[ - ] What do you do with a kid like this: dd, 12, gets good grades (honor roll), strong in math but lacks motivation and hates school, is obsessively artistic. In what direction would you guide a kid like this? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You are very invested in this. Unless the person just graduated college, a 1 page software developer resume is unheard of. 8 is certainly at the high end but I see 5+ every single day. It isn't a high level resume like for an executive. It is very tactical and lists very discrete skills. The section where they write what environment they have worked in at each job is at least two lines. I don't care what your brother thinks or what you think. I am just reporting what I see every day in my job. [ Reply | More ]

No one truly reads a resume in tech. But their recruiters run resumes through a keyword search for specific words and look at the names of the companies listed so you can go to whoever at your company used to work there and you say "We're looking at someone from Old Company. Uh, not really--I'd be getting a $15 beet salad and a $12 glass of wine where they'd be getting a $27 steak or seared tuna or whatever. And maybe an app or dessert. And then that person will whine about not drinking and opt out of their share, and I'll pay mine. The difference is probably about $5-$10--if that's really breaking you, maybe you should eat at home. Not as uncommon as you might think. In a group of 7 women friends, there was a stretch of about 10 years when at least one of us was pregnant at any given time. For 10 years, whenever we went out to dinner, someone wasn't drinking. My father-in-law has been sober for 20+ years. If I know there is a non-drinker in the group, I simply ask that the alcohol be put on a separate tab from the food and the non-drinker doesn't pay that part of the bill. It's not that hard. I HATE this whole ordeal. I just tell the waiter ahead of time that we'll be getting separate checks. I know it's a PITA, but so is sitting around calculating our bills for like 45 minutes after the meal is done because there are ALWAYS differing opinions on the "most fair" way to do it. And handing the waiter like 9 cards and saying "split it 9 ways!" or "here is a list of how much money will go on each card!" is just as much of a PITA as just saying right up front "we are all on separate tabs". If it's a massive boozy dinner then no, but I also wouldn't itemize the bill or anything. If they are delaying next year's contracts to be sure that they have money to operate, then you should get out asap. [ Reply | More ]

They always wait until the last minute to renew contracts. I know of a great job I could apply for now. I might just do it. I’m worried I’ll be screwed next summer and we usually go away for the summer. [ Reply | More ]

I wish I knew more about the financial security or lack thereof. I also put a ton into my 403b. Should I scale that back to have more liquid savings? [ Reply | More ]

Do whatever works for you for the 403b. I don’t know your financial situation so I wouldn’t know whether to tell you to scale back or not. I really would not wait to see if the school falls flat on its face. I have been teaching for almost 20 years. I was at one school for 10 years and then left one school because they were on the verge of closing. Now I am at school that is stable but the president is a bit crazy so that might be the only reason in the future that I may have to look elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]

Do you need the entire day for an interview? Can you get someone to cover your classes just for the morning or just for the afternoon? Or can you leave a little early? Or schedule interviews for 4pm? [ Reply | More ]

I might be able to take half days for sick days but can’t do hourly. Most interviews are far and often not scheduled after 4. I work until 4:30. If I knew Obamacare weren’t going to disappear I could get by just doing private tutoring. [ Reply | More ]

But wouldn't it be easier to leave early (after the students leave but before 4:30) so you could get somewhere by 4pm? [ Reply | More ]

I’d have to use a half sick day. I guess I can’t interview until after Xmas though so nothing I can do now but worry and save. [ Reply | More ]

Apply. You're just applying, it doesn't commit you to anything nor does it guarantee an offer. Don't worry about next summer yet: if you get the job, you can ask for a reasonable amount of time off next summer when you negotiate salary, etc., AND missing 'usually go away for the summer' for a better job is a reasonable tradeoff. If you don't feel that way, then you stick with your current job. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Morning re-post: Hosting 8 yo DS's birthday party at a park this evening and it's going to be hot (upper 90's). Can't change venues and no water source at park. Ideas for keeping guests cool? Planning on: water balloons (or water canons?); 5 gal. jug of water and a bunch of sponges (to dip in water and throw around), spray bottles for misting, cool drinks. Plenty of shade. Is that enough? Other ideas? TIA! 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] Friend rented beach house and invited several others. I am appreciative but she needs to unclench. Nitpicking everything, super annoyed by 2 and 4yo cousins (normal behavior for that age), venting about everyone in house. We are on eggshells. Would you leave early, stay out of house as much as possible? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I would stay out of house as much as possible, but also not vacation with them again unless you can stay in separate places. This is why group vacations where you share living quarters don't appeal to me. [ Reply | More ]
