well - we really feel that C is far & away our fc so after much thought we sent our letter. now we're not getting any good feedback from schools and feel that if these 'lesser schools' (for lack of a better term) don't want ds - we don't have a shot a C. That's rough. I don;t think C often gives much feedback, but it sounds like your ds would have had to have a had a truly fabulous playdate to be in the running. I do think that C really looks at child's personality and intellectual liveliness(for lack of a better word) and also considers strongly the preschool teachers (not director's) report. You think your finances are going to change that much in one year? Also, if your child is old enough for public pre-K it will be TWO years before s/he can go to private K based on cut-offs so I'd do a little research first. [ Reply | More ]

Depends where you are. We are in Brooklyn Heights area and our area was mostly sib accepts for the publics. So I imagine any good school would not have many slots. They do a second round a month or so after and give you a list of available schools but for us most were in Bed Stuy or farther away, though there was one decent and/or convenient school on there but who knows how many spaces it had. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

Just wanted to add to this, you might want to poke around with parents in your area who have been through this process and see what schools were available in the second round that you would consider. I would have applied to the one decent/convenient school had I known I'd have a better shot, but by the time the second round came, we'd already committed to a private. [ Reply | More ]

The odds from a public preK are just as good as getting into a private K from a private preschool. In fact, if you are unconnected, it's probably even better. Most private ongoing schools don't have space in preKs (if they even have them) for anyone but siblings, so everyone is applying out from preK. You have the same shot as anyone else. And any school that didn't want a kid from a public vs private preK simply because of whether it was public or private isn't a "decent" K in my book. [ Reply | More ]

The public pre-K spots are pretty coveted and you should focus on whatever school you are zoned for since that is likely the only prek you have a good shot at getting admitted to. I don't know anything about the upper east side schools and which ones have preks but you should go to insideschools.org There are often spots in some out of zone preks available, but usually at the schools that are less desirable. If you get into a preK at a good public school, you might even find you prefer public all the way through. [ Reply | More ]

The difference is no where near as great as everyone here seems to believe. The younger dc is a stronger reader and writer than our dc at A, while dc at A is stronger in math. The teachers at both schools have been mostly very good, although the best teacher so far was at the gen ed. Thank you for this. It is a relief to read. Oldest is at A, and even though it's a few yrs away, we could easily end up in same situation as you with younger sibling. So far, we love A, and I think difference betw A and gen ed is probably minimal early on. But I do get the sense that as you get closer to middle school, maybe difference expand and A pulls away from the gen ed? Just a thought. [ Reply | More ]

np: I also have a dc in good public gen ed. FYI -- in many districts the middle schools are tracked anyway. Kids must rank their choices and are accepted according to their test scores and grades. So my guess is that the difference between Anderson middle school and another district wide "gifted" one is small. In fact, my suspicion is that the kids at the "gifted" ones are likely even better academically since they are chosen after they've proven themselves, not based on some test when they were 4. I see your point. I don't know enough information to really have an informed view at this stage. ^^One more thought. There are several reasons to maintain this dialogue. By doing so, you are holding out hope for him (and you) that you brother is capable of acheiving some sort of stability in the future. If he reaches that place, he'll be able to forgive you for cutting him off. But it is very hard to forgive (even if he understands why you did it) a relative that cuts you off from their children. This could be 10 years of photos and thankyou notes rather than visits, but it's better than nothing. Also, as your dc grows, she will know she has an uncle who loves her (but who is troubled), which is so much healthier than having the uncle that is there but nobody talks about and she has been protected from. good luck. $500 in up-state NY for initial meeting and the birth. They are worth it. There should be one at your birthing class you can ask. Book them ahead. And make a wish list, but expect to be flexible. Things happen. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] UWS Preschool Choices. I'm torn between Claremont and St. Hilda's/St. Hugh's. I sent 1st choice letter to Claremont, but it was due before my child's play session at St. Hildas where she had a great time and I got to see the school for the first time in a few months and remembered how great it is. Any parents out there who considered these two schools? 67 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We are at SHSH. We simply love it. I cannot tell you how wonderful the place is ... For pre-school, since this is what you are considering at the moment ... children have music, art, movement, languages (choice between French, Chinese, Spanish) in addition to their regular activities (circle time, building etc.). What I really like is approach of the teachers towards the emotional /social development of their children and the way they help children talk about their feelings, deal with anger/frustration. Teachers are so experienced, so caring ... and so good at understanding the children ! best of luck to you. [ Reply | More ]

another issue for me is location. because of morningside park being in my way, we'd have to take cab or car service to school everyday at SH/SH, except in nice weather we can walk and cut through the park. SHSH parent: SHSH It k-8, so tiers don't apply. education is clearly comparable to schools that are ranked TT. just ask the admissions office to give you a list of the high-schools where the 8th grade graduates go -- you will see that most children have their choice of high school and go to places such as Brearley, Collegiate, Spence, Dalton but also Stuy or Bronx Science. The academics are fantastic, the environment warm and supportive, families are great.... what else do you want ? [ Reply | More ]

It's also one of the few places that has real visible diversity in the student body, and some students will go to top Catholic schools like Regis (although SHSH is not Catholic itself). Top boarding schools too. [ Reply | More ]

Personally, I think SHSH is as good as the TTs - although it's only K-8. There's only a couple TTs I would even consider over it (and a few I would never send my dc to no matter what) It will never be called "TT" here though because it has developed its rep too recently, since the current head took over. Don't be fooled by the UB obsessions with TT however. [ Reply | More ]

Well then should I send dd to a preschool only like Claremont or Weekday School, as opposed to an ongoing school like SH/SH that caters to so many ages. It struck me as odd at the SH/SH open house that the head of the school talked about the focus on k-8 as superior to k-12, because they don't deal with high school or teenage issues, and instead focus on children. Can't the same argument be made in favor of dedicated preschools (2s-4s)? That they focus on toddlers and arent distracted by issues involving tweens, etc. [ Reply | More ]

the argument in the comparison btw. k-8 and k-12 schools was that in a k-12 school a disproportionately high amount of resources is distributed towards students in grades 9-12, but all students pay same tuition. seems to be pretty intuitive, given the higher number of subjects in high-school (hence a larger amount of the schools budget is allocated to paying teachers' salaries for high school teachers). in other words, lower grades students "subsidize" higher grades students. this subsidization from lower and middle school to high school is less pronounced in a k-8 school -- it's still present, of course, lower grades students always subsidize higher grade students, but it is just less pronounced. I don't think preschool is important enough for this to matter. It goes by in a flash, so better to take the ongoing spot at SHSH if you like the school since the K-8 is so phenomenal (and the prek great too as far as I can tell) Of course, securing a fc high school spot is one reason to choose a K-12, but it's different because so much can change in those years. Also, if you end up at a K-12 that is not your first choice, it will actually be harder to transfer somewhere else for high school than if you're at a top rate K-8 where you will have full exmissions support. There's no single right answer here, but the ongoing process is brutal and selective and I would think twice about turning down a spot at some place as excellent as SHSH should you get in just because you like Claremont more as a prek. 9th grade seems like an awkward time to change from private to private. I know I'm basing this partly on my own expereince, having gone to public elementary and private 7-12. We send three kids to SHSH and believe we found the perfect school. The academics are very strong, as is the music and language courses. It is a small school and has a small town type feel. There are many families with multiple kids and the school is small so it is very difficult to get in -- if you get a spot, don't pass it up. We know many others in the area who have been trying to get in for the past few years. Also have friends at Claremont but I think SHSH is much better and you don't have the competition between parents trying to work through the exmissions process that just makes for a terrible environment that you don't have to deal with at the preschools with ongoing schools.
