maybe keratosis pilaris - which is genetic and for which there really isn't treatment. I had it and so does my dd. Mine went away in my mid-30's, for the most part. Can also appear on the cheeks. wikipedia has an entry on it or just google it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I thought of this but we were told that we can't do sugary treats like cupcakes for the class (we also have to do snack for one week out of the year). But I didn't ask specifically about the birthday thing - duh. I will ask the school ;-) [ Reply | More ]

If it's September of the first year, I would probably just invite her "old" friends--ie no one from school. It's the last year you'll be able to do that. The school etiquette is generally all or none. I wouldn't invite just a few kids from preschool. [ Reply | More ]

OP: We actually moved and relocated to a new city a week ago, so most of her "old" friends are in our old city. Thinking about maybe inviting everyone to encourage relationship here? [ Reply | More ]

In that case, great idea! We went to a bday party the first month of ds's preschool and it was a nice mixer for the parents as well. You'll probably get to know people from it too. [ Reply | More ]

That's my hope :-) See below - we have tended to do relatively "big" things for her because we enjoy it - would you think about being more restrained in this situation or just do whatever we want? [ Reply | More ]

Do whatever you want. I would have it at home and have wine/snacks for the adults. IME, parents are really curious about each other and eager to mingle the first couple of months of preschool. It's a big deal for everyone. It'll be great--have fun! And congrats on your move. [ Reply | More ]

yes invite the whole class if you have a party and want to invite some classmates. Our preschool has a policy to not leave out any of the kids since kids talk and others will be hurt by it. BTW not once did the entire class come to our party [ Reply | More ]

invite all or none. It's tough because she most likely will have the first bday and you will be setting the precedent. Personally, I would skip the bday party this year. No one is going to expect it 2 weeks into the school year. [ Reply | More ]

I would give yourself a break. New city, new school, etc. She is three. She isn't going to realize she is missing anything. If others in school have a bday party, she may ask about it later in the year and you can tell her "next year" and she can help plan it, have the summer to look forward to it, and will actually know the dc that come. ITD. Our ds's 3rd bday party was a highlight of his year. It's a big deal for them at that age, and easy enough to do. It'll help make the transition (both to school and to the new city) easier on OP's dd. [ Reply | More ]

not frightened. dh has a relatively secure job. i have mixed feelings aobut the economy. on the one hand, we are being squeezed by higher prices.
