People have very short historical memories. If you ask most people to describe the decade before they were born, they will be way off. Most people just can't conceive of a complex, real world that existed before they were born, and they believe (or even think up) fictions that make their life and lifetime seem more complex/real/dramatic/worthwhile/turbulent/scary/advanced/difficult/colorful. I we t o public schools in the 60s and 70s, graduating from HS in 1978. I remember saying the pledge of allegiance in elementary school. We moved when I was in 5th grade and I do not recall saying it at the new school or any time after that, so it stopped around 1970. [ Reply | More ]

Take it out of cart. Price will drop. Amazon is such a scam. I use Amazon search engine to find products, then buy them on eBay. Tonight, I found an item I wanted on Amazon for $12, then bought it on eBay for $3, free shipping. Usually, eBay is 1/3 cheaper, consistently, exactly the same name brand item. And no sales tax on eBay. [ Reply | More ]

I usually get the opposite. If I leave items in my cart or wishlist, the price always seems to go down. But I think it's just whatever we notice. Amazon is a massive system. [ Reply | More ]

Prices fluctuate—sometimes greatly. Doesn't matter if it’s in your cart or not. I use camelcamelcamel.com to track historical prices and set notifications when the price hits my set strike price. You have to act fast one you get notification, as the deal could end at any moment or has already ended. [ Reply | More ]

We were not married but serious, found out when the 21 year old psycho he was cheating with broke into his house to confront me, she knew I had a key and was there waiting for him. I sent letters to his ex he had a kid with, and his previous very serious gf that he'd lived with at the bar she worked at, told them they should get checked for std's. Crazy or not it felt so fucking good, I still smile about it and I'm 47, hehe. I wanted carnage. We were very serious, good friends before we were a couple, such a betrayal. [ Reply | More ]

Does he work a lot more than you? If he comes home late from Wolf a lot, start keeping a record of what time he gets home from Work versus what time you get home from Work. Establish yourself as the primary parent. Problem is that if he fights you, it will be horribly expensive (it could be $500k+ in legal fees) and he could well end up with almost 50 percent. If you have been married more than 5 years, you may get some alimony, but that seems unlikely to be a lot. If he makes $500k+, you’re likely to get $7k+ per month in child support. I would think pretty hard about whether you want to do this. If he is emotionally abusive and won’t change, then you need out. But if there is a way to work through the problem, that might be a lot less hairy than fighting this out in court. Also, since you want him out of the apartment, I would expect it to take a year of fighting in Couurt before he is out. That will suck. Sorry to say this, but get ready. [ Reply | More ]

Alessandro Negrete, a 35-year-old immigrant who is in the country without legal status, is tired of the spotlight on DACA recipients. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) Ever since Sam Paredes crossed into the U.S. illegally from Mexico nearly 30 years ago, he followed a simple philosophy of keeping his head down and trying to stay out of trouble. The 39-year-old put in long hours for little pay as an office manager at a clothing wholesaler. He paid his taxes and hoped that after many years of waiting, there would come an immigration reform that would grant him a pathway to becoming an American citizen. [ Reply | More ]

But one glimmer of hope afforded many young immigrants escaped him: Because the New York resident came too long ago, he did not qualify for immigration relief under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, better known as DACA. Now he watches as the White House and Congress continue to grapple and negotiate and argue — but at least talk about — the future of the so-called Dreamers. [ Reply | More ]

2) Housing prices are very expensive compared to the past. This has largely been due to a 30 year bull super cycle in asset prices. Baby boomers have really benefited from having bought homes when cheap in the 1980s, and reaped hundreds of percent returns. You have 60 year old plumbers living in $5 million+ homes in Palo Alto. They have no reason to move, because the home is paid off and property taxes in CA are basically zero. But that drives up the cost for millennial looking to buy their first home. They didn’t participate in this massive creation of wealth. And likely they never will, because interest rates and property taxes can only go up from here. On top of all that you have boomer run local governments, that tightly constrain supply by putting land use restrictions in virtually every good job market. That hugely benefits 50+ year old homeowners, but screws millennials looking for affordable family formation. 3) For better or worse, white people really don’t want their kids going to NAM-majority schools. NAMs make up over 50% of new births now. That means that living in the median school district is no longer an option. In 1980, most school districts were good enough. In 2017, you have to live at the upper end of the housing market to provide an acceptable school for your kid. Combined with the inflated price of housing, this really drives the screws in to new young parents. [ Reply | More ]

Eh. I hear you and I'm in that weird Gen X/millenial border group, so I'm well aware of the benefits boomers had over all of us. But with CA - the young people moving here are all ambitious strivers so I don't feel too bad for them. That plumber? First of all he's probably living in a $2-3MM house not a $5MM house. And said house is maaaaaybe a 500k house outside of SF/LA/NY. Why on earth should he have to move to make room for millenials who want to sell their souls to tech companies? Sorry bit any millenial moving her who didn't grow up in the area is doing so due to greed and hoping to cash in on the bs tech bubble. Why should we feel bad for them when there are so many other places to make roots? [ Reply | More ]

Millennials in the bay area believe they are entitled to the very best from the very beginning. They won’t consider living in a 40 year old apartment in the crappy part of town to save money, they will only go for the brand new construction in the “cool” part of town for twice the price – and then proceed to complain about how expensive their downtown loft is. They won't consider buying a 1 bedroom condo in San Mateo as a first home, they believe that upon college graduation they should be able to move into a 4-bedroom house in Palo Alto. [ Reply | More ]

I think you would need to know the full story before complaining. And put it this way - a few weeks ago at my son's school a child had an accidental peanut exposure, went into anaphylaxis and the school handled it really badly. Yesterday at school pickup there were ambulances, because another child had had a reaction and the school had handled it perfectly. People learn from mistakes, so would you rather be in a school that has learned its lesson or one that has never encountered it? [ Reply | More ]

you were not asking whether they did anything wrong or not, you were asking whether you would transfer your child or not. I answered that I would rather be in a school that has learned its lesson (if there is indeed a lesson to be learned in this situation) [ Reply | More ]

One would only hope that they learned a lesson and thankfully not at the expense of any children. Thank God. Still doesn't make anyone feel comfortable knowing how incompetent they were when we needed them the most. [ Reply | More ]

I know the full story. Parent who has limited access to the school along with several arrests & an order of protection filed by a teacher--walked into the school, was escorted out by security & threatend to come back and shoot everyone. Principal called the police but did no lock down. Let kids & field trip leave the building immediately after. THEN waited 2 full days to send home communication about a threat but ---put the letter in kids homework folders, so kids read the letter before seeing their parents. [ Reply | More ]

what a terrible response. to essential inform children of a potential safety threat BEFORE the parents. Such a terrible choice of action, i would be scared for them to be "leading" the school community. [ Reply | More ]

They caught the guy. A few days ago he faced the judge who decides if he has to stay away from the school for a period of time. Also they have patrol cars circling the school during drop off, recess and pick up. Police will send in more reinforcement on 2/26. [ Reply | More ]

So he faces judge but then gets to go free, correct? This guy already violated access to the school, what is to stop him from doing it again? Stay away from the school, he lives on the same block.... [ Reply | More ]

This school is a shit-show! Anyone with a choice should steer clear. More rigorous than your GenED but definitely not worth the problems. Better to do enrichment after school. [ Reply | More ]

I think highly of the teachers, G&T parents, pta and the kids. My kids like this school. I don't have a great zone option. The zone school will prob have openings in ict classes only. That would be too drastic of peer change mid year. [ Reply | More ]

Perhaps and I am torn but my child's life & safety trumps any other minor inconvenience. At this point, she is coasting to the end and there is little learning. All they are doing is prepping for state exams. [ Reply | More ]

Every parent there wants more security and better procedures/ protocols in place. A lot of us don't know what we should do and how to start. Can pta send out a list of people or departments we should call? Can it also be on the pta website? Can we find groups who have successfully brought better security measures to their schools? [ - ] I am not having an easy time financially these days. People keep telling me about all their awesome ski trips and other trips and are constantly asking me what I am planning to to do for XY vacation Frankly, I don’t know what to say so I would rather not even meet anyone. If they tell me about their stuff, I smile and nod but I have nothing to contribute. Oh well... 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Maybe they don't realize how you feel. I wouldn't assume that they are trying to make you uncomfortable. Besides, you don't owe anyone an explanation. Just say, "We're still figuring out our plans" or "Sometimes we just like to stay close to home, so we might not do any big trips this year" or whatever. Honestly, we have money to travel, but that doesn't mean we always have a trip planned for every break. [ Reply | More ]
