DD had a couple of friends at SHS who had been to MS at Avenues. The consensus was that it had gorgeous facilities and a very unmotivated student body. OTOH, these were kids who were motivated enough to take the SHSAT, so not a perfect sample. [ Reply | More ]

ended up at NEST+M - and then we reconsidered Private for High School but by that point my first only wanted to go to Brooklyn Tech and had very specific and good reasons, his sib was less academic and we considered private again but his sib wanted no part of private. So we let it go - each kid will be starting off post-college life with a couple of million dollars so I guess I am not too worried about their lives - they will be fine if they stay of drugs and keep following their plans. OR. We have zero connections, are comfortable but not loaded, white, boring. DC is at TT and also nailed the SB test. I believe the process is more fair at the serious schools. I have case A and begrudged it for a long time because DH is terrible w kids and has no patience for them. But for my kids, it's been the best path. They've both required special care, which I wouldn't have been able to give if I were not at home. You were disappointed because in Manhattan everyone considers school admissions to be a reflection on our status as parents. Either people assume your kids are lacking, or they openly conclude that you didn't have enough clout or connections to get in. Getting into Spence is like a bat signal that you're connected; getting into Hunter signals that you are good parents. Sending your kids to any other schools signals that you're not part of the club. um, I agree with the theory of what you're saying but the list of schools that makes people feel connected or accepted or "TT" is hardly limited to Spence and Hunter. Some parents would never even consider Hunter (though I would have sent DD there if she had gotten in). [ Reply | More ]

My dad was a college marching band director. My mom was a HS music teacher. DH and I are lawyers. We have a much larger HHI but I kind of miss the creativity that's born from not having a whole lot of disposable income. And I kind of miss those band competitions. As a kid they thrilled me. I am first gen American and we have no extended family in America. We spent many Thanksgivings at a Marriott in New Jersey which always housed at least one, large high school marching band post the parade. I’d wind up swimming w these kids who, at the time, seemed so grown up to me. [ Reply | More ]

Dad managed a chain of local retail stores and after they folded became a furniture salesman and then went back to college and became an IT specialist. My parent divorced, dad was laid off and is now a school bus driver. Mom was a sah until she went back to school and worked for the Chamber of Commerce and then the federal government. I sah and have for 11 years, DH is in finance. We live a completely different life, "up" by all measures. [ Reply | More ]

Mom - SAHM, Dad - investment banker. I’d say I’ve moved down but we’ve made different career choices to make time for family and have more flexibility. We’re definitely comfortable but we’ll never be able to buy a second home on Martha’s Vineyard or put two kids through private school (without giving up a lot). It’s okay. I’m happy with what we have. [ Reply | More ]

It varies from school to school. The top schools weed out the rejects based on the playdate/interview and highlight who they think the superstars are, then cross check against the school report. There are always seats set aside for the very wealthy, famous and connected, but there is less of that at the better, more academic schools. [ Reply | More ]

The more academic schools are filled with the wealthy, famous, and well connected as well (at least half the class, more like 2/3). They just weed out the weaker students in lower/middle school and bring in less wealthy outstanding students in middle/upper school. [ Reply | More ]
