[ - ] Sorry I should realize by now that I should only post stupid-stuff-nobody-cares-about-question if I don't want to get flamed. I post a simple post about engaging my 20 month old's mind and all I get is flamed. If you all think it's not age appropriate, I don't really care, and for those of you who think I should send my dd to day care, I don't really care. If you all want to shove your kid in daycare so they will have mediocre lives (because their curriculum is not based on each child's specific needs and abilities to advance) than that's fine. However, I will raise my daughter the way I see fit and if you don't like it or don't have anything helpful to say then simple don't answer these posts. 31 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Of course it is - if she had an older DC she'd be freaking out about preschool or K admissions instead and if she had a younger DC she wouldn't have time for this crap! (I'd like to say she'd know better if she had an older DC but suspect, alas, that this wouldn't not be the case.) [ Reply | More ]

OK I felt bad that you were getting flamed but then you go ahead and post this. Listen, I have a freakin' job and I can think of a dozen things in the house that start with A. No one slammed you for being home with your kids, they slammed you for going nutty trying to find words that start with A, and you turn around and attack WOHM. Get an education. [ Reply | More ]

For your information I graduated at 16 with a 4.0 GPA because I chose to home-school myself. I've dona a lot of research on the capacity of kids minds and what they are capable of at this age. Just because people don't agree with me doesn't give them the right to flame me. So you know what, if you are going to flame me, be prepared to get flamed as well. I was posting the question on here because I was busy with my dd and thought everybody could me more ideas rather than spending time searching stuff on-line. Oh and by the way, I did get slammed for staying home with my kids so you need to reread my original post before you act like a know-it-all. Also, a lot of people on here weren't able to come up with a lot of A things either so apparently you must be a genius, since you can think up a dozen things that start with A. The most I got from others was about 4. [ Reply | More ]

I did read the post. You did not get slammed for staying at home with your kids. The daycare comment was directed at you personally, not SAHM as a whole. Your comment about kids in daycare leading mediocre lives, OTOH, was directed at WOHM as a whole. Let me introduce you to an "N" word called nuance. [ Reply | More ]

Take a pill Frieda-people have their own opinions and you did come to a hen party. It's gorgeous to nourish your kid but you're very offensive here. Until you have experienced the pre-k curriculums in nyc-down the line- you're not qualified to dismiss them as daycare or claim they lack differentiated attention. btw-have you got a window? 'Airplanes' are abundant above the city. Spill some milk-'Oops! an 'accident'. Incorporate reinforcement from toys and picture books. Mix it up. Your kid is 'smarter' than you know.Don't do this stuff for longer than 10 minutes at a time, unless the child is insistent. Even then, it's important to leave it before the novelty wears off. She's not even qualified to dismiss daycare as daycare. The one my DC attended did a better job at "differentiation" than the traditional preschools they later attended or DD's current kindergarten - they had a range of ages and abilities in the class, and very highly-qualified creative teachers. Her Dad was a fanous TV producer (St. Elsewhere). Her mom's a famous actress. Her "Uncle Steven"/Godfather who gave her her first role in Hook is Steven Spielberg. She is the definition of a mediocre and often bad actress not making it on her own. If she was actually talented- that would be one thing- but shes really not. HYPERBOLE MOM SAYS: No, part of the reason he pled guilty was to avoid a court trial during which he'd be questioned about the whereabouts of the money, the role of his family etc. This way, he doesn't have to say anything. However, his family members and some of his close associates might spill the beans. According to thedailybeast, the Feds are closing in on Ruthie, the two sons, the brother, the niece, a few SEC officials and a bunch of lawyers and bankers in London who were laundering the money. May they all rot in jail - preferably in the same cell. [ Reply | More ]

Well - the judge has no leverage with him. The minimum sentence under guidelines is 20 years - which for a 70-year old man is essentially life in prison. So why should he talk? What can the judge give him in exchange for the information? He can't give him a shorter sentence for complying, nor can he give him a harsher sentence, since he's already in jail for life. There is no bargaining chip. However, the judge will be able to bargain with the younger Madoffs; I'll limit your sentence to 20 years instead of life if you tell me where the money is. Or maybe dear mama Ruth will spill the beans to protect her brood - though I doubt it. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My not-yet-school-aged son's birthday is late December and I know the NYC age cutoff for K is 12/31. Does this mean he is destined, without question, to be literally the youngest kid in his class and there's nothing I can do about it? I know they're anti-"red shirting" and make it difficult. But is there truly nothing to be done? Do I have no say at all? I see these posts about kids repeating Kindergarten -- is that just private school? We have the option of using a private school (sibling goes there at the moment, though we're thinking of leaving for public) where the cutoff is July and db would be in a different year than he would at public school. what would happen if he did preK and K at the private school and then switched to public. Having just finished K he would be ready for 1st grade, but age-wise the public school would want him in 2nd. Would they really make him skip a grade? I know this sounds obsessive, but my daughter is the youngest kid in her private pre-K and it's a big problem, she's almost a year younger than others in her class and she's so much less ready emotionally. TIA. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

This is your option as long as you realize there are some schools that are strict about class ages. I had a dd that was born on the last day before the cut-off. I have always regretted not holding her back a year. For boys, there can be an advantage to being older and bigger (especially for sports). Do whatever you think is right for your ds long-term. But WHAT is my option? I want to hold him back, but I fear if we go public we won't have that option, will be forced to put him in Kindergarten as a four-year-old, not to turn 5 till almost January. Is my only option to start him in private? When you say there are some schools that are strict about class ages are you talking public or private? I would assume all the city publics have teh same rules, no? (The private we would just has a summer cut-off so it's clear which side he falls on.) Thanks for your response. [ Reply | More ]

It is the privates that are strict about age. As far as I know, it is your choice in public - either when to start or when to repeat. With a bday that late, I would expect publics to listen to your opinion and work with you on this. Call your public and talk to somebody about it. [ Reply | More ]

Public schools in NYC will categorically not hold him back no matter how much you complain. In a NYC public school, your son will always be the youngest in his grade. Unless, of course, they start holding him back later in his education, aka "left back," but you won't want that to happen. Even if you start in a private, they will ALWAYS consider the year that he was born as the year that he enters. ALL 2002 births, for example, are in 1st grade. [ Reply | More ]

Seriously? That means that a kid with a December birthday who starts at a private school with a summer cut-off, or a public in a different state with a fall cut-off (both of which would start him a year later than the NYC publics)moves to a NYC public school after a couple years elsewhere, they will force him to skip a whole grade of school rather than be out of phase with the rest of the kids' birthdays? NO! They can force a kid to skip K and start in 1st grade, bc K is not required in New York. They cannot force a kid to skip another grade the same way. So if dc does preK & K at a private school, public school cannot force him into 2nd grade, so then he'd go to 1st grade. [ Reply | More ]

I think this is totally tacky. It is okay to just have a few friends to sleep over, but to play games about it and make it a big secret is wrong. It is all in the way it is presented. [ Reply | More ]

Funny you should say that bec the mother positioned it as not leaving out the other 8 who are not sleeping over. She would only let her ds have four boys sleep over, so she invited the others for the first part of the party. [ Reply | More ]

the recipe for disaster: a birthday party (age 8). 12 boys invited. Four of them are secretly invited to sleep over. The other eight go home at 8:00pm. The four who were invited to sleep over were told not to tell the other boys so as not to "hurt their feelings." Now add a little time and mix. [ Reply | More ]

Boy, I don't know. It all depends on how friendly you are with the parents, how close the kids are, so many variables, you know? I'm not one for taking a stand on something, but unless this was my best friend and our kids were best friends, I would opt out of staying over just to avoid any fallout. [ Reply | More ]

They are pretty good friends. I told ds that he doesn't have to feel pressured to keep the secret. If it comes up, he can tell the truth (he wan't the one who spilled the beans, btw). I tink it's too stressful for kids to be warned to keep this secret. [ Reply | More ]

how did you find out? I would seriously take the source into consideration. [ - ] Has anyone ever been asked to move on an MTA bus while traveling with a stroller and I child? I had a rude busdriver today who wanted me to move (I've never been asked to move) - with my 2 year old, stroller and 9 month pregnant self to the back of the bus. Just wondering if being asked to move has ever happened to anyone else. Just thought this was unusally rude, especially when I have never been asked before. 30 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Definitely folded. The driver even threatened to call patrol if I didn't move. And the weird thing is I have taken the bus a lot in the last few months with my daughter, stroller, and huge pregnant belly and have never been asked to move. As long as it is folded. And I am always very conscious of people getting on the bus, and trying to make sure stroller is not in their way as they get on. [ Reply | More ]

Lady, the VAST majority of us here have been pregnant--often while we had toddlers! Amazing, I know. If you are at the front of the bus, there's a very good chance that someone will pay their fare, turn left and trip right over your stroller. The world doesn't revolve around you. [ Reply | More ]

Sympathy? She's riding a bus--not walking 5 miles in a blizzard. You have to exit through the rear door, according to MTA website. Having her drag her stroller out the front would leave those wanting to get on waiting on the curb and delay the bus for others. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a dad and when I travel with my kids I keep them in the front most seats I can get. If a handicapped person comes on I relinquish them. Otherwise I seat them, ideally, right behind the driver. It is the safest place on the bus to be and that is my primary concern. [ Reply | More ]

Wow, in Buffalo, Ny pregnant women, people with children and elderly get special treatment on the bus. The bus kneels for them and the driver even asks others at the front of the bus to make room for the new person. The driver even asks where they need to get dropped off at so the driver knows to stop ahead of time and they do not miss their stop. Different worlds. [ Reply | More ]
