[ - ] I am an idiot. I totally spaced and missed a pre-k playdate. Is there any chance they would still consider us if I called apologized profusely and tried to reschedule, or is a foregone conclusion that DC won't get in? 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np: Perhaps it's not the flakiness, but the response to missing that impresses them. The OP said she wanted to apologize profusely which I think is a great idea. Everyone makes mistakes, but it is the way one responds to them that shows your true colors. Lying and saying an emergency came up doesn't cut it. But a no excuses sincere apology that acknowledges how much inconvenience you've caused can actually impress someone. In fact, it's a basic rule of customer service that far too many companies no longer follow, to the detriment of us all. [ Reply | More ]

It sounds like dh might just not like the religious ceremony. It sounds like he was okay with a mohel doing it 8 days following birth, right? I know there are some mohels who do circumcisions for non-religious Jews, and you could check with them. Also, you need to talk to dh. It's possible he was freaked out by the idea of holding his son while the bris occurred. Make sure he knows he DOESN'T have to do this -- we had an uncle doing it, and other times people have used other relatives or friends. [ Reply | More ]

Why don't you just wait 8 days, have the mohel come to your house and do it - without inviting guests and having tons of food, etc. Surely that would be ok with DH - presumably it's just the party/ceremony part that he doesn't want... [ Reply | More ]

In certain closed minds, the baby wouldn't be Jewish "technically"? Crazy. Seriously. I've always had problems with the idea of waiting 8 days to have this big ceremony during which your baby's penis is cut with a blade. It is very painful, and the association is now being formed in an infant who has been home, who has been comfortable and loved for a week and is now suddenly thrust into this bizarro and painful ceremony. I'm with your dh on this one. Get it all done at once at the hospital. Your son is Jewish. [ Reply | More ]

Have you ever seen a real bris? The baby rarely even cries. And it's much safer than hospital circumcisions, because blood clots better after eight days, because mohels have literally hundreds of times the experience that doctors do, and there is less risk of infection. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I certainly have heard of some bad mohels, though personally I've been lucky with my boys and with the other brises I've attended with various mohels. Good mohels have the sandek actually holding the baby, not putting the baby on that medical contraption, and I think that keeps them calm. Usually the only time they really cry is when the diaper is taken off at the start. [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand the problem. Why don't you just have the mohel do the circumcision with you, dh & maybe the grandparents there. Just tell dh the mohel is doing some prayers but don't call it a "ceremony". [ Reply | More ]

not to minimize your feelings here but you need to take a deep breath. either way this is not a calamity. i'm curious what your dh does not want. is he saying he doesn't want a big ceremony or that he doesn't want the bris at all. does he want a bris but not with a mohel? your baby is jewish b/c you are jewish. it is important to have the bris on the eighth day but there is no technical reason to use a mohel instead of a doctor. I just carefully re-read your post. You can certainly do this in the hospital (more risky and painful than with a mohel at 8 days, but people do it). Just call the mohel and tell him. He won't be happy about it, but can do a ceremony on day 8 that will make it a 'kosher' bris - probably similar to what they do for adult converts who were circumcised as kids. [ Reply | More ]

There are some basic prayers that should be done. But the main point is one of intent -- the doctor is not perfoming it as a 'brit milah' -- the covenant of the circumcision. He is doing it as a medical procedure. Technically, it's actually the dad that's supposed to do it, but most of them aren't super excited about taking that role and delegate to the mohel, who then performs the service as a proxy. I could believe that with the right instructions and formalities a doctor could act as that proxy. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's another up and coming park slope school. Tours are going on now and you should visit. It's in District 15, which is a plus. Make sure you look at the lower grades, especially, because when a school is transitioning, it's often first reflected in early grades (more middle and upper middle class kids), so test scores, which begin in 3rd grade haven't caught up. [ - ] When my dd was 1 she only had 1 tooth. She now at 18 1/2 months has several but we still need a total of 8 teeth to come in (including her molars) and I am wondering if she's suppose to have all her teeth in by the time she's two. We are not seeing any signs of teething right now either. Do molars come in before or after two usually? I know each child is different but both my husband and I had all our teeth by now - according to our parents. TIA 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

no. molars come in much later, in stages... i forget the ages, but i think it's 6yo and 12 yo, then wisdom teeth (last molars) at 16-18 yo. [ Reply | More ]

The other 4 are her Anteriors (top) # 6 and 11 and her Mandibulars (bottom) # 27 and 22 (sorry got all the lingo off a dentist website. Are these the last teeth to come in with the exception of molars & wisdom teeth. [ Reply | More ]

oil a cookie sheet, press the dough into it, put on sauce, cheese, and any toppings you want - bake at 425 until the cheese is bubbly and the crust golden [ Reply | More ]

no - put cornmeal on the sheet and use the back of the sheet- pizza will slide right off. use less sauce and toppings than you think you need otherwise you will weigh it down too much. [ Reply | More ]

I used to think that way, about NEVER letting my son play with toy guns, but once he turned 7 I let up a bit. He is crazy for star wars as well and if you just keep some guide lines its not so bad. [ Reply | More ]

HA!HA!HA! Wait until he turns your hair brushes, spoons, etc into guns. Good luck with that. [ Reply | More ]

My parents tried this. But everything became a gun: my shoe, a cracker with a bite taken out of the corner, etc. [ Reply | More ]

We won't buy our ds a gun. Lightsaber, yes, but gun, no, no matter how old. Of course, ds still turns everything into guns (i.e., holding tinker toys, etc.) but we just feel like imaginative play is different from actually buying the things. [ Reply | More ]

how old? my sister doesn't have kids, and i'm on the fence if this is a good idea or not. my x-bf wasn't allowed to play with guns as a kid, and i always thought he was oddly fascinated with firearms. [ Reply | More ]

I don't buy him toy guns, but I don't freak out if he plays with them at someone else's house. He's really into legos, and a lot of the sets come with lego people and tiny little guns, lasers, missles, etc., and I do buy him those. He's 6. [ Reply | More ]

maybe wait until he asks for it? Why introduce unless he asks. and then go for a toy looking as opposed to realisitic looking gun. [ Reply | More ]
