[ - ] Why does my friend who is a teacher think she can afford a nanny? I just keep listening to her ramble and complain. Her DH doesn’t make that much either. Nannies are for the elite. I️m a teacher turned sahm. Working wasn’t worth it with two kids for now. She’s upset because nannies make as much as she does. This is no secret. I am a teacher and I stayed home for 6 years because childcare would have taken 80% of my take home pay. Plus, I really enjoy being with my kids and I was willing to make any sacrifice to do that. Nannies generally don't make as much as I make, though. They might take 80% of my take home pay, but they don't get the retirement, the health insurance and the 16 weeks of vacation time I get. I have friends who chose to work when their kids were little and it moved them up the pay scale, paid for family insurance and contributed to their service credits for their pension. Many will retire at 55-58 and their pensions will be 70% of what they earned their last 4 years. Pretty damn good. Plenty of time to buy any silly thing you want later! [ Reply | More ]

No. Nannies are for whoever can afford one. She could agree to pay her entire take home for a nanny for five years to maintain the benefits and keep her career on track. That’s the choice she is facing. But you can’t or shouldn’t hire a nanny unless you can afford to pay a living wage. She basically complained the Nanny was asking for her take home pay equivalent. Well yeah, nannies are human and have bills to pay! I just said “that’s a really tough decision, but I am sure you and Tom will figure out what’s best for you.” [ Reply | More ]

My friendships started to feel like work when my kids were that age where their activities just took up the majority of our free time. Any leftover time I wanted to spend relaxing with DH/kids. I was smart and forced myself to make the effort for my two closest friends. Now I find that my time is amply filled by DH, older kids (who are wonderful to spend time with as teens/young adults), family (mother/sister), and those good friends. If I need more, I'll volunteer to meet new people; I have no interest in rejuvenating those old relationships. [ Reply | More ]

How does having a different letter in your name make you more of an individual? You can't be an individual if your name starts with the same letter as your sibling? My name and my sister's name both start with A. By your reasoning, why not give kids different last names as well? [ Reply | More ]

Probably not what you mean, but it still sticks out in my memory - I worked at a very TT place and after a particularly stressful deal closed, we all went out to do something relaxing together. We ended with (individual) spa treatments before a dinner, and after the most senior person showered, she got ready for dinner out in the open locker room naked from the waist up (dried her hair like that, did her make-up like that, etc.) for probably 30 minutes. It was very awkward. I've never known women to be quite so cavalier about nudity, even in locker rooms. [ Reply | More ]

I love her (MA mom here) but I just don't see her appealing to the flyovers and the south. She's SO intelligent, logical, etc. but she always sounds like she is going to burst into tears, like an old schoolmarm desperation to her voice...I think that unfortunately Drumpf has poisoned the well for her and the way she comes across will not click with middle America. She's way East Coast Ivy Elitist, and her record won't matter to them...her vehement anti-gun/pro-choice will matter to them, negatively. [ Reply | More ]
