McCain was different at one point, now he walk in lock step with the Republican policies that are already in place. Palin cannot put together a logical sentence and is more than willing to cater to xenophobia, hate, and division. Obama has been able to stay cool despite the fact that the Republican machine has been trying to tie every fault of the past 8 years to him and just out right lying. What happened to the Republicans of old? The less government, leave people alone party? They've created socialism for the corporate and the rich and screw everyone else. [ Reply | More ]

I will, but my point is that even if you don't land a fancy job right away, having college degree gives you a safety net for later on. My aunt did not finish college and ended up in a great job for 20+ years where she had title responsibilites as if she had the degree as she worked her way up. However, the company fell apart a couple years ago and they were all laid off. So now she is looking for a job, and lack of college degree has really closed tons of doors for her, even though she is in her 50s with decades of experience. [ Reply | More ]

but your aunt is someone who probably should have gone to college, but didn't. In other words, she might actually have learned something, and probably could have finished. I'm a big believer in attending college especially for young Black men. With so much of the world working against them, White people still love those letters behind your name. They'll still have to work 10 times as hard and 10 times a better in the workforce but they can't say sh!t about your degrees. Esepcially those from Ivies and little Ivies. They can believe your were an AA pick, but you still have to have the grades to stay there. [ Reply | More ]

I replied, "Mommy is working so daddy can finish school so he can get a better job so we can have..." My dad heard the whole thing and still laughs when he tells this story. [ Reply | More ]

We are in worse shape financially than we were when we moved, again, b/c this arrangement has not worked out too well so far. I've been missing the city the entire time. We are not wealthy. We still have our very very small apt in the city. Would we be crazy to think about coming back? When I read what you're all writing about private schools and how crowded everything is, I just wonder if I can even remotely handle any of it. TIA. 26 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

pretty much all the time she is awake at this age. engaging doesn't mean elaborate book reading or constant singing - but talking and lots of eye contact. i would put my dd in her bouncer and do chores around her - but still chat with her about what i was doing. Listen, you don't have to be a talking freak. Just be sing-songy about what you're doing, mention to her what you're doing, like, Mama's making some breakfast now, yum yum". Put some music on in the background (not TV). It's not a talkathon. She's happy to be held in a sling or your arms as much as you're willing and able. We put db on one of those playmats with the arch above it with the hanging toys. He spent most of his first 8 months on that thing. Loved it. [ Reply | More ]

Here's a guideline. I basically asked my ped the same question at one of db's early checkups, because I'm not a big gabber and I was worried that I was too quiet during the day. And ped's answer was, "Your baby will learn the language by hearing the language." So just think of it that way. It's not about being a 24-hour non-stop entertainment channel, but it's about talking enough so that your db hears the language and learns the language. GL, and don't be so hard on yourself.
