[ - ] Legal Moms - Rent from an owner in a condo in NYC. Gas line to "C" line of apt building is leaking and gas is shut off until further notice. Building said it could be weeks. We have no oven or stove now and I have a newborn. Can I legally deduct food expenses from my rent? Our lease states that it's the landlords responsibility to provide a working stove and oven. you do not need to boil water. you can use good ol tap water. if you are warming bottles, the microwave is fine, just shake it and test before giving to baby. And, no, you cannot just deduct rent. You can escrow the rent and fight it out in court if you want, but you cannot just make a deduction. [ Reply | More ]

You can't withhold rent for this. You can ask the landlord to reduce the rent, but you can't do it unilaterally. Shutting down the gas because of a leak is a safety issue that overrides almost everything else. I know it's annoying, I went without a stove for weeks after mine died and I needed to replace it - a small electric hot plate is only about $15 and does the trick when necessary. And FWIW, in NYC, you don't need to boil water for bottles for a healthy newborn - filtered tap water is fine. [ Reply | More ]

I posted this a while ago. My DD went there three years ago. We took her out and went to another PS because we felt that she needed more. "It is a good place for kids who need a warm nuturing environment. They put much of their effort towards "special needs" kids, ie. kids with physical disabilities but can otherwise be part of a class. The physical plant is in poor condition and the bathrooms were always dirty. They are a school on a limited budget and have no desire to be anything else. In many ways, it cannot compare to what other schools bring like specialty teachers for music, art or another language. They will have additional specialty teachers in the classroom but those are there to help the special needs kids. It has a small play area. The Director is nice but fairly invisible. If there is a problem or if you need to speak to her she will make herself available, otherwise you may not see her all year. The sunshine room was great for 3-4s but Merricats is a pre-school working on a shoe string budget and you have to accept that. The parent body is not very active during the year. They have one fund raiser per year where all parents participate otherwise they are pretty invisible. Many of the kids go on to public which may be why many parents don't go out of their way to participate in the school. They don't want parents in their classroom at any time. They are poor communicators and except for two meetings with teachers during the year, you will never know what is going on in the classroom. No news letter, journal or letters home, must get all info from DC which we found frustrating. " [ Reply | More ]

I agree. Usually the best way to help the child in a tough scenario like this is to help the parent. Sometimes, simply asking a question like to the mom or dad, like how are you doing to day, will let the air out of situation almost immediately. Nothing good comes from yelling at a mom or dad already in a heightened state and you potentially make things worse for the child. If I felt the situation was too explosive I would call or signal for the police. To get into the face of another parent, make the situation more dangerous for the child and it's simply all about bravado and bragging...look, I put that parent in her place. So you did. What do you think is happening to the child once out of your sights? [ Reply | More ]

It depends. If I saw a mother stressed out on the bus, I might try to offer her sympathy and perhaps hold the child (if he'd let me). One of the worst things I ever saw was a stressed out Jewish mother whose kid ran from her in a store and she snapped "Stay there. Stay there so I can hit you." and the young girl was terrified and frankly, I was too. And I didn't do anything because I was afraid to go anywhere near that mother. [ Reply | More ]

when we applied to c&c we had barely heard of beginnings, except knew one family who desperately wanted c%c and got beginnings instead. truly. my, how things change. you discovered you hated c&c so quickly? i imagine it is unusual to apply out from there to PRE-schools, as opposed to simply going for another ongoing with a pre-K. i think there's a bit of a backlash. many of the parents there now are just so gross as far as flashing their wealth, and a lot of downtowners loathe that scene no matter how much $$ they have (or don't). [ Reply | More ]

lol. I am at B now, and I have no $$ to flash. Sure, a few people have lots of $$$, but there are lots of people just like me. Even those that are really wealthy don't flash and their kids are pretty grounded. [ Reply | More ]

Same here. We're ordinary, friendly, and like the other parents (although it isn't very diverse). Great preschool, love the kids. [ Reply | More ]

Beginnings parent -- I am kind of astonished at SOME of the money there, but also astonished at how down to earth all the parents are. We are not $$$ and get along well with all. It's a true mix, not everyone is wealthy. And the kids are lovely. [ Reply | More ]

they add so many spots for 3s and only offer 3 days a week for a lot of young 3s in the afternoon. we were lucky and got offered 4 days in the morning, but i know several people who turned them down for schools with more days or AM options. [ Reply | More ]

As a SO parent who became very involved in this pre-school process, I would say unequivically that the "popular kids" from the "popular" table ABSOLUTELY send their kids to Beginnings and it is their FC by a mile. Nothing else in the neighborhood comes close (with FP a distant second). [ Reply | More ]

I disagree - I chose afternoon instead of Morning because it was better for our child. You make it sound as if all other programs don't have afternoon programs. What about the families who are shut out altogether at Beginnings, and then have to suffer with afternoon programs at the second/third/fourth choice? [ Reply | More ]

gimme a break. I love our afternoon program (not at Beginnings). There are a LOT of people who don't get into Beginnings who convince themselves that "their" second choice is better for this ridiculous reason. Whatever you have to do to sleep through the night. [ Reply | More ]

Yesterday I posted that PSD told us to send our kid to clown school because "dc is the type who is going to run away to join the circus anyway so you might as well cut out the middleman". Three people called "FAKE" and sounded angry, two accepted it as real but expressed skepticism, trying to get me to prove it, and two took it in earnest and ranted about the PSD. Alas, no one found a way to play along with the joke. There you have it. [ Reply | More ]
