I don't know Dr. Morrell personally, but he was recommended to me by my own therapist (whom I love). I did not choose him as I found his fee was very high & I found someone else who did a fine job for a lot less money.

Our school psychologist (mainstream) liked Morrell and didn't like Steinberg, FWIW. I couldn't get into Morrell, but a friend let me see the report he wrote for her child - extremely thorough.

Happens! I didn't get my period for two months. Did a test - neg. Went to gyn, he did a test - neg. One month after I found out I was pregnant. At the first sonogram (I was supposed to be at 6 weeks), dr. said baby looked at least 8wo. (m) at the 12w sonogram, the person at the hospital told me she couldn't do the test (nt) because baby was at least 16w/o. At that point I was nearly hoping to give birth the month after :-)

I too was surprised about what was written about LREI, but it is true that lots of folks down here are sending their kids to PS 41, and these are families who could afford private school. Reading this board makes you think everyone wants a private school.

It's possible. However, I am an old time NYer & still view these schools with suspicion. Just because they are filled with banker kids doesn't make them dalton you know? But I do try to keep my views silent most of the time so there's less competit for my kid if we have to go uptown!

He won't sleep in his crib -- prefers our bed, goes to bed at night anywhere between 8 and 11 pm, and usually has to be nursed to sleep after a long time fussing. He wakes a few times a night fussing, and I usually have to nurse him to get him to (m) sleep again. He takes naps at random times, and can't just be put in his crib. He either needs to be held and rocked, or he falls asleep in his stroller. He takes really short naps, and wakes up crying because he's still tired.

Here's what I did: I established my ds's nap schedule per Weissbluth. That is, a nap after no more than 2 hrs. of wakefulness. I established a naptime routine. That is, close the blinds, put on soothing music at a low volume, pacifier and rock to nap. Even if he slept for 20 mins, he went down two hrs. later the same way until bedtime. I established a bedtime routine of bath, massage, bottle of bm, and bed. Sometimes he wakes up and we pick him up and he burps or just goes back down again without incident. We give him a pacifier. The naptime routine got much better within 1-2 wks. You've got to work hard at it and be committed. When my 8.5 mo ds wakes anytime after 4 am, I nurse him and bring him into bed with me until 6-7 am. Some babies need to "learn" how to sleep but they need their mommy to implement routines so that they can follow the cues. It doesn't happen overnight, but it's worth the work. I'd rather not CIO while my db is teething, gassy, etc. I feel that as an adult, we have lots of restless nights and know they are not easy. If you must resort to CIO, read Ferber who suggests going in at 5 min intervals to assure your db you are still there, but it is time to sleep. Have you tried NCSS (No Cry Sleep Solution)? Good luck.

OR: I began at 3 mo. I bf ds. I fed around the nap schedule as that was the most important thing to me. His nap schedule has fallen into place -- 9 am, 1 pm, 4 pm. 45-45-30 mins. Bedtime at 7:30. (m) He nurses at 5 am, 7 am. Breakfast at 8 am (cereal & fruit). Nap at 9-9:45. Nurse betw. 10:30-11. Lunch at 12. Nap at 1-1:45/2. Nurse at 3/3:30. Nap at 4/4:15 (30 mins). Dinner at 5 (veggie & fruit). May nurse at 6. Bathtime at 7/7:15, massage, dh gives bedtime btl, bed. Now he's 8.5 months so he stays up longer intervals but not more than 3 hrs ever! My mom just started babysitting 10 days a month and she says he is a dream to care for as he knows exactly what to do at those set times. Now I'm teaching him to self-soothe by rocking him and putting him down while still awake. She just called to say he wants to be put down with eyes open! I just started that a week ago. They learn fast. Hang in there.

no no it's 2 hours from end of nap to beginning of nesxt. So only 2 hours of wakefulness at a time.

Yeah, that so sounds like my DD. We were on the verge to actually do CIO with her but never got the nerves to actually do that (plus, you just don't do that to a young baby, anyway :). We sat it out. It took a few more months and without any "training" methods she now sleeps through at 14 months. It will happen eventually.

My ds just regressed at 6.5 mos. He's now 7 mos and I rushed out to B&N this weekend and bought Weissbluth's book. I haven't started yet, as I haven't read enough. But from what I read so far, I think we're going to go for it.

Weissbluth is quite harsh on CIO. Why don't you try the nap schedule first. Is your ds teething? If so, you might want to try a little Tylenol before bed. Does he take a pacifier?

OP here: I'm reading Ferber. Is he less harsh than Weissbluth? DS may be teething, but really his sleep habits always were really screwede fault. Our fault, I guess. We let him do whatever he wanted.

CIO is harsh to a baby in any method used but Ferber sounds more humane to me in that you keep going in at longer intervals 5-10-15 mins, assuring db you have not abandoned them. Some babies truly have sleep problems. Most don't. Most need our (m) Patience, commitment to naps/bedtime, a routine to signal to them it is time to sleep (dark rooms, soft music, quieting down, etc.), and we need to catch our babies in their first signals of sleepiness -- first yawn, rubbing eyes, fussing -- which occurs within 2 hrs of wakefulness. You do admit it's probably your fault that you let him do what he wanted but poor little guy doesn't know what to do to sleep or how to do it. Don't be hard on yourself either, as new parents we don't know what to do. Babies do not come with manuals. But we are the adults and we can draw from deep within and find patience, empathy, and respect for our babies. Please give him a chance with gentler methods before resorting to CIO.

Keep reading Weissbluth and you'll see several suggestions identical to those here. You'll also learn why if you are going to CIO, full extinction is preferable to partial (e.g., Ferber). I know it's counter-intuitive, but much about babies' sleep i

There were a couple choices in Weissbluth's book. You don't have to use the 'extinction' method as he describes total CIO. I know that I cannot leave my DS to just cry his brains out for too long. I can't imagine it's all that healthy. (m) But if he is in 'normal' spirits- ie not having a teething fit, then I think letting him cry for a few minutes in the middle of the night as opposed to constantly getting up and nursing him is a better approach to getting him to sleep through the night. At 7 mos, he should be able to get through till the morning. Or at least get through with only 1 night feeding as opposed to 3 or 4 (don't you think that's too much?).

That's what we're doing, and it's not working. I'd give it time if it seemed to be improving, but things are getting worse.

We were in the same boat with our 11 mo old son. We were dedicated to the No Cry Sleep Solution, but it wasn't working after months. Then son fixed it for us - just started sleeping from 9 until 6. Who knew?

Exactly my point. It is probably very hatd for parents in OP's position to believe this. But it is true. Most babies change their sleeping habbits to the better from one night to the other. Hang in there, OP! :)

OP here: Thanks, will try to avoid CIO for now. We're going on vacation soon anyway, so we'll wait and see. Maybe a miracle will happen and DS will start sleeping better!

Of course, it works most of the time. A baby is a human being just like you and me and every will can be broken. In the end it is a fight between you and your baby and the strongest will win.

NP: We did CIO for 5.5 mo ds after months of night wakings and terrible naps. We were scared by the anti-CIO UB moms so we tried Baby Whisperer, NCSS, Dr. Sears... nothing worked. It took 3 days of CIO & ds slept thru. (m) I'm not saying you have to do CIO, it's a tough decision. But also don't be scared by the anti-CIOers into thinking it won't work or your baby will be scarred or whatever. It was so hard for me to hear our ds cry for the first few nights but in the end I think that this was the best thing for him. Nothing else worked. I hope for your sake that your dc will grow out of it but we couldn't wait, as his sleep habits kept getting worse and he kept getting up more frequently thru the night and was always tired and cranky. Now he is well rested and happy, and I can actually be productive at work too after sleeping for more than a 2 hr stretch at a time. Good luck!

I don't think I'm the person you asked to hear from, since we weren't consistent, but I'll just add the middle-of-the-night CIO didn't work for us, maybe due to our inconsistency, but bedtime CIO was a LIFESAVER. So if you're hesistant, I would say start by giving DS an opportunity to learn to go to sleep on his own at bedtime and see if that doesn't help him sleep throught the night. In the meantime, if he wakes at night, just give him a few minutes to see if he'll go back to sleep, then go to him. We also gave up on naptime CIO and just nurse/bottle/rock DD to sleep at naptimes. By the way, CIO is not about breaking DB's will, it's about giving them a chance to learn self-soothing skills. Believe me, DD does not hesitate to let us know, at any time, if she is unhappy.
