Couldn't Keep It To Myself by Wally Lamb is interesting. Quick read- written by a group of female inmates in CT. He led a writing workshop for them and they turned it into a book. A little sad, of course, but gives you some insight into their lives and experiences. We read it for book club. Now reading The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver - good so far. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Second guessing myself -- had a last minute choice between Acorn and Beginnings, and chose Acorn, largely because we prefer traditional schools and DH thought Beginnings was pretentious. We're equidistant between the two. But now wondering if Beginnings is a better school, better exmissions, etc. Why am I obsessing? 162 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know why. It's just pre-school. It will not affect your child's future happiness no matter how you extrapolate it. You need to find something else to keep you so busy that you are happy to be done with making a reasonable decision. Move on or parenting will wipe you out by the time your child is 8... If your kid scores 99x3 on ERBs, any school is OK. If it comes to WL situation you will be glad that you chose Acorn. We are extremely happy with the guidance we got and the end result. It's more about figuring out where you'll be happy rather than where your child will be happy at this point. Meaning your child will be happy at either place. You have to find the school you'll be most comfortable with and that will reflect on your child's experience. [ Reply | More ]

I had the same choose last year and choose Beginnings. I kind of preferred Acorn, but my DH loved B. And I guess I was swayed by the whole "TT" thing. My child is very happy so it seems like it was the right choice. But I think kids are happy in both places. And I really liked Jill at Acorn best of all the PSDs. It seems like a lovely school, so be happy! [ Reply | More ]

My mom had a crush on my dad for years. He was dating Mary Joe the slut the sumer of 19??. He approached mom at the soda shop where everyone hung out and asked her if she was free that Friday night. She wondered about Mary Joe and her good fortune as she replied, "Let me check." She pulled out her little book (which was very empty) and said, "I guess I could move a few things around... sure." "Great." Dad replied. "I'll pick you up at eight." Mom went home and sewed herself a new dress for her big date. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I grew up in the midwest in the 70's & 80's and I remember my older sister and I going to the playground and music lessons in the neighborhood on our bikes or walking alone. We did this as young as 7 or 8 years old. What age to kids start going out independently in NYC? I never see it except for large groups of older kids on the subway coming from school. Do people just keep nannies until the kids are in highschool? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I grew up in Manhattan (LES) and I know this city..the good and the bad. No WAY IN HELL will my dcs (I have 3) be in the streets alone as young as 7 yr old. My kids will start traveling the city alone when they show me they are mature enough to handle the situation. I started traveling around at 14yr old (when I went to HS). I'm old school when it comes to being careful. I'm street smart and don't trust anyone (strangers). My dad was a cop so I know from him what happens here when no one else knows. I hope to raise street smart kids...I won't hover but I will be watching until I know they could handle it [ Reply | More ]

most kids go to and from school on their own or in groups starting with middle school, so that 11. dd didn't have any kids in our neighborhood to travel with, so starting in 6th grade, I would walk her to the bus (which dropped her a block and a half from her school) in the morning, then in the afternoon I'd meet her and wait for the bus with her and her sitter would meet her at the other end. We don't have a doorman, so the part that worried me was her arriving home alone in the middle of the afternoon. We did that for a couple of years. now she's on her on and taking the subway (bus takes too long, mom!) [ Reply | More ]

This approach makes sense to me. Some kids are ready earlier than others--bolder, more level-headed, more trust-worthy, etc. I'd actually say that most kids today are smarter and more educated about staying away from creeps than we were. It's always a judgement call, but being independent is one of the great joys of being a city kid and most of them love the responsibility. Cell phones also ease the anxiety a lot once a kid is more independent--my 14y/o DD is given a lot of independence but all tied to her being responsible, safe and checking in freuqently. I also know her friends and make judgement calls on which ones are mature enough to be trusted and which ones would probably wander into traffic given a chance. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] UGH. Can a lawyer mom help me out here? My sisters constested my grandfather's estate. I wanted to be NO part of it (I was close with him and I knew he did not want us to inherit anything). My sisters did this out of greed b/c the estate was large. THe lawyer put my name on the proceedings regardless, supposedly as a mistake. In December, when I found this out, I told him to please remove my name. He claims he prepared the documents to do so, but as he was brining them to the court in January, he found out the case was going to settle. The case settled for legal fees, basically ($50K) and he wants me to sign the settlement and be done with it. On the one hand, I don't want to be cruel to my sisters (this whole thing has been terrible for our relationship, and despite their issues I love them), but at the same time, I don't want to be party to a legal settlement for soemthing I never wanted anything to do with in the first place. Should I make the lawyer fix the mistake at his expense, or just sign? Is the settlement taxable? Is it public record that I contested a will? What should I do???? 19 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

NO, the lawyer gets the $50K. The lawyers and the sisters are trying to shut OP up by "accidentally" putting her name on the complaint. I would definitely not sign. I think it is absolutely awful that your sisters challenged the will and then add your name to it. As you said it is not the intention of your grandfather. Take a stand and honor your grandfather's last wish. [ Reply | More ]

No...the lawyer did it. He thought the case would look worse if there were only some of the sisters on it. My sister claims that she told him form day one to take my name off. I am asking for her documentation. If it exists, can I force the lawyer to fix this on his own dime? [ Reply | More ]

It's slightly more complicated. One of my sisters signed a retainer, and put my name on the original document. She claims she then told him from day one to remove my name. Could she just have lopped my name on a lawsit? I can't imagine that her putting my name on a document counts as me consenting to be a plaintiff. [ Reply | More ]

The lawyer absolutely has to fix it — either your sisters lied to you and included your name anyway (maybe thinking you'd be happy when they got millions) -- or the lawyer is totally shady. You can't just put someone's name on a lawsuit. Who did they sue? Who is the trustee of your grandfather's estate? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 03.12.09, 05:11 AM Flag

np: I would not sign. Period. If the lawyer balks I would call the trustee (executor?) of the estate and tell him/her. (As a matter of fact, now that I think about it, I might call the estate's lawyer anyway. This is not your sister's money you are messing with, this is the lawyer's money. Why should he get paid for doing a shitty job at doing a shitty thing? Think about it. He is getting paid $50,000 from whoever your grandfather wanted his money to go to. That is unconscionable.) Someone, somewhere along the line forged your signature. He cannot become your lawyer w/o a signed retainer from you and I am assuming that you did not grant either of your sisters a power of attorney. If it is the lawyer who forged your signature or lied about the retainer, he needs to be reported to the bar association, if not the NYPD. [ Reply | More ]

I have a 10 month old and yes it's hard to meet new people. I'm fortunate in that I have a core group of friends who I met through a new mom support group when my dd was very young. We meet regularly once a week. As my dd has gotten older, there seem to be fewer SAHMs. The short-term SAHMs have returned to work at the 3, 6, and 9 month marks. So for babies in her age group, fewer moms and more nannies in classes. Try going to your neighborhood cafe, park, etc. at the same time each day and you're bound to run into other SAHMs with whom you'll become familiar and can strike up a conversation. But then there's always the issue of whether you like the person or not! [ Reply | More ]
