[ - ] Is it just me or are NYC mum's a bit crazy? They seem so competitive in being the best mum. I am originally from Europe and have been away there for 2-3 months, now I am back to the insanity. Some women just speak about their kid and nothing else.. It is not very relaxed. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

i like you! you are so understated: "it is not very relaxed." no, it is not, is it?!? but there are some normal moms out there... it may just take you a while to find them. good luck. [ Reply | More ]

I found one already, I just feel it is a competition on nursing, food, stimulation, toys, gears you name it. It get a bit tiresome I feel. But I try just to ignore it and enjoy my kid. [ Reply | More ]

i think if you find the right people you can form you own circle of normalcy. we send dd to a very low-key preschool (they basically accept all the kids who apply) and the parents there are very normal and low-key as well. so i don't have too much interaction with the nutty moms, except on this board. Thanks. I am not looking forward to start with applying or finding pre schools etc. I have to admit. That's when I miss the kindergarden/pre school system in Europe, so much easier and cheaper. [ Reply | More ]

Most I know, don't have time to hang out with friends when they are home from work. And again, it is also a debate on mothers who work and the one's that are SAHM. I really don't care what other people do, everyone has to do what works best for them. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] anyone take recently potty-trained dc on train or plane? dh will be taking a 4-hour train ride with dd and i'm sure she will be scared to pee in the train bathroom... any ideas? hate to backtrack, but pull-up for the ride? thanks. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I did pull-ups on long car rides in the first few months after dd trained. she rarely peed in them so it didn't cause any kind of regression. [ Reply | More ]

I took dd on a 6-hour plane ride about 2 weeks into potty training, and it went fine. I did put pull-ups on her because I wasn't sure how quickly we'd be able to get to the potty, but she didn't pee in them. I made a great big deal about how exciting it was to use the potty on the airplane and she thought it was great. GL! [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't assume that she'll be scared to pee in the train bathroom, but in case it turns out she is, I would bring a pull up with me. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What is a good time to hold my 2-year-olds birthday party. It's at a facility for about 2 hours on a Saturday. I want to be thoughtful of naptimes and schedules. Do you suggest morning 11-1 or afternoon 3-5? 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Definitely morning. My 2 yo naps from 1-3 usually, so we would have trouble with the afternoon time. (I'm assuming most 2 yo kids also nap in the afternoon.) [ Reply | More ]

Use same precautions you would anywhere. Bali is better than many exotic locales. Lots of high-end western-style tourism. Drink bottled water. Any nice hotel will have pasteurized milk. If you are really nervous, then pack some parmalait or horizon milks--the one that don't have to be refrigerated. (I always traveld with those when ds was little--more for convenience than anything else. No fresh fruits or veggies unless cooked or peeled. I would say even in the nice resorts, just to be safe. Okay for you, but don't risk it with baby. Take a car seat--the roads are a little crazy. There is a large expat (american and british) community in Ubud--if you need a pediatrician for any reason, that's a good place to look. The balinese people are lovely, gentle and kind, and they love children. You'll have a great time. [ Reply | More ]

. . . are lovely, gentle and kind. They love children. You'll have a great time. Also, I would pack some packaged foods that are natural laxatives--pear juice, granola or high fiber bars, etc. I find the long flights to asia constipate my dc. Lots of fluid to try to prevent, but if it happens, it's nice to have something hand that might help . . . Also, ask dr. what your options for anti-malaria pills. Don't know for young children. I've been to Australia and South Africa with DD, once when she was about that age. The flight was not as bad as I expected. My dr. said no sleepy meds, so I didn't do that (but if I did I would test it first and use it on arrival to get them on the new time). I took a small suitcase with toys -- stickers, crayons, an etch-a-sketch, puzzles for the airport -- all new things she had never ever seen before and we played but she slept too. I found the carseat made her too squished on the plane, but my DH preferred the car seat for her so I'm not sure if I would recommend it or not. Otherwise, they give you a belt thing to keep them on your lap/restrained during take off and landing. We walked around the plane for breaks. [ Reply | More ]

-- I'm not sure the water at The Ritz would be a concern? I haven't had issues giving DD milk in other countries but I am not familiar with Bali. They had milk on the plane. I found from these trips the less we move around once we are there the better, b/c the toddlers like habit and familiarity. [ Reply | More ]

You have to really screw up badly, have a clear record of poor performance, in order to get fired while pregnant. Any sophisticated company should know that if they fire you because you are pregnant then it is an employment discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen - and anyone who is fired b/c she is pregnant should definitely get a lawyer ASAP. True, if it is clear that the pg woman was treated the same as other non-pg people in similar situation. but if her new boss just fires her because he doesn't like her and she is pregnant, i think she'd have the grounds for a pg discrimination suit and would probably win. Hopefully he (or the HR dept) knows this and would not fire her while pregnant. [ Reply | More ]
