[ - ] I know this is a bit neurotic, so please help me through this. I can't help but be obsessed with autism, and concerns for my ds, even though he is still very young, and has not exhibited anything that would cause concern. He's 6 months, makes eye contact, smiles a ton, and seems to be developing fine. So why do I keep thinking about autism? Wondering if it will happen to us? Wondering when/if I'd be able to tell? Ugh- horrible to be so paranoid. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Because you're fundamentally worried that there is something wrong with you and you're projecting that onto him. I say that with empathy, I was the same worried about pregnancy, that something was wrong. Try therapy to explore why you are fixated on the idea that something is wrong with him when in reality, all signs point to the fact that he is healthy. GL [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone have experience disputing medical bills? Just got a bill where there is a significant difference btwn doctor's charge (out of network) and the insurance company's allocation. I was told to contact adjuster at insurance and to ask my doctor to lower her bill. Anything else I can do? I can pay the difference but it just frustrates me that there can be such a big difference between what each side calls "reasonable and customary" charge. One side has got to be "wrong". 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

DO NOT PAY THIS BILL...it will take maybe even years but it is not right..whatever you do dont pay it...they will relent. There are laws starting to go into affect about this very subject. [ Reply | More ]

sometimes in those situations the doctor won't make you pay the difference. but IME, insurance comapnies often won't pay the full NYC price. [ Reply | More ]

Look, the bill was for $11K for all my delivery appointments and actual delivery. She told me upgront and I agreed. I also knew she was out of network so would most likely not get reimbursed entire amount. But insurance company says reasonable charge is only $8K and that since I still have not met maximum out of pocket (an entire other bullshit story) they are only giving me $5K. So even having insurance (PPO plan with BCBS) I am going to pay six grand! WTF! [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 09.04.08, 02:03 PM Flag
»
no offense, but you should have investigated this more thorougly before going out of network. insurers generally only cover 65% of what they consider usual and customary fees for out of network services, and most nyc providers charge a good 20% above that. bottom line: six grand out of pocket on an eleven grand tab is not that surprising. I did NOT know what my plan would pay. I also thought I met my max out of pocket but I was calculating what I had paid from doctor amount versus insurance amount so overstated it and found out I had not met my max out of pocket even though I have spent a lot more in reality to cover the diff between doc charge and reasonable and customary charge.
