[ - ] my dc is turning 6 in a couple of weeks. he has been talking about his bday party since october. wrote down all the kids he wanted to invite. we are so poor right now and dh says we can't afford a party. i want to do something for dc since he is too young to understand money issues and i frankly don't think it should affect his bday party. it usually rains this time of year so i have to have it indoors but our place is too small for that (the most we have over is 2 friends and it's tight in here with the parents) what should i do to convince dh that we can afford a $200 party? 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Not socially competent enough means the other little girls will eat her up like barracudas. Little girls can be vicious and it gets worse as they get older. If your child can't hold her own socially, ie. manuever, be 'cool,' take sides, gossip, be able to put other girls down, act better than other girls, navigate alliances and rivalries... she's not going to do well at a girls' school. The school did you a favor. It's not a reflection on your child's intelligence or charm or even maturity. Some people are good at social manuevering and others aren't. Right now, the school thought your child wouldn't be. [ Reply | More ]

NP. As the mother of a 2 year old DD, I couldn't agree more. I think my view of C just changed. It is 100% absolutely the school's job to make sure girls, especially young 5 and 6 year old girls, do not behave like barracudas. now, they can't police everything, but part of their job is to teach social skills and being part of a community. And who are the parents of these girls that they would want a school that wanted barracudas? OP, the school definitely did you a favor. [ Reply | More ]

I think almost all of these responses are ridiculous. I'm a Chapin alum, and the school loves all its girls a just wants them to do well. I totally agree that their phrasing could be improved upon, but really all they're saying is that they found your daughter a little less socially mature than most others they were accepting. Taking this to mean that they don't teach social skills is just silly; of course they do, just like any other good school. Anyway, what they said may or may not be true, but in the end it's really just about finding a place that wants you as much as you want them, right? [ Reply | More ]

They told me that and I was somewhat surprised, but felt as though Chapin really knew what kind of child would excel at the school and it wasn't my child. I was somewhat miffed, but also grateful that they weren't going to accept her just to have her flounder. [ Reply | More ]

Spinach has a lot of iron and folic acid in it and your body may be craving that. I craved broccoli when I was preggo and the next day found out I was slightly anemic. I'd eat what you're craving, just make sure it's thoroughly washed. Cravings are usually your body telling you what it needs. [ Reply | More ]

Don't get me wrong, I'm craving crap too. I hate Nestle Quik any other time, but I was drinking the Strawberry Quik by the gallon until I got put on bed rest and a strict diet for gestational diabetes. But I think in my pregnancy I was possibly lacking in iron and folic acid so I started craving spinach by the pound. My husband says I'm Pregnant Popeye. [ Reply | More ]

yoga and swimming really helped me with my second pregnancy. But don't stress too much. Eat healthy, indulge every once in a while, and remember the weight is just a number and it will melt away after you give birth. With #2 I was started out 190, got up to 245, and was down to 145 about a year and a half after he was born thanks to nursing and WW. [ Reply | More ]

I am not really a stationary snob, but the engraved stationary from Mrs. John L. Strong (something like that), sold at Bergdorf's, is the classic UES stationary I believe. Dempsey and Carol (something like that) and Crane's are also classic. I go to Reaves Engraving, which has classic style stuff for much less. [ Reply | More ]
