it's not a good school. the principal is great, as is the parent coordinator, and it may well get better, but there's a reason the hardware stores in the neighborhood locked up their box cutters after they noticed they would all be missing at 3:30 on weekday afternoons. there's also a reason why every parent in the neighborhood got a variance to go to 3 or 41 until that well dried up. They start having pottery studio. Start piano from K. Great art, drama teachers. Small class size.PS 41/3 are so overcrowded and they gave up their art/music roooms. PS11 has them all. We are in 2nd grade there in G&T and while I would have been hesitant to put DC in the gen ed 2 years ago, I would be OK with gen ed for K this year or in the coming years. The school has changed a lot over the past year and there are more and more neighborhood families in the gen ed. My only fear would be if they end up rezoning and people zoned for 41/3 end up being rezoned to 11...but I think most of them would be afraid to come....that is the beauty of 11, it's past reputation keeps people away and the class sizes are small [ Reply | More ]

this is the problem with those hypocrites at 11. they can't stand the thought of those snobs at 41/3 invading their school, but they breathe a sigh of relief that "more neighborhood [white] families" are filling up the gen ed. and yes, i agree that the dcs from the projects are just as much a part of the neighborhood. weird comment, but typical. No, the school in the upper grades is about half filled with kids on variances from all over the city. THAT is what I meant. what is your obsession with the projects?? I'm sure some dcs from the projects go to private school. There is a catholic school in the area that I'm sure some attend....the fact is that the population at 11 isn't mostly from the immediate neighborhood because the school had problems in the PAST and as a parent at 11, I know for a fact that a large percent of kids there commute in from Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn and it was also an option for NCLB kids since seats were unfilled by kids zoned to the school. But since you are so fixated on projects, there are only a few projects actually zoned to 11. Also Chelsea didn't have as many families living in it 10 years ago as it does now which also means more kids in from the neighborhood will be utilizing the school. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] So I've been reading up on advice on how to prepare your toddler for a new baby. I read that you should show your toddler pics of them as babies to get them to understand that they were once babies and that they needed special attention. My DS who is 2yrs and 3 mos hates looking at these pics. I don't think he understands that these pics are of him and, when he sees a pic of me holding him, he seems to get upset. Anyone else have that problem? If so, did you just stop showing him his baby pics. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np: it's ironic to me that parents who care about things like pesticides, antibiotics, chemicals, HFCS, in FOOD - have no problems with whatever ingredients, chemicals and heavy metals are in vaccines which are injected into tiny babies. If we recognize that chemicals in food can cause health problems, why is it so unimaginable that chemicals in vaccines could also? [ Reply | More ]

the assumption that the risk is tiny is naive. as much as i believe that vaccines are important, i don't close my eyes to the fact that there are likely real risks involved - esp now that the vax schedule is more than twice what it was a generation ago. i think it's naive not to be able to say, hey people, we need to critically examine the vax schedule and see if we can make some improvements to take away some of the risk of side effect and problems wo compromising the eradication of diseases. people need to understand however, that some of the diseases we vax against are not likely to affect newborns - like HepB, HepA [ Reply | More ]

np: They have removed thimerosol from childhood vaccinations, and the number of autism cases continues to rise steadily. Since the paranoia of autism from this mercury-based preservative have caused many parents to abstain from vaccinating their children, we have seen a serious resurgence of preventable childhood diseases in not only children, but also adults who are not immune and exposed to these children. Yes, you may hear about cases like the child who died from the hib vaccine, but these risks are so low. There are also serious consequences and risks of not vaccinating. [ Reply | More ]

If you're going to insist that I vaccinate my kids (which I did), how about reciprocating the favor? Quit insisting on antibiotics for your kid every time he has a sore throat, or a fever, or the sniffles. Make sure it's a serious bacterial illness. Antibiotics do nothing for viruses, and even many mild bacterial infections will clear up themselves if simply allowed to run their course. I realize you want your kid back in school tomorrow, and keeping him home for five days is inconvenient, but if you want to talk about putting other kids at risk, just consider how many more antibiotic-resistant strains are out there as a result of overuse of antibiotics.
