My opinion is that I like presents...and I'll take them for any occassion! :) I didn't "expect" anything after DC were born -- but DH surprised me both times with trinkets (we don't have the $ for huge diamonds or bling). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I'm leaving you, Urban Baby. I thought this would be a place to share ideas and discourse with other intelligent mothers. Instead I've found hostility, fury, meanness, insensitivity, an unbridled sense of self-importance and the kind of narrowminded self-righteousness (from both sides of any argument) that is ruining any chance of harmony in this country. If one dares to question the status quo, the prevailing attitude among too many seems to be, "Go f--k yourself." (And, yes, I anticipate that response to this post. Have at it.) The soul-sucking obsession with social status and wealth pervades. I'm truly disheartened to learn that so many women--mothers, no less--are this small and selfish. I'll miss the reasoned and kind voices of many posters (perhaps even the majority of posters), but the ugliness is too much to handle. So, farewell. Perhaps there's a kinder, gentler board out there where moms can have conversations--even differing opinions--without the nastiness. 25 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Women like to put down other women. Women think other women are stupid. This is what we pass down to our daughters. It's terrible. Women seem to now want to hear each other, hear other opnions. If anyone has a problem women like to say it's not really a problem. I see women side with the system, and even think anyone who has a problem with cartoons at school (for instance) is crazy and needs to chill. Standards are getting lower and lower. It's scary. It's not a matter of standards. It's a matter of opinion. What's wrong is to tell me I have to agree with other women just because they are women. I'll think what I like and say what I please. If it jibes with what other women believe, fine. If it doesn't, that's fine too. [ Reply | More ]

From what I have heard, they're fairly different tests, but a good score on one can be a good indicator that DC will also do well on the other. Many exceptions, of course, but a DC who is smart and tests well has a good chance of doing well on both. [ Reply | More ]

i see. so since they want 200 kids for onsite, they will take the top 200 scorers. i guess if any given years scores are particularly low, then the score cut off goes lower. i imagine there's no reason to think this won't be a high scoring year though. [ Reply | More ]

I have gone back and forth and thankfully work in a career where I can do a lot from home and I have flexibility. I need the outside stimulation, and I think I am a better more relaxed and "available" mom when I have another outlet. That being said, I don't think I could do it in a traditional 9-5 / 9 - 7 job. That would leave me too torn and I'd have to choose the kids. [ Reply | More ]

I'd say wait a few years to go back full-time. I envy the fact that you have a 1 year old. Mine are 6 and 8 and the "baby-ness" is gone. I keep wishing that I had been more "present" when they were small so that I could have enjoyed that fleeting time. I was always in a sort of existential crisis and it's only now that I realize, I'll never get that time back. Maybe just do something a couple days a week to get yourself out there. [ Reply | More ]

If you do go back, try to make sure you can be home when your oldest gets home from school. 3pm-6pm can be a dangerous time for a teenager. That is the block of time when most teens admit to first trying drugs, alcohol and sex because the parents weren't around. [ Reply | More ]

I'm with the above poster who said she wasn't always "there" mentally. I was always feeling guilty about not working but then a friend's 2yo died and I realized that life is so short and unpredictable that it gave me a renewed vigor about parenting. I think if you stop thinking or worrying so much and just have fun watching their little faces and listening to the hilarious things they say, you will realize that you are an important part of their life experience and vise versa. I do agree that you need to get some "you" time. Twice a month I go out with a fellow movie buff and we eat and see a flick and laugh. [ Reply | More ]

really? I have gone through the first 10 pages and all I see are a few questions about the ERB. No questions about preschools or ongoing. This time of the year always had numerous posts. Now the board barely moves for any type of school for that matter. I was here a month ago before application requests and it was the same thing. Someone would ask a question about private schools and the post would sit without reply for a day...to only be answered by someone withouot a real answer. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if there would be a demand for a new board to discuss just prek, just private or just public. The forums are not hard to set up. I'm here as a btdt, but my experience applying to schools is not relevant to those applying now. I do answer questions about my dc's school and try to manage expectations of some posters (for example, it's often not a very realistic plan to go public now and think you can easily get into independent schools for middle school). I also participate in posts about schoolwork content, books and homework. [ Reply | More ]
