[ - ] Our neighbor across the street has kids around my son's age. We've had them over but every time they invite us it's literally a few days before and we have plans. I find this so weird- if you actually want to see someone why not try a bit more than a few days before? So she just now asked if we're free for dessert on Saturday, again I responded that we have something going on. Would I be a jerk for commenting that maybe we want to plan a bit in advance? ty 25 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If you really want to socialize with them, invite them to something. If you don't, don't say anything. Sounds like you have enough going on already. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I've invited her to lunch and the whole family to dinner. I do want to socialize with them but I'm not interested in having them over again. I don't have much going on at all, actually, just seemingly the times she suggested. And if you plan more than a few days in advance you can make things work. [ Reply | More ]

It's hard to be friends with someone who's not as rigidly scheduled in advance as you are? If they are nice people to you enjoy spending time with and your kids get along, just tell her, I really have a pretty busy schedule but I would love to come over, can we plan it? I mean that's really all there is to it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: this is great, I like the wording. I think it's weird to assume that everyone is available whenever you want to be "spontaneous"...when I actually want to see someone I figure out a time that works for both of us [ Reply | More ]

PP (not OP). I would plan ahead to see people I want to see. Sounds like in the OP's case, it's kind of an afterthought -- Hey, we have nothing going on Saturday, who might be free? Not the same as seeking out someone's company. If they weren't neighbors, would they stay "friends"? [ Reply | More ]

OP: Yep, this sounds about right. Not sure we're actually "friends" so it's all fine with me. And the fact that invitations are for "dessert", so it might be just fine if it's the last time this works out [ Reply | More ]

Some families are more spontaneous than others. All you could really say is, or we would have loved to if we had known sooner. Maybe that is a way to give her a hint that you like to have a little bit more notice and are more of a planner [ Reply | More ]

Obviously you wouldn't be a jerk, you would be giving her necessary information. Say "I'm so sorry we've had to turn down your last few invitations. We would love to get together, our schedules are just so crazy that we need to plan further ahead." Then be OK with them not being able to do that, because some people can't for various reasons. I didn't take it like that - I agree, it could be a great mom job! I used to tease her that she was doing it wrong - that she could make it much, much easier. She worked for many years and I think it was great when I was young (schedule-wise, though I went to school elsewhere). I fantasize about a job in a school office with no responsibility - but I don't know if those even exist anymore. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that there is too much of it (and not too classy) to my taste but it looks like this is what "average" viewers want unfortunately. And popular characters could be dropped pretty easily. [ Reply | More ]

I always cringe when attractive American women fall for the British thing. I did that in college, and am so ashamed at the memory of how ugly and unsexy these dudes were. The worst memory is of this skinny, bone-white freckled hand slowly moving across my torso. The hand belonged to a horse-faced virgin (until me) who wasn't even very nice. I figured I had a thing for Brits so I moved to England after college, but when everyone speaks with that accent, it's almost like nobody does. I didn't date anyone. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am SO resentful of in-laws that I am now dreading Thanksgiving tomorrow. We are hosting and once again, they did not respect our wishes, crossed boundaries and it just turns into an argument w/DH and me. Ultimately he always ends up "siding" with me but normally without a fight or I end up just having to suck it up and let them do what they want b/c I feel guilty "ruining" the holiday. I'm due very soon with our second & this shit has been going on since before our first was born. I am hormonal, stressed and already a high strung and anxious person. I don't know how I'm going to hold it in and be nice tomorrow when MIL starts her manipulative bullshit tomorrow. 82 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The latest issue is we asked them not to bring their dog (I posted about this last night) and somehow they are bringing the dog! I know MIL will bring it up directly to me and I don't think I am going to be "nice" about it this time. I want to say something like "you know, we have asked you in the past not to bring the dog & then you all do what you want which puts us in the position of having to tell you not to come or puts us in an uncomfortable position with our co-op board and worrying about our dc (the dog snapped at dc a year ago). It also puts stress on my relationship with your son which I really don't appreciate, especially during pregnancy" [ Reply | More ]

I guess you're right. I do want to mention the dog snapping though b/c that was the main reason last year. We just purchased our home in September and moved to this new place. So now it is 2 reasons, first b/c the dog snapped and second b/c we are not supposed to have the dog. We are approved for our dog and there our dogs allowed in the building so I doubt it will be an issue, but if we DO get reprimanded I just do NOT feel like dealing with it. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I don't think you've been standing up for yourself and being clear enough with DH how stressful this is for you. When offered the choice of them either bringing the dog or not coming, he should have jumped at the chance to say "Sorry, it won't work out this year then" and take care of YOU (while you are pregnant!) and have a nice relaxing Thanksgiving without them. Instead you are saying "okay" and "okay" while screaming inside. this is very bad for you and your dc. Tell DH you need him to take care of his family (NOT his parents). [ Reply | More ]

Have your husband tell them now that if dog comes with them it will have to stay in their car. It's their choice whether they leave the dog at home or bring it and leave it in the car. These people are horrible. If they can't get with the program, don't have T-giving with them in the future. And at that point, if they bitch about being left out of holidays, dh can tell them that their inability to abide by your building's no-dog policy has created such stress for you guys in the past that you are going to do your own thing on holidays. These ILs had their opportunity to do that for their kids. If they bring stress to the holidays, leave them out. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you so much for saying all of this. I think tomorrow I'm going to crate the dog (I don't have a crate but baby gates I can use!) and tell them we don't feel comfortable having the dog out. I already VERY CLEARLY told them - the dog is NEVER to come again and this is a one time, last time exception. If MIL confronts me about it tomorrow I will be very clear with her that they willfully ignored our requests and we will not tolerate it again. [ Reply | More ]

You can do this! And remember that this is your home. You should be able to enjoy a holiday without needing to take breaks alone in your bedroom to hide from these people. Frankly, if they bring the dog, I wouldn't invite them next year. They haven't abided when you have told them not to bring the dog in the past, so they most likely aren't going to leave the dog home in the future. If you don't want them coming to the hospital when the baby is born, don't tell them about the arrival until you are all home from the hospital and ready for visitors. You should not be subjected to the stress of having to fend them off immediately post-partum. You guys have got to start taking charge of things because these ILs are just going to continue to walk all over you both. When they make statements that are critical of your choice of child's school, etc., just ignore...quickly pivot and start a new conversation topic. They want to annoy you and if you never engage and give their statements any traction, you are regaining control of the conversation and situation. Treat it like a game of strategy. I deal with difficult relative in this way and it's actually become kind of fun. [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry for you and I have been here. This is the ONLY thing DH and I fight about - or have had serious fights about in the past. I always took comfort in the fact that he would side with me, but the tension was still there and I know it bothered him. DH is a great person and he would tell me that I could come to him and vent in these situations but inevitably that’s when turned into a fight. I didn’t immediately play into his offers to “vent.” I would wait a few days and it would build up and the response was pretty much instanteously bad. His entire family wound up having a blowout one Xmas, where thankgoodness I was not incredibly involved and ever since then I think DH has reconsidered his priorities. He was also always better at ignoring those nagging comments about the decisions we make and how we spend our time (not with them), etc. All to say I hope it gets better for you. We are 10 years in and I still have anxiety but have found a little peace. [ Reply | More ]

No, not healthier. I tried to eat more veggies after my last regular checkup. i ended up with terrible joint pain and my plantar fasciitis came back. Turns out it is oxalates in the veggies. Why? I am one of the absolutely posters above. Fwiw, i don’t believe in getting married before college or living in your own for a few years if you aren’t going to college. I also think that it is not that common. [ Reply | More ]

i think UBers are so negative about HS romance and marrying young. it's more like, you don't know what love is until you are almost 40! [ Reply | More ]

Definitely. My dad (32 year-old priest) met my mom when she was 16. Together now for almost 50 years and they're the epitome of true love. [ Reply | More ]

He left the priesthood after she graduated from college. Met and fell in love when she was a minor, yeah. I was joking about it last night with her. [ Reply | More ]

These kinds of marriages tend to be much stronger I think than the ones where you meet someone at age 30 and insist on getting married 18 months later. [ Reply | More ]

Of course. Two generations ago people married young, often to people they knew for a very short period of time, and lived happily for decades. All relationships have ebbs and flows - - peaks and valleys. [ Reply | More ]

They also have no other options. Most people did not pursue higher education, stayed in their same Hometown, married the guy or girl from next door. And then yeah they made it work. It may not have been thrilling but it was stable. You have to decide if that's the thing that you want. , my high school boyfriend is and was an awesome person I mean no doubt he's a good catch, but we have really grown in different directions by the time we were 21 and it's fortunate that we didn't decide to get married just because we were familiar to each other. A lot of it is familiarity and security when you marry the only person you've ever dated. You're afraid to do anything else [ Reply | More ]

No more difficult to find a true love at that age than at any age. The personalities and temperaments of the two people have more to do than anything else with whether they _feel_ like they're married to their true love. Get yourself a couple of dopes and they'll be happy as clams for 75 years. [ Reply | More ]
