All I can say is we didn't have a prayer last year as after they led us all on there, turned out only 6 spots were actually not earmarked for folks like you in the Kindergarten! A dear friend with a totally unconnected, brilliant and fun 5 yo is now seeking a first grade spot. I told her not to bother but she and her dd are in love with the school and insist on trying. If they won't save themselves the heartache than hey - what can I do, right? [ Reply | More ]

Well, GL if you try for it. Honestly, I don't see how the place can possibly maintain its unique position if it keeps doing this though. I posted last week that we are very average people and dc started K this year. I posted because when I came on UB last year I heard the same "sorry you don't have a chance" story and obviously it can be done. We don't have connections, aren't super rich, aren't diversity & not artsy. First grade adds a whole class too, so I think that would be a good possibility. Also keep in mind that ALL private schools have more applicants than spaces. [ Reply | More ]

there are three citywide G&T schools and Hunter, which takes kids formall of manhattan. then D2 has its own G&T programs. one is Lower Lab which is in the same building as 198. Those neighborhoods haven't really gone up recently, but you are correct that prices are still high. [ - ] Educator & Psych. Moms: I know NYC public schools are lacking some of the basics you find elsewhere (like recess everyday), but I am trying to get a handle on the norm is in this country. My kids go to a good PS here in NYC, but not one where there is much fundraising for "extras." Recently I wanted to speak to a social worker or psychologist about some issues my PreK son is having. I finally got the DOE to assign one to the school for PreK (they have a guidance counselor for the big kids), but I was surprised there wasn't someone very actively in place & the guidance counselor admits the lower grades are underserved. For the most part kids in this school have very involved parents, many of whom would have the determination to seek outside support, but how about the slew of schools where kids have very challenging home lives? Who is reaching these kids at these critical ages? 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Our public school in Brooklyn has a social worker just for pre-K. There are 72 kids in Pre-K, so perhaps that's why. I assumed every school had to have a separate social worker for pre-K. I don't really understand how school budgets work or why your school didn't have one in place, although that sounds temporary if you got the DOE to assign one eventually. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think that's a valid reason for procreation. It might happen and it might be nice, but there are no guarantees that sibs will have whatever kind of relationship you are hoping for them. If it helps you get through it, then fine, but for anyone considering TTC #2, I'm not sure that should be on the Pro list. How about just b/c you want to? [ Reply | More ]

NP: I can't imagine life without my sister. She and I fought like cats and dogs growing up and we were also best friends. Endless road trips with the parents would have been unbearable without her to play with and beat up on. And as our parents age and their health declines, we'll have each other to lean on. I really think it's a gift to your child to give him/her a sibling. (Plus it's a nice thought to keep in mind when things are very rough in the beginning and you wonder WHY you wanted two in the first place!) [ Reply | More ]

It's a valid reason for me. You are entitled to a different opinion. And fwiw, I really had no expectations about the sibling relationship. I grew up with 3 brothers, no sisters, so I never had that close sister relationship that I have seen others experience. What works for some, doesn't work for others. [ Reply | More ]

np-Me too. When sibs have a really terrible relationship as adults, I think something was off about the way they were parented. I think a sibling relationship is valuable and a valid reason to have a second. [ Reply | More ]

i agree that sometimes you do have to push through rough spots, if her db was 6 weeks, I wouldn't have given the same advice. she has been b/f and/or pumping for 8 months - she is tired. she has given db a lot time with b/m more than most women give. she says she is dying to quit. I was trying to support her. [ Reply | More ]

It's okay to quit whenever YOU feel you need to. With #1, I EBF until 6.5 mos (I had just returned to work and could not stand the pumping). With #2, I'm still bf'ing at 21 mos (which I never would have expected), but beginning to wean now. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you! The big problem is db doesn't take breast so I pump exclusively. Been for over 6 months now and it's killing me. I feel guilty though as db hates formula :( If I do stop, does he still need formula? [ Reply | More ]

You are a CHAMPION (BFer of 2yo here again). I had to pump briefly to establish supply and I hated it. I really truly admire people who pump for any length of time (whether baby won't latch or they have to go back to work early). Yeah they will tell you formula vs. milk until one year, but if DB is 9 months, is s/he eating finger foods, I think they can start cheese and yoghurt at this age? [ Reply | More ]

yes, he's 7 months 3 weeks now. I have some frozen BM that would probably last for a month or so if I only used 2/3 bags a day.... Still you're probably right and I should suck it up and deal till he's 10 months and then just start him on cow's milk. [ Reply | More ]

there's no reason you should keep going if you don't want to. all the benefits from breasfeeding diminish after the 3rd month and then even more after the 6th. you are not causing any harm to your child if you stop now - great job doing it this long! [ Reply | More ]
