[ - ] one thing puzzles me about people who lie about their address to get their kid into a good school, esp. if it's in a totally different neighborhood/borough: what do they tell their kids?? do they coach them to lie and say they live on XYZ Street? (i know my ds would totally not be able to lie like this...) 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

In all honesty - no one asks a child their address in K. It's not something that comes up. [ Reply | More ]

But in the upper grades it can happen, and the DOE will track back to see if you were really living at x address when you first enrolled. They don't have time to properly place students, but they do seem to have time for that. [ Reply | More ]

No, because D3 schools used to be able to accept kids from all over. Now it's changed and they are very tight on zoning. Don't rely on what people "used" to pull off. Any kids starting at a new school this year, at any elementary grade level...there is a good chance you will be caught if you lie, even though in the past it was pretty easy. [ Reply | More ]

No, it's as simple as them mailing you a letter. If it comes back to them or if they get a forwarding notice, they will investigate. For whatever reason they are getting very pissy about it this year. This coming from our UPK director, who is constantly asking people for more paperwork. [ Reply | More ]

True. That's why for the D3 lottery, you needed to bring in the letter they sent you in order to register. It was another way of checking if you live where you say you do. [ Reply | More ]

lolol. We are at D3 school and don't have address on file for a bunch of kids, several of them not living in Manhattan at all. Nobody is investigating. [ Reply | More ]

As I said, rules used to be laxer. They are cracking down on 08 admissions. Also, kids are always allowed to move out of zone--or out of district--once they complete K. So many will have outside addresses later on. But for this year's K, you run a much bigger chance that you will be caught if you lie. [ Reply | More ]

exactly. People don't seem to realize that once you start in first grade at a school - you are allowed to move out of the zone and stay in the school. [ Reply | More ]

i think it totally depends on the "route." Some buses stop at numerous schools, others at just a few, or just one. If the bus picks her up, and the first school stop is her school, then great. If that is not the case, then it depends. See if you can verify the route and stops. [ Reply | More ]

Is your child just starting the school? I would try to not use a bus if at all possible, at least in the beginning. I think going to school with your child can open all kinds of conversations and will give more of an opportunity for you to meet other parents and children. Are parents allowed in the classroom in the morning? You can read to your child or they may point out things they are excited about in the classroom. I'm a single, working mom, so I know how hard it can be, but I think the experience of accompanying your young child to school can be a really important one. [ Reply | More ]

for a short ride and if the dc is already used to going to school, I would say it's ok but I wouldn't do it for a long ride. This is the reason why we didn't apply to uptown schools since we are in the LES. My dc would be the first to be picked up and last to be dropped off. Too long on the bus at 5yr [ Reply | More ]

thousands of kindergarteners do it in NYC every year, including my own. Unless your child is especially anxious, I think it is not only fine, but can be a great experience. My dd never would have known any older kids without the bus. She was always thrilled at seeing the older kids around the school bldg -- it made her feel important, or special. And there was another K girl on her bus and they became fast best friends, which was an added bonus. [ Reply | More ]

They were 14 1/2 years old and they peed and pooped everywhere (out of spite--they were checked out and were healthy.)
