Those that are funded by DOE and have therapists and special educators onsite include Merricats, Central Park Early Learning and YAI. There are some gen ed preschools that are open to kids they deem appropriate who may be accompanied by a SEIT and those include Habonim, JCC, First Friends, Columbus Preschool & Gym, Columbia Greenhouse, Stephen Wise, Downtown Little School and maybe Yaldanu and and Purple Circle - I am not so familiar with UES and Downtown. I have heard that bf gives immediate kick to weight loss - as in the first few weeks after giving birth. Your hormones and need for extra calories are probably helping to keep the baby weight on. Give your self a break and some time. My ob-gyn says that all those actresses/models who are a skinny two weeks after birth have had micro-lipo. did you ask the teacher for ideas? In my experience, usually the teacher knows what the child can eat or will refer me to the mom, who has ideas. Or sometimes the mom has already stashed safe cupcakes in the freezer at school just for that reason, so you can bring anything you want and the allergic child can have one of her cupcakes. cherrybrook farms has a cupcake mix (it also has cookies mixes, etc) for gluten, egg, milk and nut allergies. it is made in an allergy free facility and they do special testing to recheck for allergens. and it tastes good. as a mom of a kid with allergies i would feel my kid was safe if you made something from this product. you could make it and then bring in the box so you can show the teacher, etc. [ Reply | More ]

The report cards are BS. The DOE will have to get rid of them soon, they measure nothing except how much better a school did on the standardized test than the year before. So if one school has a 90% above grade level on those tests in 2007 and got 91% in 2008 they might get a "D". If another school had a 23% on those tests in 2007 and a 54% in 2008 then they could get an "A". My dc goes to a top, competitive public HS (non-selective) and their school got a "c" which they fought. Sadly, parents see these grades and think it means bad school. Visit the school, ask parents, find out the schools the kids go to after they leave, etc. Don't judge anything on these grades. I hope this makes sense. [ Reply | More ]

It's unfortunate that people are unwilling to or unable to take the time to read the reports behind the letter grades. I thought the reports last year and the assessment efforts are extremely helpful. I find the qualitative progress reports to be way more iffy, b/c sometimes I think the DOE uses them when it has an ax to grind. But behind these letters are real numbers, crunched in a new and interesting way. If I were a PS8 parent, I'd take a real close look at the data. [ Reply | More ]

Let's face it - at almost any gen ed, and esp. at a non-very top gen ed like PS 8, there's still room for movement except at the very top. And the school just recently started its major gentrification, and these test scores are for the 3rd-5th grade, so the "best students can't move higher" doesn't work in this environment. np: Did you see the interview? Many of her answers were vague, off topic, or obviously canned. I can't speak for others but I was pissed she wasn't giving interviews the day after the RNC. This unknown person was nominated to sit second chair to potentially the oldest person to ever become the President of the United States. Historically, the VP does little but sell the ticket once the convention ends. Palin on the other hand was secluded and crammed. I admit I have my own biases. We'll let the McCain/Palin camp decide. If after this they announce she is doing more interviews with more serious interviewers, I'll concede she won this first interview. But I don't think I am wrong on this. [ Reply | More ]

Have to pipe in here: In all American hospitals, rape victims are suject to standard medical/investigatory protocall including the completion of an evidence-gathering rape kit. The cost of the materials is added to the patient/victim's hosptial bill which is billed to insurance. If they do not have insurance, their bill is usually wiped out by the local principality or payment office. A co-pay for all hospital stays is customary, regardless of the tragedy that placed them there. A cop injured in 911 still paid a hospital bill. A woman who miscarries and loses her baby still pays a hospital bill. The family of a child who is killed in a car accident still pays a hospital bill. It's morbid to think of, but yes, when we suffer tragedies that result in medical care we or our insurance companies pay for that care. What did you think, only easy labors and cosmetic surgeries have to pay? Cancer patients and rape victims still have to pay the hospital bill. [ Reply | More ]

Wow, no I don't, but just like me, she doesn't know what a VP does. Oh yes, now I remember why we are different -- my 17 yr old isn't pregnant. And, funny enough, none of the 17-year old daughters of my relatives or friends are pregnant, nor have they had abortions. And my dh hasn't been arrested for drunk driving. Neither has the dh of any of my relatives or friends. But that's because I'm not a "real American" according to Palin because I don't live in a small town. So my values are insulted -- I'm just not as good as so-called "small town" Americans like Palin. [ Reply | More ]

that's not what the above poster meant - why should a parent of a murdered child have to pay for the police to find evidence for their crime out of their own pocket? they shouldn't. so why should a rape victim have to pay for the cost of having to have the medical exam collect the evidence of a rape on her body? it is already a humilating experience as it is - but then in wasilla, alaska to open up your wallet and to actually have to pay $300 to $1200 so your case can go forward is disgusting. how many women in this town didn't have the money to pay this fee and therefore did not proceed with the case? how many rapists walked free because of this? Usually, if the patient does not have insurance and cannot pay, the bill is wiped out by the local principality and the hospital suffers. The rape kit is ALWAYS part of the hospital bill. And yes, sad as it is, when people suffer tragedies that land them in the hospital they do have to pay the hospital bill. When you are dying of cancer, you have to pay the hospital that treats you. Does it matter if the brod is fat or skinny? Pretty or ugly? NO, it doesn't at all. I don't believe she should be anything in this country. Except maybe a grandma. If she is concerned with family values she should have watched her daughter a little more closely. Children should not raise children. It is a fact that teenager's who have kids are more than likely to grow up in broken homes. Which means hmmm young kids that are angry, insecure no confidence. Most of the time they get into drugs, drinking, and or criminals. Do we want our nation to be corrupted by this? I don't think so. I am pro-choice. We are not perfect we are human. Another thing she needs to broden her horizons and not her mouth. No sex ed? So we want our daughters and sons to grow up and think that 90210 is what sex is about? Thats just dumb. To be educated is the most powerful thing. Sex ed is needed to understand reproduction etc. I think the consequences of having sex at a young age and getting pregnant should be taught as well. Kids don't understand the responsibilities of having a child. Sleepless nights, child getting sick and vomiting on you at 3am. Being a mom is the hardest job I have ever had and will have for the rest of my life. Kids need to know that. And the whole she's going to lower tax thing. We the people in this country have become so lazy. China is making a lot of stuff that we use to make ourselves. Just because they work for peanuts. I say let the illegal immagrants do it. The sell friut on the corners. Would you do that? ha I don't think so. We care too much about what people think. Rape kits. . . . are we going to do our own pap smears too. Women who have been raped should go threw a lie detector first then it should be up to the police and forensic scientists and doctor's. Palin is taking away what our mothers our mothers mothers fought so hard for. We have a voice see? If we didn't we couldn't do anything but be a housewife. Cant' drive ourselves anywhere. Right out of high school we have to get married and have a family. Robots thats what women were back then. She is degrading women. She is taking away our rights to our own bodies. I will do whatever I see fit to mine. Screw Palin. Go back to the snowy cave you came out of. [ Reply | More ]

McCain thinks everyone should pay lower taxes, including the rich. Except the middle class would get an itty bitty tax cut and the richest Americans would get a great big tax cut. McCain's tax plan is exactly like George W. Bush's so if you liked Bush's plan, you'll like McCain's. Obama's plan is very similar to what Bill Clinton did when he was President that the right wingers claimed would ruin the economy, but they were wrong. Obama wants to cut taxes ONLY for people making less than $250,000. If you are rich, you will get a tax increase. But since you are rich, you will still have lots of money anyway. [ Reply | More ]

It's fine for rich people and corporations to get lots of money and subsidies from the gov't because they lobby McCain and run his campaign. But poor people and the middle class deserve nothing. Nothing, I say, because you middle class people just aren't paying your fair share and taxes and should be paying more more more. That's what Republicans believe -- the rich pay too much in taxes. "So..." poster. Well, they also believe that only minorities are doing drugs and unskilled illegal immigrants who don't speak English are taking good jobs from Americans who can't then find work. Give them credit for having more than one idea. [ Reply | More ]

If you are McCain, you believe in socialism for the rich. If you truly believed what you said, instead of being a typical Republican hypocrite, you would despise Sarah Palin because Alaska takes more money from the US Treasury than any other state, and uses it to build roads to bridges to nowhere, which Sarah Palin did (she build the road, instead of the bridge). Palin KEPT the money for the bridge to nowhere. You are such a hypocrite -- just like the entire Republican Party who won't take responsibility for anything they have done. [ Reply | More ]

I am in favor of lowering the corporate tax rate. I never thought that a flat 35% was fair. We have a progressive system for individuals but not for corporations? Given that we will have one rate for all corporations, I think 35% is way too high. McCain's 25% seems more reasonable. And this will help employment rates, investments (including the 401k plans and pensions of the masses), etc. [ Reply | More ]

The economy did just fine under President Clinton without giving more tax breaks to corporations. Our economy is in the toilet because the Republicans have taken us from a surplus to a huge deficit, we spent $10 billion a month in Iraq but the Repubs don't want to pay for it, and the dollar is so low because people outside the US aren't impressed with how the Republicans are running our economy. But I'm sure giving giant corporations like Exxon more money will make the economy great! Not. [ Reply | More ]

But McCain doesn't want to apply the tax break ONLY to Exxon. The lower rate would be applied to corporations with very low net incomes too. Why should a firm with $5MM in Pre-tax earnings pay the same income tax rate as a firm with $5B in pre-tax? And there are a lot more small companies than there are Exxons. [ Reply | More ]

Funny how McCain is so concerned with the unfairness of small corporations paying the same tax rate as big ones. But McCain believes it is perfectly FAIR for very rich people like me to be paying the same tax rate as very poor and middle class people. Because when it comes to taxes, it's always unfair for the rich to pay anything. That's the McCain belief and that's why I'm not voting for him, even if it will help my own pocketbook. But a much higher percentage of the earnings from those small companies go to other government revenue streams that the tax cut for them is insignificant. For Exxon it is huge. [ Reply | More ]

Right, the economy was really bad under Clinton, sure. and now we're all happy because of Bush's policies. Keep pretending that -- this is exactly what McCain wants you to believe, so if you believe that Bush's policies are good for the economy, vote McCain. Right, poster above? Tell everyone here that if they agree with the Bush economic agenda they should vote for McCain. I agree with you 100%. [ Reply | More ]

i do agree with bush's economic agenda (it's called "policy" btw) and i will vote for McCain over Obama in a heartbeat. even with 9/11 and the huge recession we went through due to Clinton's bubble economy, the unemployment during Bush was actually LOWER (or comparable at times) than under Clinton, the GDP grew at a very good rate and really, what on earth are you talking about??!?! Then I respect your vote for McCain because if you want George Bush's economic policies to continue, he's your man. But McCain knows that if he tells Americans the truth, he won't be elected, so he pretends he is offering a change. You should keep posting "If you want to continue the economic POLICIES of George W. Bush, you should vote for John McCain", and I promise I will reply saying "ITTTA"! [ Reply | More ]

yes, i do tend to agree. the president has very little to do with how the economy does. they just take credit if it goes well and go down in flames if there happens to be a recession. it's all cyclical. there are some policies that can be implemented to boost investment and consumer spending that have always been proven to work though. personally, i am just not in favor of income redistribution and obama is unabashedly talking about it, as if he's friggin robin hood. please, by all means, if you want to donate your money to the free-loaders, be my guest. not with the money i've earned, thank you. nobody is stopping any of you from giving to charities. but wait, it turns out the "red states" donate to charity a lot more than the "blue states", even though they're poorer. interesting. you are all a bunch of hypocrites. Of course it is okay. Republican are fine giving more money to anyone rich, subsidizing drilling in national parks, etc. so big corporations make lots of money. They just don't believe that the 3% of taxes going to social programs for the poor is fair. [ Reply | More ]

So you mean that anyone who isn't rich is a freeloader? We are talking about strengthening the middle class, which historically strengthens the entire economy. And, voila!, you deserving, hardworking rich folks get richer, too! Win-win, and the entire country is happy, not just the top 1%. What is your problem with this? [ Reply | More ]
