Re the African American community, I saw the Black List - a series of interviews with prominent black people on HBO - and I believe it was Toni Morrison who said that when she was growing up, families would send their girls to college but not the boys. They were afraid that the boys would get in trouble if they went head-to-head with white people, men esp of course. [ Reply | More ]

Home on maternity leave for now, but will go back to work in late Jan. 4-y-o DD goes to school 5 days/week for 3 hours and takes 2 "extra" classes (sports and art). DB will be with nanny during the day; may sign them up for some sort of class at the 92 Street Y (nearby) -- but only if nanny is intersted (b/c DB doesn't "need" it). Nanny will take DB with her when she brings #1 places (classes are drop-off), but I am thinking about "extra" coverage as well (so that nanny doesn't have to drag both DC everywhere). LL. good school, but still felt like a fall after the ups and downs with privates, H/A etc. when you get the top score out there, you get a sense of having better odds or a better kid. when you don't get what you want, you feel like the universe is out of whack or something. it will happen to many here today. others will say they are just bitter and deluded. they are, but the reason is that they were once on top, but fell. those who never were on top are happy to kick them. My kid is at the top of the Hunter waitlist (which goes thru 3rd grade) and she is at Lower Lab now. LL is excellent, no doubt. It was our 3rd choice, with a 99 on the Olsat, and we were not thrilled when we took it. Now I think it's fantastic -- a thoughtful, thorough, serious school with lots of affection too. Although I will be honest, if we get the call from Hunter we're moving her there. [ Reply | More ]

the year we applied, dc, a 99 scoring white girl, was rejected from hunter, in at anderson and lower lab (back in the pre-olsat days). imo, her anderson and LL acceptances/hunter rejection was just luck of the draw. could have gone either way. she is your typical well-behaved, mature, verbal stereotype -- the type of kid most people expect to do well in the admissions process. no use trying to dissect why one school rejected her, while others accepted her. This actually sounds very reasonable. I do think that a larger element than we'd all like to admit is somewhat random - all great kids, but who ends up where is partially due to chance or a variety of completely uncontrollable factors like the class makeup, what a particular observer notices, something a dc may or may not do on one playdate. Dec bday boy here. It was fine, except exhaustion factor. He was still napping over the Summer and only in school until noon the previous yr. For the fi9rst 4-5 wks he was beast at night. But he was fine otherwise. Is actually very socially mature and got strong marks on report card for all the social stuff. [ Reply | More ]

that option confuses me. so does 3rd private yr at 4.9 and when he is 5.9 he goes straight to ist ? sounds scarier. no ? bigger expectations ? [ Reply | More ]

no firsthand experience or advice, I just know that that is an option (since compulsory attendance begins at 6yo). I'm sure it depends on a lot of factors, including dc's personality. We actually plan to homeschool. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My visible diversity isn't visible. DD is half African-American but except for the hair, looks white. Is there a separate category for white looking diversity? Figure there can't be that many in the city.... 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Part of your diversity is that dc is growing up in a multiracial family (ours too). I'd put that in essays or letters...GL [ Reply | More ]

You make it sound like it's a bad thing. If a school gives points for having a multicultural family and we happen to have a multicultural family, you bet I'm making sure we get all our points! [ Reply | More ]

You need to go through Early Steps to "authenticate" your dd's diversity credentials. I've heard from admission people that they look at the hand and hair. Some schools really do want VISIBLE diversity but some schools just want to improve their official numbers in which case they don't care if you look caucasian or black. [ Reply | More ]

Friend's son is happy with the program. They pick the kids up at school and then drop them in a bus at your home, but it goes 2-3 hrs. The same friend also used them for a few weeks of Summer Camp. [ Reply | More ]
