Get some great original artwork from a site like etsy.com. That way it's less about a ticket price and more about getting the couple something unique for their home. Weddings shouldn't focus on $$ anyway. [ Reply | More ]

If they are good friends, they will understand that your present is your presence. You could also do something creative, like make them 14 CDs of music for their honeymoon, or some such thing - think it means more anyway, but that's just me. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DD is nearly 9. She loves creating scenarios/videoing her Littlest Petshop pets. She takes them everywhere with her and I think it's cute. However, a rather controlling mom that i know told me that she ditched her 7yo's littlest pets as they were too babyish. My instinct is just to let my dd enjoy herself the way she wants, but am I doing her a diservice? 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

NP: I know what you mean -- my 8-yr old dc still likes playing imaginary games with playmobiles and I can see that some of his friends have outgrown it. It's interesting that I don't hear any kids referring to that as "babyish" and my ds definitely doesn't have any sense that it might not be "cool", which is great. So maybe it's the mom's problem, and not the other kids, who don't judge what toys their friends play with. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I suspect it is the mom's problem - she is hyper-controlling over her kids' food - never lets them have soda. No Nintendos...that sort of thing. But there's always that thread of worry that your kid is not keeping up...I know, I know, I shouldn't care. I try not to. [ Reply | More ]

regarding "keeping up" -- in what way? free play chosen by the child, while stamped out at most schools, is actually how dc's learn best. so what if she's marching to her own drummer? imo, you'd be doing her a disservice by forbidding it, not by allowing it... [ Reply | More ]

NP: I just booked to take 5YO DS to SP. I went straight to the Holiday inn express rather then book through the Sesame web site and saved almost $200. They do packages and 2 tickets are included with the room price. We just have to get a 3rd ticket there. And they are 2 day tickets. There are I think 4 hotels that surround SP that have shuttle bus to the park. So save on parking. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I was very upset by the post earlier today from the mother who said she was going to smack her child, scream at him, then smack him again. When asked whether she had done this in the past she wrote "I plead the fifth". Why is there no community response to this sort of post that makes it clear that hitting your child is never appropriate. Is this a board that condones smacking? Nobody said anything! I'm bothered enough to consider signing off UB. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] I'm new to NYC...specifically park slope. Have a 2.75 year old son, who will be 3 in Nov. I'm super confused about the preschool/pre-k process here. As it seems, preschool is sort of a more structured daycare for (2-3 year olds?) and pre-k is actually more like school but for 4-5 year olds? Can someone help me understand the system? So, my son is going to be 3 in Nov. Now, I didn't go to preschool, and no one I know did. Would any of you seasoned NY mommas tell me why my son should go to preschool instead of hanging out with his nanny until kindergarten? ( I know that sounds stupid - I'm really curious, though, what the benefits are). 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

it teaches dc socialization skills and how to deal with the structure of a school environment. but it's not necessary, particularly if you do ps alternatives and classes and the like. pre-school is private for 2-3 y/os. pre-k is for 4-5 y/os and can be public or private. the latter tends to be for longer each day and has activities geared towards a slightly older dc but is essentially the same thing. ^ park slope is pretty competitive. you could try to get on waiting lists for this year, but your best bet is to start working the phones the day after labor day for next year if you decide to do private pre-k. you should also check insideschools.org and the doe website in the fall to find out when to apply for public pre-k. my son will only be 3.75 for next fall. Will he be eligible for pre-k? that just seems early. He's on this cusp that makes me wonder where he falls in the school arena. So, this fall he is 3 in Nov. Could do preschool but of course I am really late. I was thinking this winter or next fall, when he is 3.75, would be better for preschool. But then the next fall he will be 4.75 and ready for almost Kindergarten? Will NYC admit kids under 5 for K? Any insight? [ Reply | More ]

socialization..there is so much of it he will get from his nanny. My dds both went to preschool and their school was a developemental one. It had free play and structure. The kids learn to work in groups, one on one, sharing, ect. I love their experience and will send my 3rd dc when he's old enough. I didn't go to preschool either (I'm 40) but I'm sure if my mom knew better, she would have enrolled me since I didn't have a lot of socializing skills with other kids (only adults) when I entered Kinder [ Reply | More ]

Pre-K in NYC is the year before Kindergarten. Many public schools have Pre-K programs, where your dc would be going to the same school she/he would attend Kindegarten. However Pre-K is not guaranteed, so if you are zoned for a public school with very few Pre-K spots, you might not make it in (it's usually by lottery, with sibling preference). Right now NYC goes by calendar year, so your son could attend public Pre-K beginning Fall 2009, when he is still 3. You could skip private preschool, but it's very helpful to have pre-k. These days, Kindergarten, especially public, is more academic, and it's nice to have a year of socialization schooling under your dc's belt before he starts K. [ Reply | More ]
