np - This is such nonsense. DD got into both and we sent her to Spence. Many of the kids we know at Spence got into Chapin. Many of the kids we know at Chapin got into Spence. There is so much overlap that it is nearly random who ends up at one and who ends up at the other. Spence feels a little more diverse to me, but I don't know enough Chapin families to make a very educated comment on that. [ Reply | More ]

np: part of the problem is that the world has gotten more complicated in the last 2 generations. there is an additional 50 years of history, 50 years worth of scientific discoveries, 50 years of developments in technology, plus more global awareness so foreign language seems more important, more advanced math is needed for the more advanced science/technology, etc. so we are trying to cram all that into the same K-12 schooling. if your child is at anderson, which sounds like she is given your description of the curriculum, and homework is taking 2 hours, then you should speak to your child's teacher. no way should it take that long. [ Reply | More ]

no my child isn't at anderson, but a public gen ed. I could see it in a g&t program where parents ask for this rigor, but not public gen ed. Yes, I've talked to the teacher and it's mandated by the principal. [ Reply | More ]

a NYC public school? odd that it's accelerated then, as public schools need to follow the mandated curriculum (there is some flexibility of course, but grade acceleration isn't typical, accept at a G&T, and even then, you're more likely to find enrichment, not acceleration per se). [ Reply | More ]

Yes and nyc ps. I am finding that some of the underpreforming schools are loading on the homework. I think they are trying to push the kids for better test scores. BTW, a one year accelerated curriculum is the mandated curriculum every since Bloomberg/Klein took over. [ Reply | More ]

They are learning more "stuff" on a topical level but not with the depth we did. Also, failure doesn't seemed to be allowed since it will hurt the child's esteem so kids are allowed to hand in mediocre work and get high marks. [ Reply | More ]

nonsense. i went to elementary school in the 70s, and high school in the 80s, and then on to a so-called "little ivy" and law school, and my dc, who is in 2nd grade, already knows more about geography (for example) than i ever learned in school. i feel like school was rote for me, despite being tracked. dc seems to be learning far more creatively than i ever did. Exactly! We are overloading our kids with information that they may no even need to know in the next 10 years. It's time to slow down, not speed up. Their brains will never be able to know what a computer knows. It's time to stop and reflect. [ Reply | More ]

Many European schools are segmented. You test into one of three tracks. First out of grade school and then out of junior high. When they say our high school kids versus theirs, they are comparing every high school kid in the US to just those in the top tier/track in that country. Compare the G&T kids in the US to their elite kids and we fair fine. [ Reply | More ]

well relaxing is not an option but I'd say Florida, trip with a baby is not relaxing! [ Reply | More ]

If you are relaxed, then db is relaxed. Just don't expect db to stay to his/hers usually schedule. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Am I overreacting? ILs babysat last weekend and without my knowledge DH told them they could bring their dogs (we live in a no dog bldg and I don't like dogs). I was upset but got over that, but today FIL sent pictures of db and in the background I can see the dogs sitting on our couch! I can't believe ILs thought it was appropriate to let their dogs sit on someone else's couch! Is this disrespectful or am I just crazy? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

dh gave them permission to bring the dogs over - not let them crawl all over our furniture! [ Reply | More ]

It would bother me, but life is too short and husbands don't like worked up wives who harp on their bad choices. Let him know it really bothered you and forget about it. Next time they babysit, remind them of your buildings' rules. [ Reply | More ]
