[ - ] My friend says her husband(who is a professor at Barnard) said that school doesn't really matter all that much for kids but rather that it's their socioeconomic background that will determine how they fare. I read something about this recently from a Finnish educator as well. Thoughts? 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

1st thought: Professors at Barnard aren't that bright. 2nd thought: Finland is an awesome kid-friendly society, so kids do better than in USA... and their schools are awesome, the best in the world. They wouldn't put so much energy and be so proud of their schools if they thought as a society that schools don't matter. As a matter of fact, Finnish think that school matters and a lot. You misunderstood the Finnish educator about "which school" the kid will go, it's true for Finland because there's tiny variation on quality between their schools (very much the opposite as in USA). ITA. I'm an adjunct professor and in almost every case, the students who are faring poorly in my class come from a lower income. I know this because when I go in to report how much a student's grades are slipping to the student affairs office, usually I can see any scholarship information or financial aid information (not how much they're getting, but that they are getting aid). There's only been 2 instances out of a couple dozen where students who were not doing well who were not receiving aid of some sort. The university accepts many of these students as a way to create "diversity," both socio-economic and racial, and ultimately it does not benefit anyone, at least in my experience. These students either come from backgrounds that don't encourage the pursuit of education and they just aren't invested, or they have to work multiple jobs to pay for basic costs of living and come into class exhausted. Socioeconomics is the most important variable ON AVERAGE. Obviously, other factors matter too, and every individual case is different. I am sure the Barnard professor understands this, even if his DW and her friends do not. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah I figured but thought you actually might have a punchline. Well let's see. Prostitutes don't do the following: Take care of demanding kids all day long, feeding them, cleaning them, changing poop diapers (often really nasty poop diapers!), cleaning the house and always tidying up (have you even seen a hooker's lair?), laundry, cooking (hookers typically order out) and oh yeah a whole hell of a lot LESS sex! Dog owner here: it's really inconsiderate to assume everyone wants to play with your dog. Some kids are terrified of dogs, and others are allergic. Also there are rules prohibiting dogs from NYC playgrounds. If a child approaches my leashed dog I will warn them "she won't bite, but she will jump up and lick your face". My dog is only 25 lbs, but when she stands on her hind legs to lick your face (which we're working on) she towers over a toddler. [ Reply | More ]

People are the WORST! I live in Hoboken - full of young kids and dogs. Idiots bring small dogs into the fenced playgrounds all the time. Bigger idiots bring young kids into the dog runs all. the. time. I have 2 young kids and a pitbull mutt (rescued / abused as a puppy). Now - my dog is very skittish (doesn't like strangers touching him) - but good w/ kids. I know tons of dogs that are not though. Kids are on their level and move erratically - dogs can get confused -see them as a threat. I try to MMOB - but I've left the dog park more than once when children go in - I don't need that liability even though I know my dog wouldn't hurt a fly. [ Reply | More ]
