I doubt Spence, Chapin, NBS, Hewitt, BWL and Town would. Trevor might have some and Trinity some (though not as many as you think despite its UWS location bec it feels VERY waspy). [ Reply | More ]

i don't know what toaster scramblers are. my issue is the sugar. i don't care if they eat a donut (entenmann's non frosted donuts are surprisingly low in sugar, if i recall correctly), i care if they eat frosted cereal. [ Reply | More ]

op: that used to be my big issue. but my oldest is almost 9 and i'm noticing her tastes are pulling to the super fatty, super rich foods. i'm torn b/t working hard to instill healthier eating habits and leaving it alone b/c i don't want her to be obsessed with food or being thin. i'm just disheartened to realize that years of keeping whole, healthy foods in the house didn't do much good. NP: actually OP it is does do good! Maybe kids go thru phases but the best indicator of how an adult is going to eat (lifetime eating habits) is how htey are raised. So I'd say offer a few choices at breakfast (maybe a compromise, like have you made her muffins? def not healthy but at least homemade) -- like a muffin, plus fruit and a glass of milk and then leave her alone. I would not perhaps offer total JUNK b/c who wants to get in to a battle and if you don't have it in the house it's easier, but I do bake muffins for my dd and offer her those plus fresh fruit for breakfast. op again: to answer your question - toaster scrambler is a pastry with eggs and bacon inside. not much sugar but processed and fatty for the amt. of food it actually is. [ Reply | More ]

what about making her that homemade? like scramble an egg, put on a piece of bacon, and let her choose if she wants toast or a bagel or whatever.... it has to be better than the packaged stuff but still gives her that bacon boost she clearly is into! [ Reply | More ]

op: lol - this is so not the answer i want - though i see how obvious it is. she really wants to make her own breakfast and i'm having a baby in 4 wks so we're working on things she can feed herself in the am. i'm up with her but know that making her a hot breakfast will feel impossible many mornings while i'm nursing a newborn. Oh, interesting! Well maybe try what we do, which is my dd and I make a batch of muffins together, then individually wrap and freeze them. It's really not a huge amt of time, then in the AM you can take one out and reheat it (or we sometimes take one out the night before and put it in the fridge, then we just pop in to toaster over for a few mins and it's fine). Anyway, perhaps that will be fun for her and not too time consuming for you? If nothing else, it's a nice thing to do together. How old is she? [ Reply | More ]

OR: what about buying one of those hard boiled egg slicers? you can boil up the egg the night before and she can peel it and slice it herself in the morning. she can probably even make her own toast too. [ Reply | More ]

OR: tough call. my kids are much younger so while i worry about bad habits, i'm not as concerned as if they were teenagers. i also think there's a difference between routine and occasional special breakfasts. my kids eat cold cereal most of the time, if they wanted something like a toaster scrambler occasionally, i wouldn't care. i'm also not that worried about their fat intake...they aren't heavy and i don't think they eat that many fatty foods. so i guess in summary, i'd rather she eat it then not eat anythign at all. Sorry, not a PS8 mom, but am a PS parent and I am furious about the grading system!! Poor PS8 and others like it who have transformed themselves - or are in the process - and have gotten SO MUCH better serving our communities. An F is a discouraging slap in the face, though is otherwise all but meaningless to parents who know many of these schools. The DOE is a disaster and I can't wait for a new regime. [ Reply | More ]

Can't say this IRL, but it's accurate. The goal of the grading system is to show that ALL students are being given attention. The F shows partly that the school has failed in providing for students already doing well. I'm curious to see how other solid schools in good neighborhoods will do this year. [ Reply | More ]
