[ - ] Pls help: Was forced to withdraw DS's app to FT preschool b/c of our financial situation (inv fund w/ pay cuts, DH laid off). Does anybody know of any good UES part-time (read: less than $12k) program that "could" (wishful thinking) have spots for the fall? any other suggestions? I'm desperate! 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

given individually to children applying to K. bracken is given individually and olsat is given in groups of 4 to children applying to 1st grade (taking it in K). bracken tests shapes, colors, numbers. OLSAT tests more abstract thinking - which one is not like the other, sequencing, patterns, matrices. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Is there such a thing as a mild milk allergy? My dd, now 3yrs has always tended toward a rashy bum (just the hole area, sorry about tmi). I thought it would improve when she was potty trained, but it has not. She has no other symptoms of an allergy, but I cannot figure out why she would be so rashy there. We keep it clean, etc. Thoughts? She doesn't eat meat, so dairy is a main source of protein for her and I'm hesitant to try eliminating it. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Any allergy can be mild. Too much citrus can cause this symptom too. Make an appointment at an allergist or have a milk allergy test the next time she has to have blood taken. The result will be given on a "scale" from severe to mild. [ Reply | More ]

did she have a milk allergy before? Maybe she isn't fully out of it. I know both of my girls were born with a milk allergy. It went away but it took longer (2.5yrs) for my older dd [ Reply | More ]

No, we've never had her tested. She's been pretty much the same like this since birth. The odd thing is she has never, ever, ever liked milk. The ped said it was fine to just give her dairy other ways. Occasionally, she'll have chocolate milk like today at lunch. Then she had a bm this afternoon and a really rashy bum. Can it happen that fast? [ Reply | More ]

Get a new ped. She doesn't need dairy. There are plenty of other good sources for protein. Read Disease Proof Your Child for more on this. [ Reply | More ]

I would try acidophilus. I always give it to DD for any GI upset and it always works immediately well. But I don't know what would be causing your DD's rashiness--that I haven't dealt with--so I would definitely look into the diet and allergies. PS article today in the Times about how you should NOT use blood tests to see if kids have allergies. way too many false positives. instead, it's recommended that you go to an allergist and have food "challenge" tests. good luck [ Reply | More ]

we are thinking about applying. not sure, though. worried entire focus will be academic and DC will not come out on the other end well-rounded. While DC is smart, I don't want that to be the only thing that defines her. [ Reply | More ]

the Sol-Goldman Y on E. 14th Street has rooms the rent out for parties. I think it's like $250. We did this for our dd 4th bday. THey gave us one of the classrooms and the tables and chairs were all the right size..also we were able to use the toys in the class if we wanted [ Reply | More ]

You're probably right - except in the few cases where a family had a job transfer or etc. so the school actually has advance notice. I don't think these are the majority, but some people have posted in recent weeks that certain schools knew definite spots. [ Reply | More ]

Not really. Wall Street to date has cost U.S. taxpayers 4.6 TRILLION dollars. Do you not see the difference? 246 million for Hollywood is a drop in the bucket. To be precise, Wall Street has soaked us for 19 THOUSAND times that. Seriously. THAT is why we're more upset about Wall Street. [ Reply | More ]

Wall Street was CERTAINLY not the sole problem. How about idiots who knew they wouldn't be able to afford their house but bought it anyway? How about American car companies that didn't bother to keep up with the changing times and build cars that people would actually want to buy? How about government regulators who were too busy evading their own taxes to pay attention to their JOB? Get your facts straight next time or risk looking like an idiot (again). [ Reply | More ]
