[ - ] My DD was accepted to PS 158 pre-k program. This is our local school so she may be going for K next year. She's currently attending a private school nursury program and we are torn whether to move her. Any opinions on the quality of the program vs. the average private pre-k on UES? ALso does attending public pre-k hurt my DD chances of getting into a private K program? The $15K savings would be nice, but I want to do what is best for her. 19 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

No opinion on how it affects chances of getting into private K, but my friends who have done public pre-K in other schools (9, 87) have been very happy. If the pre-K at ds's zoned elementary school was half-day and we had gotten in, I definitely would have sent him. I didn't think he was ready for full-day, full time though. [ Reply | More ]

we never considered private as an option, but we kept dd in preschool during what would have been her pre-K year. In retrospect, I regret it because most of the other parents chose to put their kids in pre-K and dd ended up being one of just a handful of 4yos who stayed and was placed with mostly 3 yos. My point is not that kids should be placed in a school they aren't qualified for. My point is more that if the point of a sibling policy is to keep the kids in the same community & to make it easy on families, then why extend that policy only to SOME families and not to others? So - sib policy for schools with a mission to educate all kinds of kids and no sib policy for selective schools. [ Reply | More ]

many families are ok with this, and do it on purpose even. Almost all public school families have kids in different schools at several points because you move from one to the next. I think that when you start making the G&T testing more accessible to children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, you will probably start finding more and more students attending city-wides from the outer boroughs, and more families struggling to make the commute for their children. The fact that the DOE is recognizing how difficult it might be for families to have children in school in different boroughs will start breaking the class barriers that have denied so many poor gifted children a decent education. Therefore, the sibling policy is friendly to families of poorer children commuting in from Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens. Also, many of these families are not able to afford a nanny to pick up child #2 at another school. Additionally, the DOE is not giving priority to siblings who don't qualify for Nest, TAG or Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

The city-wides are reserved for students scoring above the 97th percentile. The DOE will spots for siblings scoring above the 97th for Anderson before the rest of the 99s are given admission. From my understanding, very few siblings qualified. I'm not sure why people are attacking the policy. Keep families together. It's better for the kids and the schools. Families with more than 1 kid in a school tend to contribute more and do more work for the school. [ Reply | More ]
