BUT doesn't it seem like it might be better for a child to be less pressured, especially in the higher grades? all the schools are so good, even the ones that get bashed here. i kind of wish i had the guts to avoid all of the tts and just go to a hippy dippy place where they make kids feel great about themselves and offer a really good education. i don't know. it just seems so nutty to be thinking about how many children end up going to harvard from a certain school. how do i know my child will even want to go to harvard? 32 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np. It's up to her where she applies. The more she can figure out NOW what kind of school she'd prefer for dc, the more carefully she can make up her list. If she applies to a range of more progressive, low-key/low-pressure schools and avoids the TTs, her dc has a decent chance of getting at least one acceptance. [ Reply | More ]

We're at a TT, but we didn't choose it because of how many of its grads go to HYP. I agree that kind of thinking is nutty. Kids can excel in all sorts of schools, as long as it's a good fit for them. Some thrive on a lot of structure and competition, others with more freedom and less competition. Which do you think your dc is? It's not all that easy to tell when they're 4yo, but if the parents and dc's teacher are paying attention I think there are signs that clue us in. [ Reply | More ]

OR, and ITD. Fit is an issue from the moment you start applying. If you know you don't want to send dc to a particular school or type of school, DON'T APPLY. It's that simple. If OP wants something more progressive and hippy-dippy, there's no shortage of schools to apply to; she can still apply to a range and has a decent chance of at least one acceptance. [ Reply | More ]

you just have to imagine it's mid february and you didn't get into the other four. you're looking at your zoned public. do you wish you could send dc to one of the other privates? then don't pull out. you might want to pull a few and then add a few you hadn't thought of in the first place? [ - ] I sah with a 6 month old. DH has been working a lot for the past several months. He's gone about 13 hours a day and often travels and is out of town for up to a week at a time. I know I have a good life and am so grateful not to have to go back to work, but I feel beaten at the end of the day very often. He often makes comments about how nice my day sounded, which of course it often is nice but also can be exhausting, especially with him gone. Don't know if I should bring this up with him. I feel silly because he's working so much in comparision. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think talk to him about it. I've been there--DH worked long hours when dd was little. I eventually got a teenager to help in the afternoons so I could just veg out or do laundry or whatever. [ Reply | More ]

Why in the world would you be reluctant to share the reality of your day with dh? I've done both and each is exhausting in it's own way. This is strange. [ Reply | More ]

I know where she is coming from. We got pg as newlyweds, I felt guilty about being able to SAHM, he has this hi-pressure job, we were still getting to know each other. It was tough. But definitely better once I was honest w/ him. [ Reply | More ]

op: because sometimes i am asleep when he leaves and asleep when he gets home, i have a lot of little luxuries and control over my time that he doesn't have because he is working. i feel i have no room to "complain" given that he's not really complaining. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it's strange to be hesitant to bring this up. I hear you. My husband works a ton also, and when he's home he's nose deep in his blackberry. He used to do the same thing to me, making comments about my life of leisure, etc., but this summer he went on gardening leave before starting a new job and then got a taste of what it's like. Not that it's murder being a SAH but it is work! Now he's very happy I'm here and never makes smart ass comments. I'd talk to your DH for sure. I [ Reply | More ]

>>'d also suggest taking a saturday off to have lunch with some friends, get a mani, go to the movies, whatever your 'thing' is, and leave him with the baby for a while. He'll get the picture pretty quickly. [ Reply | More ]

Yup. Also, when you are SAHM, the baby kind of turns to you for everything, and you get in the habit of jumping in, esp if DH works long days. So you end up being "on" 24/7. [ Reply | More ]

ITTTA with the previous two posts. Also, he really does need to get to know the baby, and with you, the expert, hanging around, he's not going to. The SAH life has much to recommend it, but it is RELENTLESS. IMO, that's the main reason it's such a drag. It's also pretty menial, too. Not much intellectual stimulation. [ Reply | More ]

they always seem to call late; last year, I think they were the last school to call to set something up. [ Reply | More ]
