as a first step find a website with reviews of all public school (something like insightschools), after you get down to a 5-6 go and visit so you can compare. My friends son is at PS6, K and they are happy. But again they don't have a comparison. [ Reply | More ]

my 2.5 loves brushing her teeth. we went and bought three or four different tooth brushes. she can choose each night. her favorite is Thomas the Train - which plays the song for two minutes and makes sure she brushes for that long. After she's done I brush. Sometimes she even lets me floss her teeth. She goes to the dentist every six months. I did tell her that if she doesn't brush her teeth that her teeth can get very nasty dirt on her teeth and she has to make sure that doesn't happen. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't say so. We go to a developmental school (92nd street Y - or I don't know what it is really but it's not classically "traditional") and the kids do really well with exmissions, including the "unconnected" ones. If the ongoings clearly preferred more academic backgrounds I promise that nursery schools would be following suit. I'd think you'd have the most success choosing a nursery school based on your child's style (if there's such a thing at 2) and your own tastes and preferences. [ Reply | More ]

Do you mean adjusting to the first yr at ongoing? I think whatever a dc learns in prek just sets them up for a start in k. In a couple of yrs, whether a dc went to prek or not, they are all at the same level. That is probably wasn't what you were asking. I think that it depends on where a dc goes to K. If dc goes into a tradional ongoing, it probably helps alot. We have two dcs who went to very progressive preks and they had a hard time adjusting to the new format of the school day at our traditonal school. [ Reply | More ]

Same here! My dd has severe milk allergy (I can't imagine having the soy allergy on top of that). I now just nurse her for two minutes or so before bed time (we are slowly getting rid of that too - she is now 2.5). But at the age of your baby it is greta yuo are still doing this - because for you cow's milk and soy are not an option. (when my daughter was around 15 minutes she had a terrible stomach bug and as she recovered, didn't want to eat, only nurse - and I really credit the nursing for being able to get some nutrients in her). I nursed in the airport and on the plane - I did have one of these nursing covers from www.bebeaulait.com. I know there were times that people were looking, no one ever said anything. If they did I probably would have said "did I ask for your opinion?" Do what you need to do and know you are doing it for your kid! [ Reply | More ]

My answer is a bit different than what you asked. A couple of years ago I passed an old car with a for sale sign with a $2000 price listed. Thought to myself -who in the name of God would buy that old car for $2000. Almost instantly remembered that I had bought a suit for slightly more than $2000 the day before. Hit me like a thunder bolt - what an asshole I was - how a $2000 car could really change someone's life for the better wheras my stupid suit, while pleasing to me, wouldn't be impacting anyone's life. From that day forward I try to never second guess how people spend their money...we're all full of contradictions. [ Reply | More ]

np, Really? You don't see how coming up with an additional 4k is not possible? There is a cut off point for everyone. Then why not 8k? Of course people will scrimp and pay the tuition and then have no much left for anything else including savings. Some people are in that situation and are making that sacrifice assuming it is only a temporary fix that will hopefully turn around in a couple of years. I feel for you. My dd participates in a specialty extracurricular and between classes, outfitting, competition fees, fund-raisers, travel and overnight expenses to special events the price tag is hefty. It is a sizable commitment of both time and money. We are still able to swing it, but I can really feel the costs. I have noticed that a few families have taken a leave while others have cut back on events - and I do expect the numbers to continue rising. I think that you are doing the right thing - I would do the same - as I also put a premium on religious education. Hang in there - things will turn around. [ Reply | More ]

I think people who are used to having a lot of money can learn new ways of doing things. Just like you can find an apartment in NYC for under 200K, you can find inexpensive karate lessons. OP, where are you located? We might come up with something not far from you. [ Reply | More ]

There was just an article in the Times this week that Broadway has actually NOT seen a decrease. I have several close people in bar/restaurant jobs. Tips may be down a little but not that much. (Now if they worked at financial area places that might be different, I don't know.) I have several friends in children's books. None of them have mentioned a loss of income. I don't know of any of my friends being in tourism. And the people I know in finance who have taken a huge hit do not make up the majority of my circle. So I stand by my original point which was that, while some people have taken huge hits, it is inaccurate to say it is MOST people. [ Reply | More ]

With all respect I totally disagree. DH is in the bar/rest business and him and colleagueshave seen an enormous drop off in positions and tips for existing positions (both high and low end places). As for me, I'm a WC profesional and took a 33.3% salary cut, and many colleageues have been either completely laid off or taken salary and/or bonus cuts as well. So the huge drops in incomes are present. [ Reply | More ]

My partner and most of her friends are in bar/restaurants. They say that things are still ok. The big difference they notice is that the larger parties at the bar are not tipping as well. (But this in not usually a big % of income.) They also said that the rumors of the demise of their work at 9-11 were unfounded. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My 3.4 yr old dd is really testing me lately. I find myself not even wanting to be around her because I get so pissed off. It's every little thing she does, everything is difficult. For example today I put her to bed and told her not to get up unless she has to go potty. An hour later she is still up and there is evidence that she has been up. I tell her not to do specific things and she does them anyway and when we talk she seems to understand and says yes ma'am and does it again. When is this going to be over!? She picks her lips and I tell her to stop if I see her doing it, yesterday this happened and she stopped and then put her finger on her lip and stared at me like, "haha". Ugh, so frustrating. 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

try this: the first time you see something you don't like, you let her know--"darling, its not good to pick your lips because it makes them hurt"--the next time you see her do it, you give one more general reminder--"sweetheart, what did mommy say about picking your lips?" after that, you don't provide reminders, you totally ignore the behavior (it sounds to me like she enjoys getting a rise out of you) [ Reply | More ]

that sucks! transitions are really hard for that age, but let me tell you something I learned, kids usually engage in obnoxious behavior if (a) something is wrong with them (e.g. hungry, tired, upset...etc.) or (b) it works for them (e.g. she like the control of getting you riled up, she gets out of something she doesn't like or gets something that she does want...etc.)...maybe you could try only enforcing things that you absolutely cannot budge on (e.g. safety issues, health issues) and other things, like nap time, can be "stay in your room" and whatever she does in there is her choice [ Reply | More ]

1. don't let it get you down. this is very normal behavior. 2. don't sweat the small stuff. if she hurts herself picking at her lip, she'll stop doing it. if she's not hurting herself, why are you knocking yourself out trying to get her to stop? [ Reply | More ]

I would add that the rating of congress as a whole is a very flawed statistic because you are asking a person from Iowa to tell you how they feel about a senator from massachusetts...a better indicator is the individual senators rating by their home state (massachusetts rating of the mass senator...etc.) and that is usually high (it was even high when the rating of congress as a whole was in the teens) [ Reply | More ]
