But this is one of the things that seems strange about yield. Why not just accept the number of kids you have space for and then go to your wait list if you can't fill the spots? Do people really make school decisions based on the yield? I have no idea what the yield is at any of the schools we're applying to and could really care less. [ Reply | More ]

I understand it in theory. I just really don't understand why anyone would care about yield as a "reputation enhancer," which is what most people here seem to be saying is the reason schools are so into it. [ Reply | More ]

You guys have some of the pieces but not the whole picture. Let me spell it out simply: schools are business that want to attract the best students. Normally, an excellent candidate will have a couple or a few accepts. The admissions director will be graded/paid on how well he/she attracts the best candidates. That's why the DOAs care about having the highest yield possible (the most accepts versus offers), meaning that everyone that they wanted, accepted. End of thread. [ Reply | More ]

Not really the end of the thread because in this environment, there are tons of excellent candidates to go around, many times over. If, say, Dalton does not get 100% yield, they still have a bounty of great dc to pick from, many of whom they probably thought hard about accepting. So given that it's such a seller's market, why do they need to turn the screws even tighter? And in such a climate, it seems like an open marketplace would actually be more beneficial to schools -- they may get some dc who weren't ready to commit in advance but will once the letter comes. And do parents really care about yield at a school? [ Reply | More ]

So, say you are in a sorority and a nice guy calls you up and asks you out. At dinner that night you mention it to the other 20 girls. What if the guy had also asked out 15 of the 20, and most of them had turned him down? What would you think of him? That's yeild. [ Reply | More ]

"need" is the wrong choice of words. If you are extremely wealthy, italicize extremely, then you can afford all sorts of luxuries. Beautiful clothes, beautiful homeS, and a staff to assist you in servicing the homes and your children (whether it is a nanny, a baby nurse, a cleaner, gardener, cook, and or any combination of the above). And what's wrong with it? NOthing. IMO. You can still be a good person, a generous employer, an individual who gives much to charity and contributes to making the world a better place for others. Yes, that's true, but I think the key is really how much one relies on help with the baby. Who am I to judge, but as a mother I think it's understandable to want/need help knowing what to do with the baby once you bring it home, or to need help getting through the first weeks of sleepless nights. However, I also think some of the bumbling through and the exhaustion is a unique induction into parenthood. Parenthood is more than changing diapers and gets harder as the kids get older, but I still think you're kind of cheating yourself if you miss too much of the newborn madness. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am so worried about our finances. DH runs his own business, and income has dropped precipitously in the last 4 months. He has a very large business debt coming due in February, and we have no idea how we're going to pay it. We could probably refinance it, but it would mean more interest. We're barely covering our expenses as it is. We just don't KNOW what the future holds, KWIM? I am a SAHM and since I have no control over the outcome, it's kinda freaking me out. We definitely want to move out of the city, but can't for 2 years because of DH's business. I know our cost of living will be less then, but we need a certain amount in savings to even move. I am anxious. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np: you'd be surprised. it might not be something you want to do, but it would make a difference. i know b/c i'm n the same boat. we are having financial issues (our income is the same but our expenses just went up) and i was thinking of going back to work. i felt like it wouldn't be worth it but when i did the math, even that small percentage is worth it. i'm not saying you should, but i'm saying that even a little bit of money is more money than you would've had otherwise. If he's ready at 3, he'll probably ramp up quickly. I know this won't help for now, but in about another year, the Magic Treehouse books are lovely - adventure mixed with history. My DD, who also started at three, loves them. [ Reply | More ]

The early reader and young readers section of any library has totally appropriate reading material, with the possible exception of Wiley and the Hairy Man by Molly Bang (a book that gave my daughter nightmares). [ Reply | More ]
