NP Mom of 4 from above: Of course throwing anything new and slightly unpredictable into the mix is going a logistical nightmare at first but (at least in my case) once you master having two kids, the third is just happy to be there. There's never a "good time" to have a third. Ever. But at least you have 9 months to figure out the logistics before the child arrives. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, Stuy is absolutely more prestigious but the workload his friend's parents are describing is much more than my son has, BK Tech is plenty prestigious and the amount of homework he gets it very manageable which affords him time for extra-curriculas which he enjoys. I secretely tried to nudge him to Stuy but I am glad he resisted. Brooklyn tech is huge, there is no way around that - the flip side of that is the scale lets the school offer lots of specialized programs. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if you can compare them like that. Look at the courses available. Tech has a software engineering major which is somewhat specific compared to stuy's more general computer science courses. You will see what I mean when you look. Tour both and ask questions. Stuy has consistently stronger students than tech, but it is easier to get a high gpa at tech without killing yourself. [ Reply | More ]

I hear this all the time! People discount tech because the entrance score is the lowest of the other schools. He just never connected with anyone and didn't feel like he belonged. that changed junior year and now he's happy enough. np - National high school rankings mean nothing. Read their methodology and see if you agree with them. A large percentage of their ranking is based on percentage of seniors who took AP tests - it doesn't matter what SCORE they received on it - just that they took it. So 100% taking AP tests, even if they all fail, means that that HS ranks higher than a HS where 50% take AP tests and score a 4 or 5 on all of them. [ Reply | More ]

Actually I'd say the opposite. It's a misnomer to think that these kids move without rules. In fact they have to master things to move on. At the one where I taught kids were not given complete freedom. And artistic interest was not at all considered during play periods. [ Reply | More ]

Perhaps you are right, I just know that it works for my nephew. He lives abroad and it’s either public schools that are traditional, strict and rigid, or private montessory. There are no public progressives. My dc was in both progressive and traditional schools, and we by far preferred progressive. Traditional was making dc too timid and insecure. Teachers yelled and infirced rules for the sake of rules all the time and that made my well behaved dc scared and reserved. We had to move dc to a progressive school and it was a perfect fit for a well behaved happy dc. [ Reply | More ]

My kids went to a Montessori which is traditional but no “strict”. There was a lot of playtime. Their manners are excellent because “grace and courtesy” is emphasized and it is really nice to see that translate meaningfully in behavior of 3 and 4 year olds. They also really liked “practical life” lessons like cooking and folding laundry—this would not be happening a a regular daycare but it clearly resonated w/ my kids. [ Reply | More ]

re provincial: I think children are provincial for sure, but in some ways I think it's a good thing. They're less hardened and jaded. In other ways: very homogeneous and unfamiliar that there's a world outside of suburbia. We travel a LOT to different places and cultures so DS is exposed to that much, but it certainly doesn't compensate. [ Reply | More ]

More like, the admissions process is not geared towards producing the most impressive exmissions, which is what I get from the more elite option. I feel like A is all reputation/money and not much effort spent on studying education [ Reply | More ]

College is irrelevant, and what I mean by that is Harvard vs Georgetown or Middlebury makes no difference in the long run. However, 13 years of being surrounded by smart peers in the formative years versus the burb sport-obsessed jocks is very important imo. I choose A. Pressure cookers are fine for smart kids. I forced my family to move from Brooklyn to B and regret it. Lack of diversity is real. I feel marooned. Now resent DH who works in the city and often does fun things w/ friends that don't make sense for me. It's not exactly Trumpy here (Westchester), but it is fairly republican and they see me (a moderate in Brooklyn) as a left winger. Moms here are all drunks. [ Reply | More ]

They were great. I had a blast with the group I traveled with in Kenya. They were all from England. There were 6 of us in a van and we got along really well. I had a free first class airplane ticket to anywhere in the world due to a major mess up during an international business trip and I decided to go on safari. A woman in my department was from Kenya and she hooked me up with her mother who ran a travel agency in Nairobi. She put me on a tour once I arrived. It was so much fun. My roommate was a woman from Yorkshire. She was really nice. In Egypt, I was paired with a really interesting woman from Zimbabwe. Great life experiences! [ Reply | More ]
