Depends on the school. It used to just be a high school activity but now many Middle Schools offer it as well though sometimes with different format than the high school version. As far as the time commitment it also depends. Some have as a class and those are usually the very competitive teams that travel quite a bit to national circuit tournaments. Others may offer it as an afterschool club and mostly go to local Saturday tournaments. [ Reply | More ]

Regularly hanging out in 8-30m apartments, weekend houses, etc. it’s just very new to me as I’ve lived in the city for 20+ years but my friends were in shared 1 bedrooms. I had my wisdom teeth pulled as a teen and the blood and saliva mixed together and I drooled over my white sheets. I woke up and it was nearly entirely red. Yes, not for me but for DC. It is horrible. Went down the road of it is “psychological”, “conversion disorder”, you need “family therapy”, all to end up with a rare diagnosis at leading children’s hospital far from NYC. It happens a lot with patients who have rare diseases or complex diagnoses, the ones who are “zebras” and not “horses”. I will never view medicine and the arrogance of many doctors the same way. Thankfully, there are a few gems who truly listen to their patients and are conscientious enough to dig further. [ Reply | More ]

Also the case for patients who have new diseases that get discovered or defined, often thanks to genetic sequencing. Knowledge expands all the time. It is virtually impossible for doctors to keep up, but they should at least have the humility to admit they don’t know rather than treat you as if you are a crazy person. [ Reply | More ]

I would probably broach the subject carefully. Like, "Linda, have you heard about (or noticed) anything going on with the girls? Annie has been saying that she and Lucy aren't getting along as well and I'm trying to figure out what's going on and how we can help them resolve it." She'll either give you some information (Yes, Lucy said that Annie has been avoiding her on the bus and at lunch.") or she'll have nothing. Either way, you can say that you've been hearing from Annie that Lucy seems angry and give her some examples. I would avoid use of the word "bullying" since it's inflammatory and I would try to approach it as a problem to solve, not an accusation against her DD. A lot of young kids can behave like jerks, but they aren't necessarily bullies. They are angry or hurt about something and are looking for a way to communicate. Be open to the possibility that your DD may not be innocent. [ Reply | More ]

I get what you are saying and I am trying to be very open. I agree I should not use the word "bullying". OR-If this is the case, you don't have a lot to work with. If you want to salvage the friendship, try to talk to her in an as non-accusatory way as possible. That doesn't mean that you allow your dd to be mistreated. I'm just saying that the more defensive she is, the more likely it is to go badly. Some parents just can't see their own kids' faults and if that's the case here, it may be the end of the road. [ Reply | More ]

This is perfect advice. My dd was having a lot of issues with a friend that we were friendly with the parents. I debated back and forth about bringing it up but decided not to. I thought it was important that my DD try to work it out herself first. But when the other Mom and I were out to dinner in a group she said to me " Susie was upset that Sally has been really mean to her lately." I was shocked and honestly a bit pissed that I hadn't said anything and now she was bringing it up when my DD, who is very shy, finally opened her mouth back. In the end, I realized that the kids truly only see their own side of an issue and you should never go aggressively at a parent- What the above poster, wrote was perfect. Your child is almost never as innocent as you think they are although they truly believe their point of view. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry. If you are truly friends (not acquaintances), I would be very direct with the mother. "I'm sorry to tell you some disturbing things have been going on between Jane and DD and DD. This behavior has to stop. Jane needs to stay away from DD." See where that gets you. Frankly, the mother's response will tell you how good of friends you are. If she protests, repeat that it needs to stop and you will get the school involved. [ Reply | More ]

Speak to the classroom teacher/teachers. Be very specific that the other girl is pushing and being physical with your dd on a regular basis. Be calm and reasonable (i.e. problem can't be solved overnight) but if teachers provide excuses for how they can't do anything, do not be afraid to escalate to the principal. Even if she is not being injured, this girl should not have license to be physical with her, in any way, and the "shove it up your ass" comment is not just bitchy, it is meant to be intimidating. Considering what you said about the mom defending the dd's behavior, I would not try to bring it up with her. I think you need to resign yourself that the friendship with the parents is going to end soon, and that's okay - write it off. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] This is a really strange question but I am hoping someone can help. We put an offer in on an apartment right before I got pregnant. I initially really liked it. Then I got pregnant and got extremely nauseous pretty much right away. We made lots of visits to the new apartment for measurements, etc and with each visit i was obviously very nauseous and it was unoccupied so it was also musty which I'm sure didn't help. We closed about a week ago and we are moving in 2 weeks- but taking small trips just about every day to bring over books, clothing, etc. I'm still very nauseous. Now- the problem- looking at the apartment or even THINKING about it causes my nausea to come on in full force. Even typing this out, imagining the apartment in my head, my nausea is starting to rage. It's like a pregnancy food aversion but it's an aversion to our new apartment. Obviously this is something I need to get over since we freaking own it and are going to live there for a long time. Please, can anyone help me??? Any similar experience and reassurance that once my nausea subsides in a few weeks hopefully, this aversion will subside too??? I'm honestly nervous it won't. I can't even get excited about this apartment because it makes me nauseous to even think about it. 28 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We did this weekend, when the weather was crisp, yes. But I don't think it's just the smell- I think it's because I just associate the apartment with pregnancy nausea since I've basically never been in the apartment without being sick to my stomach other than the first time i visited it, before we put in the offer. It's truly like i tried a new food when pregnant, got nauseous, and now have a food aversion but am being forced to eat the food every day. I need to get over it but I can't. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you- I really, really hope so. I'm 10 weeks so hopefully by the time we move i'll be feeling a little better. My husband agreed to push it to 4 weeks if I really need to although I know he thinks I'm being crazy. It would be another month of rent we need to pay on our current place but honestly I'm willing to suck it up. [ Reply | More ]

I'm also thinking of painting all the rooms even though I like the paint that's already there.... just to make it look different... and buying different furniture than I'd planned on buying just to give it a look that I haven't been imagining. I feel like such a crazy person but I am worried that i just really hate this apartment that, in theory, I loved when I first saw. [ Reply | More ]

for at time, oranges made me nauseous. then seeing them made me nauseous. then anything the COLOR orange made me sick. I was so weird and it lifted - immediately -- when baby was born and I, weirdly, asked DH to get me an orange soda. pregnancy is crazy. get the place painted and floors done before you move in -- but I say that to anyone moving. it's impossible to do the floors once you're there [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. I think we will do all of the above. Just glancing at a picture of it this morning make me almost vomit. I'm like, I want to live anywhere BUT there. But it's a little late. [ Reply | More ]

Wear a rubber band around your wrist for a few days and snap it whenever you feel the apartment nausea coming on. Each evening, get into a super relaxed state and meditate, taking deep breaths, picturing the apartment then have it fading into something fresh and relaxing and calming, like a beach or a meadow, then fading back into the apartment, back and forth. Breathe deeply, from the diaphragm, and focus on moving that stimulated feeling from your throat down into your abdomen, and then dissolving it with the contraction/expansion of your diaphragm. I think you now have anxiety-triggered nausea around the apartment. The only thing that will work is exposure therapy. Go slowly and little by little. [ Reply | More ]

Also come up with a reward system for yourself for exposure...focus on that. Like: I get to go have a piece of cake right after. etc. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure that's part of it- the move is making me anxious in general (normal) and exacerbates everything. Just talking it out on here makes me feel a little less crazy and gives me hope it will subside so I really appreciate the responses. [ Reply | More ]

It's silly until I nearly vomit every time i think about my new home or walk through the front door after spending so much money!!! And yes I'm going to consider therapy if it doesn't resolve. [ Reply | More ]

Is this your first pregnancy? The aversions are insanely strong and then they pass. I know this sounds cruel but when I was pregnant and say, eating in a restaurant, the sight of an obese person would nauseate me. I would have to turn my chair to face away. This happened multiple times. Many other aversions that also nauseated me too. Your senses are so heightened. Of course now that the pregnancy is long over all those reactions seem like looney tunes but I still remember how visceral they were. I think it will be fine long term. The imagery sound one recommended sounds good. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks- it's not my first, although some of the aversions from my first stuck with me which is what's making me paranoid that this aversion to the house will stick with me too, but I know it's unlikely. I'm actually having big regrets about the purchase and I am assuming/hoping it's just the pregnancy talking. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Are sororities as bad as I think they are? My view of fraternities (as sexist and basically existing for partying and sex) may be tainting my view, but I wonder if sororities basically exist to fulfill men's fantasies (for easy sex) or if there's more to it. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I was in a sorority in college. I didn't join until sophomore year. I really liked it. I didn't like the singing and clapping during rush. But everything else was good. Lots of fun people. Some community service stuff I wouldn't have initiated on my own. Sure there were parties, but no serious debauchery. I never felt unsafe, nor was I assaulted. I think it just is a case by case basis type of thing. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. Tell me I'm wrong that it's just an orgy of random, alcohol-fueled sex...or if I'm right, just give it to me straight. DD wants to join a sorority (if that wasn't obvious) and I'm against it. [ Reply | More ]

I went to a college that was very heavy on greek life so most girls joined a sorority (like 70%). You just joined the same one all your friends joined and it was basically an excuse to hang out with your friends and have parties with your guy friends in your "brother" fraternity. That being said- I do think it bred a lot of exclusion uneccessarily, because girls I had been friends with before rushing (we couldn't rush until 2nd semester) basically stopped being my friends once we joined different sororities just because "oh well it's a Alpha Chi thing to have drinks at Kristin's tonight so you can't come... I'm sorry!" and it was just stupid exclusionary stuff like that. In retrospect I'd have preferred going to a school with minimal greek life. [ Reply | More ]

Poster above you. My school was a newer university and for some reason they didn't build actual fraternity houses. Because of this, I think there was a lot less hanging out 'just in your house.' We all had friends in all different houses. I think that actually made the greek system a bit better. [ Reply | More ]

i went to a very big school and the sorority was a good way to make it seem smaller. even if you weren’t friends with everyone at least you’d see some familiar faces around campus or you could contact an older sister for advice about a class or something. there was partying but isn’t that how it is st most colleges with or without greek life [ Reply | More ]

Are you really so dumb that you think all sororities are the same everywhere? I was in one, I had a blast and made great friends. It was very empowering to be part of an organization that very much encouraged me to excel in school. There were girls in my pledge class who were at college to have fun and meet a husband, there were far more girls who were very serious students and have excelled in their chosen profession since college. In my pledge class there are several women who became doctors, lawyers, accountants, two architects, and a few who have excellent careers in advertising. The most peer pressure I felt from my sorority sisters was to get really good grades so we would have the highest gpa of all Greek organizations on campus. I did not attend a single alcohol fueled orgy, was never sexually assaulted by a fraternity guy. [ Reply | More ]
