[ - ] Native Floridian moving to upstate New York- have some questions about winter wear for young kids. Do kids wear long underwear to school under regular clothes? What about shoes- wear snow boots and bring regular shoes, too? Waterproof pants to play outside over regular pants? Any other obvious things I should know? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Schools are heated during the winter. You really only need to make your kid comfortable during their commute, if necessary (buses are heated, too, but bus stops are not), but that involves layers that your kid can shed at school. Long underwear can't really be taken off that easily. Long underwear is really for when you are going to be outside in cold temperatures for many hours at a time. Snow boots are for when there's snow on the ground, which is not every day these days with the climate jumping around as much as it does now. Elementary schools like you to have snow pants for your kid if they have outdoor recess - if they don't have snow pants and boots they will not be permitted to play in the snow and have to stand in the cleared area for the duration of recess (20-25 minutes) [ Reply | More ]

I’ve never been asked to bring snow pants to school. They have indoor recess when it’s very cold or blacktop recess when there is snow, mud, etc on the playground. [ Reply | More ]

Could be different where you are. At our elementary school kids could play in the snow on the playing fields but only if they had snow pants, boots, gloves, etc. If you didn't have these things you had to stay at the picnic tables with the aides and do whatever else, bounce the ball or whatever. mine wears a thermal shirt under her regular clothes on cold days. just sneakers to school unless there is snow. Then wears snow boots and sneakers go in her backpack. donr do waterproof pants to school, only if going to park on snowy day. If there's THAT much snow, school is closed. They wont play much in the snow at recess. just throwing a few snowballs [ Reply | More ]

Public schools are hot as hell in the winter. My kids wear layers and usually are in t-shirts during regular classroom time. Also, recess isn't that long, so if they're a little underdressed, NBD. No one gets frostbite in 20 minutes. [ Reply | More ]

?? Is it possible that they just love to ski? Because that's why we go west every year to ski - there's no ice (like there is on the east coast), and some of the resorts even capacity control lift tickets so it's not even that crowded. Yes, prices are high, but our family goes on our "big vacation" in the winter to ski instead of going on a big vacation during the summer because it's something we all love. It has absolutely nothing to do with signaling anything to anyone. [ Reply | More ]

I also won a $25,000 bonus and weeks stay in Jamaica. The awards dinner runs until late on my wife’s birthday. Her birthday is not a milestone. [ - ] My 8 year old niece is a sweet girl, but has intense anxiety, low self esteem, and a plethora of other internal difficulties. Their family moved to our city this last summer and she goes to school with my similarly aged kids. She has told my 5 year old not to wear certain clothes that make her look “fat”, repeated her mother’s rude remarks about other kids to my kids and suffers from extreme jealousy of anything my kids get that she doesn’t. I feel terrible for her because I know how difficult it must be to feel so upset all the time, but at the same time I would like to protect my normal, happy kids from her barrage of anxious, negative, jealous thoughts on a daily basis. We currently see them every day. Is it fair to slow fade or am I being selfish and should take a larger role in niece’s life? 26 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Don't know if this is your sister's kid or DHs brother or what but you need to spend time with her parents, point out the weirdness of what she's saying to your kids. "Wow, where would an 8 year old get the idea that she needs to worry about fat? I feel awful for her." Try to address it with them in that way, don't punish your niece for her parents' mistakes. It’s my dh’s sister. I have been trying this to no avail. When I told her about the fat comment she claimed she had no idea where she would have heard that. Meanwhile she makes comments about her own and other people’s bodies constantly. My niece was a chubby toddler (not obese, just round), and she feels shame when she sees pictures of herself at 2. She’s constantly trying to eat healthier, etc. she just turned 8 last month and is very thin. I feel awful for her. [ Reply | More ]

Poster below with similar DD again. I'm sorry the parents are so hard to work with. That definitely makes it a lot more difficult. We are very well aware of our DD's behavior and are very proactive. We don't defend her behavior or act like it is no big deal. Our friends and family know that we are all over it, see a therapist and otherwise do everything we can. Thank you for responding. You sound like a great mom. Her parents have given us permission to take her to counseling, but only every other week. It has helped, but doesn’t even scratch the surface of being enough. They know something is wrong with her, but they’re mostly annoyed by it. Lots of yelling and ignoring going on. I feel terrible for my niece, but it is so incredibly taxing for all of us to be around her so often. Are there things that you do so that people don’t feel that way about your daughter? Do you also find it exhausting? [ Reply | More ]

Why are her parents so uninvolved? Why would they want you to take her to therapy? My DD had been on an amazing stretch until just recently. Now we are in a bad patch and yes, it is utterly exhausting. I feel frustrated, tired, emotional and often like I'm totally failing at motherhood. Therapy helped my DD a LOT, so stick with it. Took a little while to see results, but it made a world of difference. We stopped going at the suggestion of the therapist, but we need to go back now due to some recurring issues. I think people see that we are trying our best. My DD doesn't sound quite as outwardly difficult as your niece though. Mine will withdraw from a group and play alone and generally saves her worst behavior for home. There have been some recent issues at school that we need to address and we will go back to therapy for those. My close friends and the school admin know how much we struggle with it and how deeply we care. We don't ignore it, we certainly don't contribute to it and we always address it head on. They agreed that she needed therapy, but didn’t want to deal with it. Our church has lpcs on staff, so every other Sunday she comes with us and then stays for therapy afterward. Her parents are unwilling to be proactive and just blame her for her shortcomings. She definitely saves her worst behavior for home, but our house, too. She has weeks at school with no outward difficulties other than crying and anxiety. She does withdraw, but her lack of self esteem coupled with the jealousy makes her think everyone is out to get her. She assumes peers are making fun of her when they’re not and takes everything my kids say as insults. She is constantly telling me what my kids and the kids at school have said and how it hurts her feelings. It’s usually completely innocent remarks that she’s convinced are mean and directed at her. My kids love her, but it’s exhausting for them and they’ve asked if we could have her over less often. [ Reply | More ]

Poor kid. She does sound similar to mine, but clearly lacks love and support from her parents. That is a recipe for disaster. Mine is a middle and feels she gets less of everything than the other two....even if we perceive it very differently. She's VERY sensitive and hides that with a tough exterior. But like your niece, she perceives innocent comments to be an insult towards her. She then retaliates with an insult, but she's the only one that gets in trouble because the first kid's comment was actually pretty benign. So she feels unfairly singled out and the cycle continues. Stick with the therapy. I promise it helps. And I think you are an AMAZING aunt and uncle to take this on. It is hard enough doing it for my own child, but to do it for someone else's? My hat is off to you OP. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. I appreciate that. I like her parents as people, but they are seriously lacking as parents. I love my niece and I want for her to be ok. Your daughter has you as her incredible advocate and she is so lucky. My dh and I do what we can, but it never feels like enough and it’s so hard on the dynamic of our very chill, easy going family for her to constantly be at our house. I have 4 kids and all together they are 100x easier than a couple of hours with her. I think the answer might be to schedule more one on one time with just her and I and let the kids have a break. In my case, my DD was diagnosed with anxiety and major depressive disorder. She also has painfully low self esteem. But we don't make any comments about bodies, weight, etc. We model healthy eating and regular exercise, but everyone still enjoys ice cream, cookies, etc. All of us are normal weight. I have three kids and only one has these issues, so I don't think it is our parenting. Its just the way her brain works. It sounds like OP's sil makes comments that contribute to the issue for her niece. I can comfortably say we don't do that. We work VERY hard to do just the opposite. [ Reply | More ]

This post and the heinous responses are truly a new low. THIS FAMILY JUST LOST THEIR CHILD. They may not have been perfect, but here you stand judging their cabinetry and Bronxville-ness? Heaven help those of you who have it all... may you never experience the pain of losing a loved one other than your parents. [ Reply | More ]

what the fuck was the university supposed to do, appoint him a full time babysitter to follow him around and make sure he didn't do any drugs? The university is not your mommy. It's the job of the parents to keep tabs on the emotional health of their teenagers, not the job of the university. [ Reply | More ]

I don't care about how they look or their kitchen, I care that they neglected their kid and couldn't be bothered to attend to his mental health crisis because they were too busy with their TT jobs. A lot of good those TT jobs will do them now. They now have a dead son, they will forever be known as bad parents, and they will be paying for therapy bills for their daughter for many years to come. That is, if she doesn't die too from a drug overdose that these self centered parents fail to notice in time all over again. [ Reply | More ]

If both parents have TT jobs, then don't bother having kids. If you can't be bothered to keep a relationship with your teenage kid when they are at college and fail to act on hospitalizations and clear signs of drug abuse, you have no business being a parent. [ Reply | More ]

The lady who does housekeeping at my work lost her 26 yo son to an overdose. She had taken him to rehab 4 times including out of state, and he lived with her and her dh of 40 years. He was their only child. I think she did everything she could. Her own mother died on a park bench drunk decades earlier. [ Reply | More ]

My condolences to the dead kids's sister for her loss and to his friends for their loss. Fuck his negligent parents. Their kid was hospitalized. They should have put him in rehab immediately after that red flag. They didn't even go check in on him at college until winter break? what the actual fuck. What assholes. [ Reply | More ]

Unless you know this family and their details, you really don't know whether they did everything they could or not, based on how an article is written. While it may be fun to judge online, hopefully some people are doing so lightheartedly. Addiction, self-medicating behaviors, and mental health problems are complex issues that do not exist in a vacuum. It is eye-opening to see how little perspective some of the posters here have. Wear a helmet. Take a lesson first. Don’t try to ski beyond his comfort zone (more advanced trails or faster than he feels he can manage). Stop when tired. Many people get ready to stop for the day, then say “one last run!” and that’s when they get injured, because their legs are tired. [ Reply | More ]

We have a house in Jackson, WY. Go about 4-6 weeks in the winter and 6-8 in the summer. We're in the town (12 miles from the village) and love it. If we were only going for a week here and there to ski I would rather be in the village, but we go for longer periods so I like to be in town better. More restaurants, music, community, trailhead out our back door for mountain biking, trail running. Kids can ride their bikes all over. [ Reply | More ]

I often cook the meats on Sunday and then add the veg throughout the week. Roast pork shoulder and braised chicken thighs are both great proteins that can go with almost any cuisine. The other prep you can do is to chop vegetables and toss them with oil and seasonings so that they are ready to roast during the week. Then you put a cut of meat, like a side of salmon or small eye round, on top and roast at 400 for 30 minutes or so. You can always add the meat later if you have a smaller cut or prefer it more rare. On Sunday, I bake bread, a big batch of cookies, and make tomato sauce and a pot of soup for one weeknight dinner. I also prepare snacks (popcorn, roasted nuts, etc.) and cut up veggies/fruit and make hard boiled eggs for the week for packed lunches. On Wednesday I bake another loaf of bread. We always have homemade pizza for dinner on Saturday night and tacos on Sunday. We rarely eat out. It's a lot of work, but I like doing it. [ Reply | More ]
