something other kids were left out of, and I'm not sure what would motivate someone to do that. [ Reply | More ]

All the time. I always get paranoid when I hear other moms or kid start talking about playdates because I fear that there is whole social scene that my DC is being excluded from. It's usually not the case though. Though my school has a lot of WOHMs so most are as busy as me. [ Reply | More ]

I love food and cooking and used to enjoy making great (and not always zero calorie) dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Loved trying new restaurants with my toddler and other SAHM friends during the day too. I've explained my concerns to the head of school, suggesting that they could better accommodate for different skills - even if they did maintain that academic rigor, and she actually said that some parents would comment that it is not academic enough!! I find that hard to believe but each to their own!! [ Reply | More ]

That was a major turn off for me too but I was looking for an old-fashioned provider type and that would have been an early tell that I was barking up the wrong tree. You are both looking for something different, move on. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I always offer to split on the first date, he refused and paid it fully and nudged me saying I could get the next one. 2nd date, he asked for the check when our plates were being cleared and when I got back from the restroom, he says 'You'll get this check?' pause 'Or do you want me to get it?'. It puts a tone in the atmosphere... I pulled my card out immediately and paid. [ Reply | More ]

Pp: I'm old and even older fashioned, so maybe my experience is no longer valid, but I always subscribed to the host/hostess pays model. If a man invites in the first date and chooses the restaurant, he pays, and I wouldn't have offered to split. After two dates I would have invited him out, chosen the restaurant or event, and paid without expecting a contribution. I think it's nicer for someone to be the host and the other to be the guest. If you like him otherwise can you talk to him about it, and not at the moment when a check has just been dropped? Df and a beau had some disagreement and awkwardness about this early on, talked it over, and now they're very happily married with two DCs. Dating is expensive, and we live in a time of weirdly fluid gender roles, so misunderstandings are common. It might help just to say whoever invites and chooses the restaurant pays, and then take turns. [ Reply | More ]

My understanding is that in order for it to be effective, you really have to commit. Ds's allergist said unless you are willing to do it for at least 2 to 3 years year-round, don't bother. Ds is claritin for at least 6 months a year. He wasn't able to tolerate zyrtec or allegra. [ Reply | More ]
