[ - ] At a real crossroads here. We just are not into the NY publics as the DOE time and time again just seems to be inept at best and corrupt at worst. Arguments on that aside (everyone is entitled their opinion so no point debating it) I would love to hear from families who don't get any FA and still scrape that about 30K tuition together each year for a private Manhattan education. Are you glad you made the choice? Do you ever feel like you can't sustain it? It is scary to me. 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I would ask yourself how you handle financial stress? We realized that unless DC got into one of our top choices (which weren't TT), we weren't ready to make the sacrifice since we were comfortable w/our local public. DC only got into one of our last choices and after re-touring we decided to go to public. So far it's been great, but DC is only in 1st grade. We're taking things 1 year at a time. [ Reply | More ]

I've had 2 babies myself and yes it was hard, but at this age I also remember feeling joy and intense love for both at this stage, and you haven't mentioned either emotion. np: Do not worry....I really did not enjoy my dd til she reached 3.5/4 months...I felt similar to you in that I resented her and not sleeping. Your dd doesn't need much at this point so do not worry, it is easy for your mom to do stuff w/her, she is rested and has done it all before. Do not beat yourself up and also don't decide about work if you don't have to yet. Once my baby hit about 4 months and was sleeping through the night I totally fell in love with her. Before that I would cry to my hubby that I knew I should love her like mad but I didn't....JUST REMEMBER your feelings are normal I just think not many moms tell you you may feel this way, they don;t want to scare a pregnant woman. Once your baby is smiling, giggling and "talking" all the time it is SOOOO different. My dd is 5.5 months and I just LOVE being with her. I always thought it would be an easy decision to go back to work but not I am so torn!! I will miss her soooo much!!! Good luck. And like everyone said, DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP! So glad to help...I was you...my mom kept telling me that by the time my dd was 6 months I would not want to go back to work, I laughed at her cause going to work sounded great then! I remember thinking I could not understand how anyone would want to have multiple kids since my dd was not making me happy at the time. Now at 5.5 months I already want another! Now, it makes me pretty sad. I remember I could not even get excited about buying her clothes which, with a baby girl, should be so fun. Now I want to buy her everything!! You have the baby blues, it is funny, it hit me at 10 weeks I believe not earlier. Just keep talking to your friends and family about your feelings. Taking walks/working out would help too...that and chocolate :)!!I was going to a therapist before my dd so I did see her and talk to her a few times on the phone. Also, your dd probably isn't taking regular naps yet. That helps a lot. My dd naps 3x a day and I miss her when she is sleeping!! HANG IN THERE!! [ Reply | More ]

Then yesterday he began running an ad which falsely claimed Obama introduced legislation to "teach comprehensive sex education to Kindergärtners." He was not a co-sponsor of the bill in question. The bill, which he supported, amended existing laws and sought to make any sex education "age appropriate." Obama said at the time that for Kindergärtners, this legislation was about empowering them to know good touch/bad touch so they were protected from abuse. You can apply anywhere you want, but most unconnected kids who get into tt schools have high 90s erbs. [ Reply | More ]

Not really interested in any of the so-called "TT" schools other than the hotly debated Dalton. Leaning more towards Hewitt, Trevor, Riverdale, Cathedral, CPGS but don't think those are enough quantity-wise. [ Reply | More ]

Then you might want to add Town, ECFS, NBS (if you don't mind traditional), maybe UNIS or Friends (if you don't mind the commute). [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. ECFS was on our list but we were also leaning more towards Fieldston Lower. NBS is a little too traditional for our tastes. Don't really know much about Town. Will look into it. Might I add - I already hate this process. [ Reply | More ]

You might like Town it's a blend of traditional and progressive. You should apply to either EC or FL. You have too few schools if you definitely want private. What about Calhoun? Seems like they have spots for DD. [ Reply | More ]

Calhoun strikes me as a little too progressive for our tastes. I am definitely going to look more into Town. At first I was tending to stay away from the K-8's (other than Cathedral) but am now open to them. Thanks again. [ Reply | More ]

IKWYM about Calhoun. I loved the HoS and "little" Calhoun, but was turned off by the open space for 2nd-5th grades -- seemed unnecessarily distracting. GL. If you definitely want private, you might consider Friends, too. [ Reply | More ]

It is a pain and a nutty process. Do you have DC's ERBs? This might help. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. They're OK (overall 92). Some scatter with very high verbal which is of concern. [ Reply | More ]

Do you live on UWS (District 3 or 5)? If so, you might as well throw DC's name into the lottery for an app to the School at Columbia. [ Reply | More ]

I'm wondering too. I hand delivered the app so there is no need to confirm receipt (also does not say to do so in cover letter). Waiting for their call too. [ Reply | More ]

I've heard nice things about it. I'm thinking about the three families I know with children currently there (I don't know the children, only the parents) and they are all intelligent, liberal, normal, really interesting people. [ Reply | More ]
