You people know nothing. There are plenty of places. Along Neptune Ave. there's "Totonno's" for pizza, a chinese buffet that's pretty decent because the food turns over fast. There's "Nathan's" and other restuarants along the boardwalk. Next to the Cyclone's stadium there's a bar & grill with outdoor seating that's real kid friendly during the day. [ Reply | More ]

I too think that is wonderful, but on the fip side feel like the media promotes the few exceptional persons with autism and misconstrues the norm. Most children with autism have significant learning disabilities. I have worked with severely involved children whose parents' expectations are framed on these highly spotlighted cases which limits thier ability to see thier individual child. The child then fails twice in the eyes of the parent who can't shape a loving, but realistic expectation of thier childs abilities. I do say set longer term goals high, but set smaller milestones in attainable increments and relish in these achievements. In other words, love the child for who he is, not who you hope he can oneday be. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.21.08, 07:01 PM Flag

OP: I see what you're saying, but I think you're reaching in terms of the parents not being able to love their child for who they are. I know plenty of typical parents who will be more than a little disappointed if their child chooses not to take the path their parent would prefer. [ Reply | More ]

I completely agree. But it is really challenging to explain to a parent that although thier child may have average/ above average intellegence, he needs to be able to attend to and communicate his basic needs in our world. [ Reply | More ]

yes, yes, that's it. even though ds is in a vb program where the ultimate goal will always be expressive speech, I am coming to terms with the fact that he will never have functional speech. BUT, given the right tools, he can communicate functionally, you know? that's why I'm pressuring the school to teach him to type in Kindergarten. It's been a fight, b/c it's not in the school "curriculum" - which is a joke to me, b/c it's an *Individualized* education program, kwim? [ Reply | More ]
