Write as many adjectives that describe dc on small pieces as you like. Shut your eyes, pick three and see if you can come up with a short description based on that. If it doesn't quite work, remove one of the adjectives and pick another one at random. You'll come up with something surprisingly fast. [ Reply | More ]

agree, but i would say this goes for most school lunches, public or private. I looked at menus on school websites (both public and private) when we were applying. they all looked the same, except privates were more likely to offer salad bar daily. NP. I have friends in the South Orange elementary schools and they are very happy. They really like that the HS is artsy and diverse. The town next door, Millburn has a competitive, highly rated school system. You might like one over the other, both have great commutes for NJ. [ Reply | More ]

Contrary to what you might read on this board, the schools are very good, and they are diverse: racially and socioeconomically. Therefore, their test scores, which are averaged, are lower than those districts that are not diverse. But if you disaggregate by group (white, black, etc.), we do very well.(And my DH and I are ivy grads, so we are discerning, here.) Our eldest went K-12, and is now at a very highly regarded college. Our middle child is a senior, taking 4 AP classes (CHS offers an unusually large number of excellent AP courses), our youngest is a freshman. Plus, music, art, theatre, film, TV, journalism, are all outstanding. Unusual sports are great too: fencing, ultimate frisbee teams are championship, the track team has produced several Olympians. We loved Tuscan elementary and MMS as well. Come and visit, see if it feels right for you. [ Reply | More ]

None taken. The schools are strong, but as described. They don't appear high on anyone's "top schools" list b/c of the lists' methodology, which favors homogeneous (upper middle class white/Asian, or black/Hispanic skim) schools. Apparently the couples you mentioned didn't know where to look to get the real picture. At least the top fifth of the graduating high school class goes to ivy/elite/most competitive tech/art colleges, often more. [ Reply | More ]

there are lots of places like that. but they're not NY in terms of the AMOUNT of diversity, which is impossible. I think college towns in general are more likely to be like this. I live in Chapel Hill, NC, and sort of an extension area, Carrboro has a great hipster feel to it if that's what you like (people dress like they do in Williamsburg). The public schools are top in the country, there are tons of yoga places, some communal areas, the weather is great so lot of outdoor socializing and the highest percentage of PhD's in the country (b/c of nearby Duke, UNC, and Raleigh). It's NOT NY, but it has all of the things you listed. And my impression is there are lots of places like this. Don't you have a particular state or job market in mind, though? [ Reply | More ]

I don't think there is anywhere perfect. Your best bets are Larchmont/Mamaroneck (there is a little town, the high school is remotely diverse, it's a lot of people from the UWS and the commute is good - but taxes are bad), Katonah but I guess outside the little village it is spread out and it's not that diverse, Princeton is cute (restaurant suck), Maplewood/South Orange but the school system may or not be to your liking, Millburn next door has a town and a different school system that may or not be to your liking, and then Westfield, Ridgewood and Summit are nice towns but probably a little snooty and conservative. [ - ] I posted last night in regard to my landlord selling her house in which I am living. She set up four appointments tonight between 5:30 and 8:00 - I was a bit annoyed since I have a 6 year old and an 18 month old which I need to cook dinner for, bathe and put to bed. I mean, come on, 8:00 at night. Do I have any say in when she shows her house (my apartment)? 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes, you do. You probably don't even have to allow her to show it. Check your lease. [ Reply | More ]

NP: OP has no lease (she posted yesterday), which means she's a month-to-month tenant. A landlord does have the right to access the premises to show it in connection with the sale, subject to a requirement to give the tenant prior notice (24 hours is the usual standard for what is considered reasonable). And, while inconvient for the OP, it's reasonable for the landlord to want to show the property in the evenings, which is when prospective tenants are available. [ Reply | More ]

then if I were OP and your landlord won't be more considerate about the times she is showing the apt, I would make sure your dcs are screaming, dirty diapers are lying around and stinking up the place, and toys are strewn around everywhere. [ Reply | More ]

OR: Then the landlord terminates the lease so she can show the property vacant, and OP is on the street 30 days from now. [ Reply | More ]

Even without a lease, I belive you have to give access, but it has to be "reasonable access" including getting a reasonable amount of notice and the chance to limit the hours somewhat. [ Reply | More ]

No she doesn't work, she lives about an house away though. It's just such an inconvenience as I don't want my daughter around when she prances people in and out of her bedroom...she is upset as it is that we have to leave the house. I feel bad for her. 8:00 at night seems too late though. I am depressed about this as it is. And, there is no lease. [ Reply | More ]

Before dd was born, we were in the same situation. Our landlord let the leases run out and advised us he was selling the bldg unoccupied. And, since we lived in the ground floor apt, ours was usually the only one shown, living room, through the kitchen to the basement and through the bedroom to the back yard...very invasive. We researched and found we really had no rights but we spoke up as often as necessary when it was inconvenient and when they locked us out and when they were in w/o notice etc. It's super annoying but to their credit, the potential buyers were all very respectful to us and gave us kind eyes as if they understood our suffering.
